INTRODUCTION

This project is about the working life of housing society guard so before we talk

about their life we must know what housing society is.

A housing society can be defined as a group of house owners residing in the same

building, apartments or the premises who form a society as per the laws and

regulations to have a smooth functioning of utilities and other facilities which are

provided to them. A group effort can solve any issue easily and if needed the issue

can be taken to higher levels. In a housing society basically all the issues related to the

building premises and amenities in it are solved.  Once the society is formed as per

the Indian laws the members jointly can make the standards to utilize the amenities

and other functioning in the premises like cleaning, parking, common area utilization,

garden maintenance, security etc. These entire standards are made to smoothen the

functioning of the society and optimum utilization of the facilities.

The housing society formed must be registered with the registrar of the cooperatives.

Each estate has its own rules and regulations regarding formation of housing society.

The registration of a housing society is a legal process which is required to be done in

a specified procedure. There are some agencies that help in formation of societies as

they know all the rules and regulations to form a society and can be time saving.

These agencies coordinate between the busy builder and the flat owners and thus

complete the process of registration.

Page 10: mpm

02

The housing society is also responsible for appointing various service providers who

take care of the maintenance of the society.  The housing society also is responsible

for settling resident issues and ensures better functioning of the overall community.

Keeping a check on safety measures and maintaining proper accounts of expenses

incurred for the well being of the society are some of the other important functions of

the housing society.

A security guard is an individual employed by a contract security company or a

proprietary security organization to protect persons and/or property from criminal

activities. If an individual maintains an armed guard registration it is not necessary to

also be registered as an "unarmed" guard.

Now we should know how housing societies be secured for that we should take active

and decisive role in the affairs of the Housing Society and specifically Safety and

Page 11: mpm

Security of our near and dear ones. For that Managing Committee as well as members

of Housing Society should pay attention because it involves our safety and security.

For that following steps may be taken:

Compound Wall:

Every Housing Society will have a demarcated compound wall. This needs to be

secured by installing strong grills which will avoid strangers jumping from the

compound wall. In this area, generally the Housing Society becomes cost conscious

and install low quality grills thereby making it ineffective. Install barbed wires on the

grills so that unauthorized access becomes difficult

03

Closed Circuit Cameras (CCTV): (Detective Security)

Page 12: mpm

Now a days, installation of CCTV has become common and even Government installs

CCTVs at sensitive locations so that the culprit can be caught soon and will be

evidence in the court of law. This area should not be ignored by Housing Societies

due to cost constrains. There are many options available in the market either to give

contract for the installation and maintenance without owning the cameras or to own

cameras and give Annual Maintenance Contract for its upkeep and maintenance.

Various types of cameras are available in the market and even it captures the pictures

and videos in the absence of light i.e. even in darkness it will go on recording the

events.

04

Installation of Intercom Facility:

The Managing Committee should propose the installation of intercom facility in the

Annual General Body Meeting and make it mandatory. This will be good for all the

members.

Appointment of Adequate Security Guards:

Generally Housing Societies appoint Security Agencies who supply Security

Manpower for the housing complex. As per the news articles published recently, 50%

Page 13: mpm

of security agencies employed by housing societies are not having license to operate

as security agencies. It has come to light of the authorities that proper background

checks were neither made by the Security Agency nor by the Housing Society and the

address proof given by the Security Guard were found fake. There are few

suggestions and conditions which need to be agreed between security guard and

societies.

1. Enter into an agreement with the Security Agency and go through all the clauses

and include terms and conditions which are favorable to the Housing Society.

2.   Define Dos & Don’ts for the Security Guards and ask him to follow.

a.   Ask them to make entries of visitor details. Provide them a register and monitor

them frequently.

b.   Ask them not do personal work of members. This may divert their attention from

the main work of keeping a vigil.

c.    To allow entry of only those vehicles having stickers of your Housing Society.

d.    Not to drink alcohol while on duty.

e.    To contact the Managing Committee, Police authorities, Fire department etc. in

case of emergency.

3.    The Security Agency may change the Security Guards frequently due to many

reasons. 4.     Obtain the Identification proof and address proof of not only the

Security Agency but also of the individual guards posted in your Housing Society.

