NEW YORK CITY MARCH - APRIL .1982 ISSUE 132
Thirty seven years af'ter Liberation - from the notorious concentration camps
Malle and Ebensee by E.Riegelhaupt .
Thirty seven years ago come May 6th a small remnant of Jews were liberated by the American A:rmy· from the -concentration camp Ebensee in Austria.
Unfortunately not much has been writ-· ten about the tragic· experiences of those who have'perished in the two notorious concentration camps of Melk and Ebensee and the blessed memory of those martyrs is not being properly observed. ·
Only the small remnant of survivors who personally experienced the barbaric me_thods of the Nazis used to murder thousands of our brethren are able to comprehend the magnitutde of what transpired 'bhere.
To mention another incident in Ebensee many .who survived will remember an incident when many were buried alive while at work, when a mud slide covered them. Among them were Weinfeld, Fischgrund, Dr. Wohl, Grinbaum and others, all from Cracow.
Curing the last night before liberation the Germans buried ove~ 2,000 in a mass grave.
When we remember the millions of. innocent martyrs who were barbariously murdered by the Nazis, let us not forget our brethren who have endured so much pain and anguish before their last breath left their bodies in Melk and Ebensee.
The winter was the worst. Four o' cloc: o'clock every morning we were chased from the barracks to the Appel•Platz, where we were kept for hours in the rain and snow. Most of us just in pants and shirts and some without shoes. Those who survived the camp sill still remember the Gypsy Capo who .killed ten of inmates every ~ day just by clubbing them to death. And yet the worst was still to come. Thus on February 8,1945 when Russian armies were only 80 km. away, Melk was evacuated. For eight days and nights we were chased without food or drink. It was a "Death March~ as many dropped dead on the way. I remember towards the end of the march

there was on the .way a hole with dirty, muddy water and many stopped trying to get ·a drink, but in that instant the bullets started flying and many were soon dead. Looking at the dead _some of us felt envy. Their anguish was over. Some lost their close ~amily on the road who they did not want to part with. The Germans accomodated them with bullets. It was an 8 day nightmare that still haunts me today.
On the 16th day of April we arrived at Ebensee. .It is impossible to describe what we found there. Skeletons, half-naked
. were crawling around. Their eyes diip in their skulls looked at us with an unconscious look of people half crazy and ahlf dead. Aftier those years it is hard · to believe what I have seen there. Those who could still walk were carrying people to the crematorium who were still · alive •
But even duriilg those horrible moments one clung to a shred of hope that G-d would :somehow keep one alive if only for the purpose of being an eyewitness to the horrible crime to humanity committed_ by the German murderers.
In Ebensee we were brought into barracks where there were many dead bodies laying around. The reason for it was that the ovens could not keep up with the pace at which people were dying.
