MSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipProgramRationaleTheAmericanartsandculturalindustriesarekeydriversofournation’seconomy:AstudyconductedbytheArtsandCulturalProductionSatelliteAccount(ACPSA),1acollaborationoftheNationalEndowmentfortheArtsandtheU.S.DepartmentofCommerce’sBureauofEconomicAnalysis(BEA),revealedthattheartsandculturalsectorscontributed$729.6billionor4.2percenttotheU.S.economyin2014.Between1998and2014,thecontributionofartsandculturetothenation’sgrossdomesticproductgrewby35.1percent.2Whiletheeconomicimpactoftheartsandculturalindustriescanbemeasured,theirsocialimpactsareoftenunderestimated:Music,dance,visualart,andtheatreareascriticaltohowweperceive,interpret,andcritiquetheworldandpeoplearoundusasourlanguage.Theartsarticulateourbeliefs,politics,familialandcommunityties,andhistory.AsHilaryGlow,DirectoroftheArtsandEntertainmentManagementProgramatDeakinUniversitywrites,“theartsmanagerisnotsimplyconcernedwiththetechnicalfunctionofmanagement,butplayinganintellectualroleincriticallyreflectingontheconstructionofknowledgeintheculturaldomain.”3Intoday’sdigitallydriven,highlycompetitive,andincreasinglyglobaleconomy,traditionalinstitutionsforvisualandperformingartsfacecriticalsustainabilitychallenges.Leadersintheartsmustadoptthecreativethinkingandproblem-solvingskillsofanentrepreneur,inordertoenvisionnewmodelsforcreativepractice,audienceengagement,andfunding.Artsadministratorsarethebridgebetweencreativepractitionersandaudiences,andbetweenartsinstitutionsandsupportivestakeholders.Graduateprogramsinartsadministrationmustprepareartsleaderstobothconveythehumannecessityofcreativeexpressionandapplycreativethinkingtomanageresources,inspireaudienceengagement,andsustainfinancialsupport.Thearts,andaudienceopportunitiestoexperiencethem,aremoredynamicanddiversethaneverbefore,flourishinginmajorartsinstitutionsaswellasnon-hierarchicalorganizations,fromartist-runspacesandcommunityorganizationstoannualfestivalsandpop- 1TheACPSAisthefirstfederalefforttoprovidein-depthanalysisoftheartsandculturalsector'scontributionstotheU.S.economy.2NationalEndowmentfortheArts,April19,2017(https://www.arts.gov/news/2017/latest-economic-data-tracks-arts-and-cultural-jobs-state).3Glow,Hilary.“TakingaCriticalApproachtoArtsManagement.”AsiaPacificJournalofArtsandCulturalManagement7(2):585-594.

upexhibitions.Itistimeforatransformationinleadershiptrainingthatmatchestheingenuityoftoday’smostexcitingexperimentsinmusic,dance,theatre,andthevisualarts.Artsleadersmustalsobeequippedwiththeadministrative,analytical,andtechnologicalskillsetsnecessarytoexcelwithinthecomplex,interdependentartsecosystem.ProgramDescriptionTheCollegeofArts,MediaandDesignproposesaninterdisciplinaryMasterofScienceinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurship(AACE),inordertomeetthechangingneedsofartsleaders,fromadministratorsinartsinstitutionstocreativepractitionersandentrepreneurseagertomaketheirartstart-upareality.Theprogramfocusesonleadershipinnovationinarangeofperformance,visualarts,andculturalorganizations.Asanintellectualandpracticalcourseofstudythatmergestheexpertiseofacademics,creativeprofessionals,administrators,andentrepreneurs,theprogram’saimistosupportsustainablecreativepractice.TheMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipwillchallengestudentstocreatediverse,viable,andsustainableprojectsandorganizations;useentrepreneurialpracticestodevelopanddeploynewarts-focusedbusinessandanalyticalskills;anddesigninnovativestrategicplanningandengagementstrategies.Courseandprojectworkwillembedexperientialopportunitiestoexploreanddemonstratetransformationalartsmanagementapproaches.TheMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipcombinesexistinggraduatecertificateswithadditionalexperientialelectivesinartsleadership.ItisthefirstinaseriesofpotentialgraduateprogramsofferedbyCAMDthatwouldofferinterdisciplinarymaster’sdegreesdeliveredinonlineandhybridformats.Thismodelgivesstudentstheflexibilityofcompletingtheirdegree,whenandwheretheyarecapable,andthefreedomtoindividualizetheireducationandforgepersonalcareerpathways.ProgramFormatTheproposedMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipcombinesindividualgraduatecertificateprogramsofferedfullyonline,plustwoadditionalexperientialelectivesinartsleadership.StudentsintheBostonareahavetheoptiontocompleteexperientialstudycourseworkwithexistinginstitutionalpartners,aswellastoenrollinon-campuscoursesofferedthroughCAMD’sMusicIndustryLeadership,Art+Design,andTheaterprograms.Thesegraduateprogramshavesharedinterestsacross

ContributiontoCollegeandUniversityMissionTheMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipcomplementsNortheasternUniversity’smissionto“createandtranslateknowledgetomeetglobalandsocietalneeds”byforefrontingandcontributingcentrallytothevitalityoftheartsasauniversalhumanneed.ItsupportstheUniversity’scommitmenttotrainingstudentsinmulti-disciplinaryleadership,decision-making,andentrepreneurialthinkingthroughexperientiallearningandcreativepractice.Thecreativeeconomyisespeciallycriticaltourbaneconomicandsocialresilience.Therefore,theprogramsupportstheUniversity’sinterestinurbanengagement,withspecialemphasisonstrategicpartnershipsintheBostonarea.Asahybridprogramaccessibletoartsleadersworldwide,itconcurrentlysupportsNortheastern’sdedicationtoinnovativeglobalengagement.CAMD’sgoalistoestablishaleadrole—and,thereby,NortheasternUniversity’sdistinctiveness—intheshiftfromtraditionalcurriculumdesignforartsadministration,withitsemphasisonnonprofit,brick-and-mortarinstitutions,toentrepreneurialmodelsforcreativeresilience.TheMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipadditionallycreatesopportunitiesforCAMDstudentsandfacultytoworkcooperativelywithprivateandpublicsectororganizations,inordertobuildacademicpartnershipsaroundcreativepracticeandpublicprogramming.LinkstoOtherProgramsStudentsenrolledintheMSprograminArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipmaychoosefromarangeofon-campusMusicIndustrycoursesthatintersecttheirwork.StudentsintheMusicIndustryLeadershipprogramhavealsoenrolledinAACEcourses.Thesegraduateprogramshavesharedinterestsacrossthefieldsofperformingarts;innovation;andcommunity,culture,andcommercestudies

and,accordingly,havepotentialaffinitieswithresearchandgraduateeducationinDMSBandCSSH.ADMSBEntrepreneurshipcourseinbusinessplanning,previouslyapprovedfortheCulturalEntrepreneurshipcertificateisanadditionalelectiveoption.GraduatecreditsofferedbythisdegreedonotcounttowardMBAprogramsatNortheasternUniversity,however.TheAACEcurriculumwouldalsobeenrichedbyelectiveswithintheArt+DesignandTheaterDepartments,includingcoursesonexperiencedesignandperformancestudies.Finally,theprogrammaybecombinedwithfutureCAMDcertificatesinMusic,Theatre,andtheInterdisciplinaryArts,insupportoffutureinterdisciplinarygraduateprogramsinEntrepreneurshipfortheArtsandCriticalCreativePractice,botharecurrentlyunderdevelopment.TheproposedMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipbroadenstheMusicDepartment’sgraduateofferingsandacknowledgesthecoremanagerialandentrepreneurialcompetenciesrequiredofleadershippositionsintheperformingandvisualarts.AnMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipwouldallowacontinuationforundergraduatesinCAMDprogramsandpresentamorethoroughgraduateofferinginartsleadershipforcontinuing-educationprofessionals,inBostonandaroundtheglobe.ProgramClienteleAnalysisandEvidenceofDemand

Thecreativeindustriesarecomposedof“arts-centricbusinessesthatrangefromnonprofitmuseums,symphonies,andtheaterstofor-profitfilm,architecture,andadvertisingcompanies.”4Whattheseindustrieshaveincommonistheirapplicationofcreativity,culturalknowledge,andbusinesssavvytoproduceintellectualproperty—products,programs,andservices—withdeepculturalmeaningandsignificantsocialimpact.Theartsandculturalsectorsareaprofoundandessentialpartofanycommunity.Thecreativeindustriesarealsoeconomicdriversforbothurbanandruraleconomicrenewal.InEurope,culturalandartssectorsareasignificantdriverofgrowthandemployment,accountingfor3.3%oftheGDPandemploying6.7millionpeople.5TheUnitedNationsConferenceon