05

5.     Ensure that the documents provided are genuine and not fake.

6.     Soft Skills:

a.     The Security Guards work for meager salary and are often frustrated due to

various reasons. Deal with them gently.

b.    Give adequate salary i.e. do not negotiate at a very low rate. It will only fuel negative thoughts.

Page 14: mpm

c.     Give them a weekly off so that they too can enjoy their personal life. This will relieve them from stress.d.    Do not unnecessarily scold them or speak disrespectfully in front of others. This will fuel negative thoughts.e.     If you want to reprimand them for any mistakes then talk to them firmly but do not abuse them or use foul language.7. Put a suggestion box

In this way we can take utmost care to have a safe and secure living.

Conceptual Theory

06

Conceptual Theory

From the very beginning of Human History the issue of security has always been a

top priority. As human kind began to grow and become more industrial and to become

more militaristic more and more societies began to employ the services of Security

Guard services.  This is something that was different from the standard armies at that

time, because soldiers came a dime a dozen at that time.  The issue of personal

Page 16: mpm

security was more of a closer issue as Kings and members of high society required a

safety net from enemies foreign and domestic. When these Kings and members of

high society bought property and formed industrial corporations, these corporations

and these entities needed to be guarded on a more consistent basis and then we can

see how the earliest forms of Security Guards were present in society even as far back

and the early Greek and Egyptian societies. Naturally Persian Roman and Asian

Societies followed suit and employed Security Guard services in their societies as

well.

As we move on towards more modern times and in particular in the American West,

we see the forming of the modern Security Guard as we know it today. After the

industrial revolution we see the biggest growth in the need for Security Guards as

property become more private and more individually owned. And this brings us to

where we are today; if you own a business it is imperative that you have some type of

Security Guard services on your premises. To have just a burglar alarm is not enough

in this time. The important matter is to show your community and the people who

come and patron your business that you mean business and that you care about the

safety of your customers. If you are having an issue surrounding pricing and payment,

just give us a call. You never know if we are able to negotiate a deal with you.

History has shown and will continue to show that security is important to the frame

work of society.

A security officer (or security guard) is a person who is paid to protect property,

assets, or people. Security guards are usually privately and formally employed civilian

personnel. Security officers are generally uniformed and act to protect property by

maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions,

observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video

cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and reporting any

incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate.

Page 17: mpm

07

Until the 1980s, the term watchman was more commonly applied to this function, a

usage dating back to at least the Middle Ages in Europe. This term was carried over to

North America where it was interchangeable with night-watchman until both terms

were replaced with the modern security-based titles. Security guards are sometimes

regarded as fulfilling a private policing function.

Many security firms and proprietary security departments practice the "detect,

deter, observe and report" methodology. Security officers are not required to make

arrests, but have the authority to make a citizen's arrest, or otherwise act as an agent

of law enforcement, for example, at the request of a police officer or sheriff.

A private security guards primary duty is the prevention and prevention of crime.

Security personnel enforce society rules and can act to protect lives and property, and

they often have a contractual obligation to provide these actions. In addition to basic

prevention, security guards s are often trained to perform specialized tasks such as

arrest and control (including handcuffing and restraints), operate emergency

equipment, perform first aid, CPR, take accurate notes, write detailed reports, and

perform other tasks as required by the client they are serving.

All security guards are also required to go through additional training mandated by

the state for the carrying of weapons and how to use them. Security personnel may

also perform access control at building entrances and vehicle gates; meaning, they

ensure that employees and visitors display proper passes or identification before

entering the facility. Security officers are often called upon to respond to minor

emergencies (lost persons, lockouts, dead vehicle batteries, etc.) and to assist in

serious emergencies by guiding emergency responders to the scene of the incident,

helping to redirect foot traffic to safe locations, and by documenting what happened

on an incident report.

Page 18: mpm

08

Patrolling is usually a large part of security guards duties. Often these patrols are

logged by use of a guard tour patrol system, which require regular patrols. Although

security guards differ greatly from police officers, military personnel, federal agents

and officers.

The primary responsibility of a security guard is to ensure safety of people and

property from any sort of damages, thefts or violence. However, there are several

other demands of the job as well.

