SUBLIMITY — There's a lot ofhistory in the hills east of here, andnobody knows that better than BobHumphreys. Humphreys, who farms400 acres of grassland and pasture onlya few miles from this quiet community, will be celebrating more than 100years of family farming at a specialprogram Friday, August 31, at theOregon State Fair.

Humphreys' farm is among 36otherschosen by the Oregon Department ofAgriculture and the Oregon HistoricalSociety as a "Century Farm" — aunique distinction for rural familiesstill operating farms their ancestorssettled a century or more ago.

"To me," Humphreys says, "it'squite a thing of pride to know that yourrelatives have lived that long on oneplace. And it's a thing of interest toknow that a farmer can hold onto hisproperty for that long."

Humphreys' great-grandmother,Jane Krngrcame'from'MjssourXin 1852and settled near Sublimity. Eightyears later, she purchased the farmthat has remained in the Humphreys

7

family for more than a century. Andfor Bob Humphreys, that means a lot ofhistory.

"I was born in this very room,"Humphreys says, sitting in the livingroom of his spacious home. Gesturingdown the road and pointing to an oldfarmhouse, Humphreys adds, "Andthere's the original homestead."

Whether or not this farm remains inthe Humphreys family may not beentirely decided by the Sublimityfarmer's two sons — neither of theschool-aged youths have decided whatthey want to do later in life despite thefact that they both work the farm withtheir father. Humphreys, who is Chairman of the State Board of Agricultureand past president of the Oregon SeedGrower's League, says that grassfarmers in Oregon are facing increased costs and a 1975 burning cutoffthat threatens their existance.

"If it's (the cutoff) enforced,"Humphreys concluded, "it will meandisaster for all the growers."

But if the Century Farm award isany indication of this family^s deter;mined effort to ReSpltsfaT'Hl alive, SobHumphreys shouldn't worry too much. After all, the second hundred years isalways the easiest.