TradeandDevelopment’s“CreativeEconomyReport,”encompassingmorethan130countries,foundthatthecreativeindustriesareamong“themostdynamicemergingsectorsinworldtrade.”6AcrosstheUnitedStates,over673,000organizationsdedicatedtoartsandcultureemploynearly3.5millionpeople.AccordingtoAmericansfortheArts,“Artsbusinessesandthecreativepeopletheyemploystimulateinnovation,strengthenAmerica'scompetitivenessintheglobalmarketplace,andplayanimportantroleinbuildingandsustainingeconomicvibrancy.”7Nearly1.6millionAmericansworkwithinabroadrangeofdisciplinesinthevisualandperformingartsalone.8InFall2014,theNortheasternUniversityGlobalNetworkteamconductedadetailedsurveyofpotentialapplicants,industrypartnersandemployers.Artsandculturaladministrationwasidentifiedasanareawithstrongpotentialforgraduateprogramdevelopment,includingbothprofessionalmaster’sdegreesandgraduatecertificates.Themarketresearchconfirmeddemandforartsadministration-relatedprogramming,withafocuson“business,marketing,informationmanagementandtechnologycontentareas,”aswellaseducationandcommunityoutreach,culturalprogrammingandentrepreneurship,grantwritingandfundraising,andaudiencedevelopment.Thestudyshowedthat“employerswereenthusiasticaboutNortheastern’scommitmenttotheArtsandthisefforttodevelopgraduateprogramsthatwouldmeetthechangingdemandsofthemarketplace.”9Amajorconclusionofthestudyisthatthereisaneedfor“transformationalleadership”thatcanaddressthefinancialandartisticneedsofdiverseinstitutionswithinaglobalandincreasinglytechnology-basedsector.AllstudentscurrentlyenrolledintheArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipcertificateprogramshaveindicatedthattheywouldlikelycontinuetheireducationatNortheastern,iftheMSdegreeisapproved.ProspectivestudentshavealsoindicatedthattheyaremorelikelytoapplyforanMSdegree-grantingprogramthanforacertificateprogram,citingthemoreprestigiouscredentialsandaccesstofinancialaidasprimarymotivatingfactors.TheMStargetstwomajormarkets:Thefirstincludesprofessionalsandrecentundergraduatesfromdiverseperformingandvisualartsdisciplineswhoareseekingtoexpandtheirleadershipacumenanddevelopin-depthcommunicationandmanagerialskillstocreate,elevate,ortransformtheirownorganization.ThisincludesB2Bgroupsand“intra-preneurs,”orworking

professionalsseekingtoinnovatewithintheirownorganizationbycreatingnewproducts,services,administrativemodels,orconfigurationsinsideanexistingorganization,community,orindustrialsector.Thesecondmajormarketincludes“artist-producers,”ormusicians,visualartists,filmmakers,choreographers,actors,composers,playwriters,directors,designersandothercreativepractitioners.Thesehighlyskilledartistsmustbeadeptatproducingandmarketingtheirownwork,creatingtheirownsmallcompanies,collaboratingwithartistsfromothermedia,andattractingdiversestakeholdersintheircareerorstart-upenterprise.Thistargetpresentsauniqueandglobalopportunity:Therearecurrentlynoartsadministrationprogramsspecificallyaddressingthisdemographic.Locatedwithinaresearchuniversitywithastrongexperientiallearningenvironment,thisinterdisciplinaryprogramhasaninherentcompetitiveadvantageovertraditionalartsadministrationprograms.Aspectsthatsetitapartfromothergraduateprogramsinclude:

• Acurriculumthataddressescurrentchallengesfacingartsandculturalorganizations,artistsandculturaladministrators,deliveredthroughhybridonline/on-campuscourseworkorasafullyonlineprogram;

• Anapproachthatexpandsthenaturalcapacityforleadershipamongcreativepractitionersbyempoweringleaderstoexpresstheirideaseffectivelyandprioritizealignment,cooperation,andpartnership;

• Thedevelopmentofabroadrangeofmanagerialandentrepreneurialskillsapplicabletoavarietyofpositionswithinartsandculturalorganizations.

• Anapproachthatharnessestechnologyinthepursuitofartisticandculturalexpression:Thisprogramincorporatesdigitalmanagement,marketing,andprogrammingpractices,includingart-specificapproachestosocialmediamarketing,dataanalytics,mobileapplicationdevelopment,andcontext-richsystems;

• Anexperientialprogram,providingstudentswithdecision-makingexperiencesthatemulateandconnectwiththerealworld;

• Preparation“tobalanceaestheticunderstandingwithspecializedskillsingeneratingincome,managingboards,stimulatingpublicaccess,andsustainingthemissionandvisionoforganizationswhoseprimarypurposeisthedelivery,presentation,andpreservationofartsandculture,”10withinanincreasinglycompetitiveeconomicandculturalenvironment.