Security guards are professionals who safeguard and protect people or assets

against any kind of attacks and damages. The job description may vary depending on

the size of the premise that needs to be guarded, the number of security personnel

employed, and the protection systems that are assigned to the guards. Depending on

the kind of the premise that a security guard guards, the nature of his work can be

broadly categorized into two types viz., patrol-oriented and static-oriented. A patrol-

oriented guard is continuously on the move, patrolling his premises constantly, and

ensuring that everything is under control. On the other hand, a static-oriented guard

keeps a watch on the premises from a fixed location, such as a gatehouse or a lobby of

a building. However, many times, a guard's duty might involve both, patrolling as

well as static functions.

Duties and Responsibilities of security guards are:

To ensure that the building/premise assigned to him is safe and secured from any sort

of contingencies and acts of violence.

☞ To keenly observe each and every person entering the premise and to keep an eye

on intruders.

☞ To check the luggage/belongings of any new person entering the premise, in order

to ensure safety of the premise as well of the people.

Page 19: mpm

09

☞ To prevent the entry of unauthorized people and prohibited articles into restricted

areas.

☞ To maintain a log book with details of the names, purpose of visit, and entry and

exit times of each and every individual who enters the building.

☞ To conduct routine checks inside the building each day.

☞ To monitor the premise through closed-circuit TV cameras, and check for any sort

of criminal activity.

☞ To report all the suspicious acts happening in the premises to the local police.

☞ To help the local police in case of emergencies such as thefts or violence.

☞ In case of a commercial premise, to check each and every office and make sure

that all the possible entrances and exits are closed, and all the lights/electric

equipment are switched off.

☞ To answer the emergency alarms with immediate effect, and to inform the

respective department (such as fire department in case of fire) right away.

☞ To answer telephone calls of the people occupying the premise and to solve their

queries, even during the non-business hours.

☞ To make detailed notes of damages to the premise or assets or of unusual

occurrences.

☞ To enforce and adhere to all the rules and regulations, and to warn the violators

regarding

10

Page 20: mpm

Possible consequences.

☞ To constantly inspect and monitor all the security devices and equipment and to

ensure that they are not tampered with.

☞ To inspect and adjust controls such as furnaces, boilers, and air conditioning, so

that the entire building is properly regulated.

☞ To direct vehicles in and around the building and to make sure that all the vehicles

are safe, while inside the premises.

☞ To guard and sometimes, drive armored vehicles in order to safely transport

valuables and money from one place to the other.

Skills Needed:

☞ Good communication skills

☞ Politeness and courteousness

☞ Ability to handle and resolve conflicts

☞ Attention to detail

☞ Knowledge and ability to secure a premise

☞ Honesty, dedication, and sincerity

☞ Ability to act fast in emergencies

☞ Adequate knowledge of first-aid

☞ Ability to use firearms and other security equipment

☞ Ability to judge and detect possible threats and act accordingly

11Required Qualifications:

Page 21: mpm

The minimum requirement for becoming a security guard is a high school diploma or

a GED (General Educational Development tests) certification.

In some cases, on-the-job training is also provided, but this depends solely on the

employer.

All the security guards, irrespective of where they are employed, have to be at least 18

years old and the citizens of the India.

Societies needing heavy security expect their guards to be trained in the use of

firearms.

The security guards are employed in varied work environments such as offices,

residential buildings, retail stores, banks, rail, air, and sea terminals, museums, parks,

theaters, hospitals, industrial premises, federal government agencies, educational

institutions, and so on. The average annual salary of security guards is about Rs

36000/-, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The salaries and the

requirements for becoming a security guard vary from state to state. Further, the

salary depends also, on the kind of establishment, where one has been employed as a

security guard.

With experience, a security guard may achieve a higher position, like security

supervisor or security officer. At times, the job profile of a security guard may involve

some risks, especially if altercations arise. Hence, while taking a decision, one should

always consider the duties and responsibilities that a security job might demand.

12

Page 22: mpm

Till now we have talked about that what is the history of security guards, their

responsibilities, what are the skills they should have and their qualifications and

required trainings. Now I am going to tell about exactly what they are doing during

their duties which I observed while visiting few societies during my research.

