Pass vs. Fail

Retention is likely if a student fails 3 classes in 6th grade. This is determined by averaging the grades for both semesters.

For example, if Little Johnny makes a 65 in math for Semester 1, he needs a 75 in math for Semester 2 to have a 70 (passing) average for the year.

MATH – How can you help your child be successful?• Make sure your child is completing nightly homework• PLEASE don’t say, “I was never good at math either.” That

often makes it seem like the kids have a “pass.” • Check the blog for fun games and videos if your child isn’t

proficient• Make sure your child is studying for Friday’s quiz/test• Use the MSG!! (The study guide for the unit is already

there!!)• Be knowledgeable of the topics your child is learning, and

point them out in everyday situations. Show them math in the “real world” to help them see the relevance.

• Ask your child to show you what he or she is learning
