Box and Whisker Plot
A box and whisker plot is a graph that displays the
highest and lowest quarters of data as whiskers, the
middle two quarters of the data and the median.
Box and Whisker Plot
Constructing a Box and Whisker Plot
Step 1: Find the lower and upper extremes , the
median, and the first and third quartiles
Lets try it…
This data
tells the distance it takes for cars to stop at a red
light.

Find the medianand the
first and third quartile
Find the First and Third Quartile
Constructing a Box and Whisker Plot
Step 2: Draw a number line. Above the number line plot points representing the lower and upper
extremes, the median and the first and third quartiles
Constructing a Box and Whisker Plot
Step 3: Draw a box through the first and third quartiles.
Inside the box, draw a vertical line through the median. Then draw lines from the first and third
quartiles to the extremes. These lines are called the
whiskers.
Make the box, mark the median,
draw the whiskers.