In most of the societies security guards are deployed through different security

agencies on contract basis. Normally these guards perform their duties in two shifts.

Which are 7.00 AM to 7.00 PM and 7.00 PM to 7.00 AM

13

Page 23: mpm

Hardly few societies have security guards with weapon all most rest all the housing

societies guards do not have weapons.

All the security guards are wearing uniforms this is the one thing which I found

common in all societies. Another thing which I found common i.e. hut for security

guards but the facilities provided in those huts are different like some of them do not

have proper looking view towards the gate , and in few huts there is no fan or lights,

few of them do not have proper chairs for the use of guards.

In few big societies security guards have proper big huts where they can sit down at

ease, seating arrangements for visitors are also provided. There are facilities of issues

passes to visitors after proper verification is also available. In this case what I feel its

depend on how much societies are rich because its depends on availability of funds.

One another important observation was that only few societies has provided

telephone facilities but societies which not provided those guards face problems

specially in night hours. Because it become very difficult for them for calling

assistance in case of any emergency and it become more worse if they don`t have

whistle also.

Societies which are located near main road those guards found effected by

pollutions and hearing loss due to heavy traffics on road and loud noise some time its

lead to them removal

from job because of medical fitness as well as carelessness which probably occurred

due to noise pollution.

There are no transports facilities for guards from their home to working place

which some time lead to be late at work place and lead to removal from job.

14

Page 24: mpm

These security guards are normally paid by their security agencies because of that

chances of increase in their payment neglected because they are directly not in touch

with their owner some time even they don’t to whom they should approach.

During my research I found these security guards are paid only salaries no bonous

on depawali , no gifts, no convence allowance even no DA they are actually reliable

on their salary or occassionaly on festivals eve they received bakshis from the societes

living members. Which lead to them do some other activities during their duties for

running their life smoothly like grass cutting, washing of vehicles, switch on / off for

water motor as on when required by members of societies. Some time they are being

used for taking care of small childrens as desired by their paresnts while going and

coming back of schools. For these activities they received some extra money other

then payment which look irresponsibilites from out side but in my view it is a fact that

they are bound to do so because they also human being they also need joy and

enjoyment in their painful life.

15

Page 25: mpm

In few societies during the duties they are provided with one tea and snacks two

times one in morning and another in evening with lunch at noon time but few

societies does`t provide. It is a big helping hand For those to whom these food and

drinks provided but it’s a big setback for those it not provided. During my research I

observed their dull faces which clearly suggest that they are not happy with their life.

It is true because the amount of risks they take on their shoulder but not paid equally

to those risks.

In rainy season they face more trouble during their duties because of unavailability

of proper shades or guard room in most of the societies even they are not provided

with umbrealla`s also either they use their own umbrealla or otherwise need to

perform their duties without these facilities. Some time because of rain they got

dangerous diseases which become another additional problem for them.

They are not provided with medical facilities also so these guards are need to pay

self for their medical requirements. Because of this some time these guards does not

take responsibility in case of emergency. One another drawback is that they used to

stand alone allmost eight hours a day because of this they got some serious diseases

like permanent knee pain, back pain and treatment for these diseases are too costly for

them some time they got paralisis attack because of o timely treatment. Few societies

give them first aid box which are helpful for small injuries uring their duties

.

16

Page 26: mpm

I notice one important point that it is bad to be a security guard because each and

every one learns how to jump using a guard. They are working with a very low

remuneration. Nightshift and dayshift they are always there waiting for somebody and

they don’t even know when he is coming or what kind of a gun is he going to come

with. They are poor people and most of them are risking their lives every day to guard

the property and lives of rich people.

One thing I noticed during societies visit that security guards who has plenty of

experience for example 15 to 20 years they started thinking that they can`t do any

other job they feel only security job is better for them because of this they become

overconfident this thing give a chance to increases in theft, robbery or criminal

activities because a long term planning can be made by observing those guards for a

longer period like for 06 to 08 months.

Security guards those who enjoy being a security guard say it is worth the risk, and

thwarting crime is the best part of the job. There can be a huge satisfaction in

successfully protecting people and property from criminals, and it’s possible to gain a

huge self-esteem boost and

17

Page 27: mpm

Increased confidence from these incidents. Being a security guard is one job where

you can really grow as a person.

