Understanding C&D Processing

Page 2: MR Industry DevensCD

C&D Processors are regulated solid waste handling facilities

There are 16 permitted facilities in Massachusetts Each processor is required to operate their facilities

according to a documented and recorded waste ban plan These plans describe in detail the staffing levels,

sorting/recycling equipment and floor plan layout necessary to operate the facility

Each processors is required to submit accurate records on all incoming and outgoing material

General Overview

Page 3: MR Industry DevensCD

Incoming debris is weighed at the scale house Loads are then inspected for hazardous material

(suspected asbestos containing material) and waste ban items

Approved loads are then unloaded on the plant’s tipping floor

Large easily identifiable materials are separated on the tipping floor and stored in designated areas

The remaining material is pushed up to a feeder pile An excavator with a grapple sits on top of the pile and

feeds the recycling equipment line

The recycling line separates the material by size 6”- material is conveyed over a magnet to remove

ferrous material and then sent up a conveyor belt and fed into a destoner which uses forced air to remove the heavy material (ABC) while the lighter material is blown out the back of the conveyor belt

The 6”+ material is run over a star screen to remove fines/dirt and then conveyed up a manual sorting line where laborers segregate the material by type

The material is dropped below to storage bunkers
