MS2 Coursework Module

•50% of total marks (remaining 50% will be MS1 examination).

•Coursework is in 2 parts. Part 1 (Pre-Production) will be completed this terms, part two (Production) in the Spring term.

•You will complete the pre-production brief individually. The production brief will be completed in a group (max 4).

•The pre-production task is worth 20% of the total coursework mark. The production task is worth 40%. The remaining 40% will be awarded for a report on both tasks (to be written in the Spring term).

Brief

•Pre-Production: To produce marketing materials for a new Thriller film. This will be made up of the following:

•Front/Back/Spine of a DVD cover

•X2 promotional posters

Task•How can the Thriller genre be defined?

•Provide five examples of the genre. Are any of these genre hybrids?

•What are the conventions of the genre? Comment on characters/cast/type casting; narrative/plot; representations of gender (e.g is the man always the hero? What role do women often play?); settings/locations; other aspects of mise-en-scene.

•Provide examples of five posters for films that help illustrate your understanding of genre conventions.

•Use the internet to help you find the answers.