One another point I came to know that the school fee of their children are waved off

by government and subsidy are provided on ration, sugar and Kerosene Oil which is

great help to them these are the few good thing in their life.

Aim & Objectives of study

18

Page 29: mpm

Aim & Objectives of study

AIM

To study the work life balance of Security guard

Aim is to bring out the ups and downs of working life of security guards because their

importance has been declined by our big societies, they are treated as very poor and

less knowledgeable and I want also highlighted that thing which can change their life

as per their desire.

The following are the specific objectives of the study:

1. To determine the job performance level of housing societies security guards in

big societies.

2. To examine the influence of living members of societies and surrounding

areas on security guards performances.

3. To investigate the security guard mean differences in job performance based

on level of education and experiences.

4. To give them reasonable salary package equal the risk they have in their life.

5. To pay attention to one of the most important factor that is medical facilities.

19

Page 30: mpm

IMPORTANCE AND SIGINIFICANCE

Becoming a security guard can be a very attractive proposition for many people. It’s

a special kind of career that carries a certain amount of responsibility, with respect

from fellow employees and the wider community. A security guard is responsible for

the security of a workplace or other premises. Their mere presence acts as a valuable

restriction to thieves and other wrongdoers, but they are also responsible for actively

protecting people and property from flammable, damage, and other crimes.

Before you think about becoming a security guard you must determine if this is the

right career for you. This type of job doesn’t suit everyone, and differs quite a bit

from the normal path that most people take.

A security guard must be very observant, with a keen eye and a good attention

span. Spirit is key. Many hours will pass without any incident, but you must be

responsive and ready if trouble suddenly strikes. A security guard must also be

prepared to follow a specific routine, with exact and strict patrol times to observe.

While working as a security guard might seem exciting, and a great way to earn the

respect of your family and friends, it can also be painfully boring. You should prepare

for long periods of inactivity. Often you are paid just to be there.  While this might

seem like a very easy way to earn a living, the novelty of being paid to sit and do

nothing quickly wears off. The boredom can become a real curse.

Page 31: mpm

20

On the other side of the coin, working as a security guard can often be exciting and

you will occasionally be actively preventing criminal behavior and protecting

property. While this type of action packed event might appeal to your sense of

adventure, you should also be aware that working as a security guard can be a

dangerous occupation. People engaged in criminal activity can be extremely

unpredictable. Some of them are drug addicts, gang members, or worse. Often a

security guard won’t discourage these people, and you could even get hurt if they

become violent. If you choose to become a security guard then you must be aware of

the very real risks inherent in the job.

Working as a security guard isn’t a 9-5 job, and in most positions you will be

required to work irregular hours. Working overnight is very commonplace, and you

must be prepared to work these unsociable shifts. However, the fact that security is

required on a 24 hour basis can work in your favor, and you may be able to fit work

around college classes or another job.

There is also another common perk for security guards. Many apartment complexes

will offer a reduced rent to qualified security guards who are prepared to patrol the

complex and look after the safety of the residents. If you work as an apartment

complex security guard it can be a very cheap way to live, and you won’t have to

travel far for work!

Some people have the prejudiced view that working as a security guard is a dead

end job, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are lots of opportunities for

advancement in the security business. Most security agencies provide continuing

education as part of their hiring package, and it’s not uncommon for security guards

to move up to become police officers, or another

Page 32: mpm

21

On the whole, working in security is a very varied job. It can often be dull, but

when the action starts it is one of the most exciting and rewarding occupations in

the world.

SCOPE AND UTILITY OF STUDY

This study examined that there are scope for improvement of working life of

housing society’s security guards by giving them proper training to handle the

emergency situations in worst conditions and giving them some extra allowances with

salary to make them sound and strong with full of confidence so that they can protect

people, properties and environment in a better manner.

Some time better medical facilities and stress management program could be

arranged for them which will be helpful to change their way of living and

working also.

Page 33: mpm

Research Methodology

Page 34: mpm

22

Research Methodology

Hypothesis Developed

A hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more

variables. A hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction about what we expect to

happen in our study. For example, this study designed to look at the relationship

between housing societies and security guards. "This study is designed to assess

which societies security guards perform better and why.

