BARK OF THE TREE BACKGROUND AND A FAVORITE OBJECT… Drawing/Mixed Media Project for Middle Grades
BOOK ILLUSTRATOR: WENDELL MINOR
http://www.minorart.com/bookcovers.html
IN THE PAST WE HAVE WORKED ON:
How to make a Thumbnail Sketch
How to paint on papers to store for future collages.
How to glue paper to paper Spots and Dots, but not a lot…
Line quality in pencil and pen and ink Using the tool to get an active and varied line
In the next project, we will be combining these skills to create a drawing over a combination of papers…
DAY 1. STEPS IN THE PROCESS:
OVERVIEW: Today we will choose an item to (gently) attach to a branch and work
out the composition using cut paper.
1. After you select an item, hang it from one of the large branches in the
perimeter of the classroom. (btw: if it is sunny and nice we’ll go outside and
draw the object hanging from a tree)
2. Create at least four thumbnail sketches to devise a composition and use
color pencil to indicate a three simple components.
a. the object hanging from the branch
b. the branch
c. the background…
REMINDER: THUMBNAIL SKETCHES:
The Thumbnail should just be a quick indicator of how to separate the
page into segments…. You can try just 5-10 segments…
Try some vertical, some horizontal, and some square…
Later, fill in with some simple color, you can use color pencil…
You can try with just 3 colors

PEER EVALUATE YOUR THUMBNAILS…
4. PEER Evaluation time slot !
When I call “TIME !”
we will pair and share and
you will help each other to
decide on the best composition
from the thumbnails
to work from
as we go onto the large
drawing paper….

BEGIN TO DRAW FROM OBSERVATION

begin to work on filling in the details and textures.
You may use soft pencils, and combinations of ink.