• ThesupportofBoston-areaarts-relatedinstitutions:AccordingtoastudyconductedinFall2014bytheNortheasternUniversityGlobalNetwork(NUGN)team,“Artsindustryemployersareeagertopartnerandcollaborateclosely”withNortheasternandtheCollegeofArts,MediaandDesignonthecreationanddeliveryofartsmanagementgraduateofferings.PartnershipswithinstitutionssuchastheMuseumofFineArtsandtheNewEnglandConservatoryconstituteamajorassettothisprogram.OurongoingcollaborationswithotherBostoninstitutionsofferadditionaldevelopmentresourcesandsupplementalofferingsofgreatvaluetothefacultyandstudentsinthisprogram.

CompetingDegreeProgramsTheAssociationforArtsAdministrationEducatorsreportsatotalof85institutionsworldwidethatcurrentlyofferartsadministrationcertificateormaster’sdegrees.11ColumbiaCollege-Chicago,CarnegieMellonUniversity,andtheCaliforniaCollegeoftheArtsaretheleadinginstitutionsbyconferrals.Northeastern’slocalcompetitorsincludeBostonUniversity,EmersonCollege,andWesternNewEnglandUniversity.Asof2012,onlytwoofthetoptenproviders,DrexelUniversityandSavannahCollegeofArtandDesign,offeredanonlinedeliveryformat.Conferralsatthesetwoschoolsgrewby128%from2010to2012,muchfasterthanthe20%growthacrosstheremainingeighttopproviders,whichhaveon-groundprograms.Thissignalsincreasingstudentdemandforflexibleformatsinthisfield.NortheasternhasastrongopportunitytodifferentiatefromtheseexistingprogramsbypromotingitsstrongbrandnameandcloseproximitytotheartsandculturalamenitiesthatBostonoffers.RegionalAlignmentThetoplocationsforjobpostingsrequestinggraduate-levelcredentialsinartsandcultureindustriesareNewYorkCityandLosAngeles.12Nearly460,000NewYorkersandnearly675,000Californiansworkintheartsandculturalindustries.13BostonranksNumber10nationwide,withatotalof287artsadministrationjobpostingsalone.Statewide,Massachusettsemploysnearly130,000arts-relatedworkers.TheCityofTorontooffersadditionalemploymentintheregion,withnearly130,000workersintheculturallaborforce.14Boston’svibrantcreative

industriesandproximitytomajorlabormarketsforcreativeindustries,includingNewYorkandToronto,presentanexcitingmarketopportunityforCAMD’sproposeddegree.EducationalObjectivesStudentswillgaintherelevantskillsneededtoassumeprofessionalleadershiprolesintheevolving,interdisciplinaryfieldofartsandculturaladministration.UponearningtheMSdegree,studentswillpossesstheknowledgeto:

1. Createandsuccessfullyleadnewand/orexistingartsandculturalorganizations;2. Assessthepotentialimpactandsocialdimensionofarts-sectormarkets,

competition,andopportunities;3. Acquiretheskillsneededtoleadteamsandmakeeffectivedecisionswhile

preservingartisticandcreativeindependence;4. Applystrategicvisionandglobalperspectivetoartsandculturalpractices;5. Fosterentrepreneurshipandinnovationwithinartsandculturalorganizations.

AdmissionCriteriaRequirementsforadmissioninclude:

1. Acompletedapplicationformwithapplicationfee2. 2lettersofrecommendation3. Officialtranscriptsfromallundergraduateandgraduateinstitutionspreviously

attended4. InternationalapplicantsmustprovideproofofEnglishproficiency(minimumTOEFL

scoreof100ontheinternet-basedexam(IBT),or250onthecomputer-basedexam).

ApplicantswithanundergraduateGPAof3.0orbetterwillbefavoredforadmissiontotheMSprogram.CurriculumandDegreeRequirementsTheMSinArtsAdministrationandCulturalEntrepreneurshipcomprises30semesterhours.Theprogramwillbeofferedinanonlineorhybriddeliverymethod.Corecoursesincludeembeddedexperientialelements.Coursecomponentsengagewithinterdisciplinaryaspectsofartsandculturalfields,andprojectsandresearchundertakenwillalsohaveaninterdisciplinaryfocus.Studentswillbeexpectedtoworkbothindividuallyandcollaboratively.