While doing research following questions came in my mind:

Is security guards paid reasonable salary?

Can they provide safety to people and their property?

H1- to balance between the work and family is critical for security guard

Area of the study

The area of study was different housing societies with security guards mainly

following things being considered about housing societies security guards they are:

1. What needs to be protected

2. What level of protection is desired

3. Who is going to do the protecting

4. What are the Facilities provided to guards

5. What are the differences between wages

6. Which type of medical facilities can be useful

Type of Data Collection

Primary data: It called basic data also collected on the basis of what problems

actually guards are facing through survey from different societies and guards. Reason

for this because there is

Page 35: mpm

23

more scope for reliability of the information and these data are logical in nature and

only source for knowing opinion.

Secondary data: These data are not originally collected but rather obtained from

different security agencies on the basis of rule and regulations made for security

guards. These data must be suitable for that subject. The secondary data available

should be adequate in terms of accuracy.

Methods of data collection

Data those collected during the research vide adopting following methods:

Survey

Personnel interviews

Telephonic survey

Internet

Security Agencies

Page 36: mpm

24

Population/ size of the sample

For population and size of sample I have chosen three big societies one is Lunkad

Plaza and Co nark Campus and third one is gulmohar galaxy all are located at viman

nagar pune, Maharashtra. Technique of sample is scientific and economy and before

selecting the sample area and data is being identified.

Finite type of population is being selected for my studies and that is six individual

security guards from above mentioned societies.

Limitation of study

Limitation of study:

The limitations of the study are those characteristics of design or methodology that

impacted or influenced the application or interpretation of the results of our study.

They are the constraints on generalizability and utility of findings that are the result of

the ways in which we chose to design the study and/or the method used to establish

internal and external validity.

The following limitation I observed during my research

1. While survey some societies has not permitted to take information they might

have some question in their mind regarding their safety this lead to get less

information or missing important values.

2. One another major problem I face that few guards were not much cooperative

they were trying to hiding things may be they were afraid from their security

agencies which employed them.

3. Because of surrounding conditions some of societies I could not visit because

of that I be unable to find some important information.

Page 37: mpm

Data Analysis & Interpretation

Page 38: mpm

25

Data Analysis & Interpretation

As Researchers I often find data analysis the most enjoyable part of carrying out a

logical

Study, since after all of the hard work and waiting I got the chance to find out the

answers. If the data do not provide answers, that presents yet another opportunity for

creativity! So analyzing the data and interpreting the results are the “reward” for the

work of collecting the data. Data do not, however, “speak for themselves”. They

reveal what the analyst can detect. So when the new investigator, attempting to collect

this reward, finds him/her alone with the dataset and no idea how to proceed, the

feeling may be one more of anxiety than of eager anticipation.

As with most other aspects of a study, analysis and interpretation of the study should

relate to the study Objectives and research questions. One often-helpful strategy is to

begin by imagining or even Outlining the manuscript(s) to be written from the data.

The usual analysis approach is to begin with descriptive analyses, to explore and gain

a “feel” for the data. The analyst then turns to address specific questions from the

study aims or hypotheses, from findings and questions from studies reported in the

literature, and from patterns suggested by the descriptive analyses. Before analysis

begins in earnest, though, a considerable amount of preparatory work must usually be

carried out.

1. I will start with my first question during research that what salary security

guards are getting. I found a little difference between societies to societies as

mentioned in below table no. 1

Page 39: mpm

26

Table No. 01

Monthly Salary of security guards during last five year in three different

societies

Year/Societies Lunkad Plaza Konark Campus Gulmohar Galaxy

2009 2000/- 2100/- 2250/-

2010 3000/- 3200/- 3000/-

2011 3500/- 3800/- 3600/-

2012 4200/- 4500/- 4400/-

2013 5000/- 5200/- 5100/-

As mentioned above there is a very little increase in last three years where as from

2009 to 2010 it was almost 50% that clearly suggest the importance of security guard

decreasing year by year even they are not paid with bonus as well as no incentive also

so that make more difficult for them to survive in such a costly city like pune.

Now look at table no. 2 which shows that what they do for extra earning during their

duties

Table No.02

Various Extra activities with their wages rates during the working

Page 40: mpm

27

As shown in the table that it is below 500/- Rs monthly if we include this in addition of

their salary it will not cross more then 6000/- Rs monthly and I think this not sufficient

in city like pune. So here I can say that they are not paid with reasonable salary

2. Second point which I observed during interviews how they protect the people

and their properties.

In these first things comes that how they do patrolling.

Patrolling

What is the purpose of a patrol?

Security guards are hired to protect people, property and information.

A uniformed guard will help to deter crime just by being in an area. When we do a

patrol

We widen the area that we are protecting.

Remember...your main duties are to observe, deter and report

Observation is as a process that includes:

1. Noticing – becoming aware of something through any of your five senses

2. Interpreting – organizing the information into something meaningful

3. Recalling – remembering the information and being able to access it when you

need to

Table no. 3 is mentioning that how people being observed during patrolling

As mentioned in the table no. 03 that how security guards observe the people while

doing patrolling but during my visit I found even few of them not knowing what to

observe and how to observe the people because of this if some day any incident

happen they might lose their job.

Page 42: mpm

293. Third point is that another important aspect of security which guards must know

that is

Fire

A fire is one of the most serious situations a security guard has to deal with. Their

duty is

To protect people and property, and a fire can destroy both in minutes. The best

defense

Against fire is prevention. They must be aware of potential hazards and how to deal

with

Them. They will often be the first person on the scene in the early stages of a fire. If a

fire

Happens during your shift, they must know what to do. They need to be able to act

quickly

And with confidence. They must know what fire related equipment is at our site and

make sure they get training so they know how to operate it for the safety of all.

But at the same time they must know what they need to protect first which I found

missing in my research. For that they must be given with necessary training that how

to use a fire extinguisher in emergency situations.

Page 43: mpm

304. Fourth point the facilities being provided to security guards among these

societies which definitely influence the performance of security guards.

Table No. 04

Various facilities provided to security guards among societies

Gulmohar Lunkad Plaza Konark

CampusFacilities

Shade to stand Yes Yes YesTelephone No Yes YesTorch & Whistle No Yes YesEntry Register Yes Yes YesRest Room No Yes YesChair with Table Yes Yes YesProper Uniform No Yes YesTea/Breakfast No No YesLunch/Dinner No No Yes

We have seen in table 04 types of variation in facilities provided in all three societies

which lead to less performance in their duties as it is understood for example in

Gulmohar there are no telephone, no torch and whistle, no rest room, no chair, no

uniform and on tea, breakfast, lunch or dinner provided where as in Konark Campus

all the facilities provided and if we compare with Lunkad plaza there also almost every

facilities provided expect lunch or dinner.

31

Page 44: mpm

But if we compare these facilities with their salary not much difference in gulmohar

salary is Rs 5100/-, in konark campus Rs 5200/- and in lunkad plaza it is Rs 5000/- as

mentioned in table no.01 and if we include both salaries and facilities in one package

this will make big difference among the societies.

Yes effect of above mentioned facilities is bounding them to perform their duties in a

lazy way which is totally injustice to the society’s member who are expecting more

safety from these security guards.

So we can say if good care taken by societies towards security guards can produce

better safety to these societies.

5. Fifth point is how shift duties influence their working life mostly all the

security guards performed their duties in two shifts that is morning 7.00 am to 7.00

pm ( Day Shift) and evening 7.00 pm to 7.00 am (Night Shift). In this regard I

observed two main thing the guard who performed night duty mostly with drinking

involved and he had almost all the disadvantage only like no vehicle washing money,

no water motor on/ off etc. whereas day shift guards have more advantages then night

shifts but in payment no difference.

So it seems to be unfair with night guards even they need to perform their duties more

carefully because most of the incidents happen in late nights only.

Page 45: mpm

326. Sixth point is that how they release their stress on duty or as well as off duty

In recent years, much has been learned about stress and stress disorders impacting

individuals who work in high-risk occupational industries — police, fire, rescue and

disaster, military and emergency medical. While security professionals have been

unjustifiably marginalized from high-risk occupations, the divide is narrowing as the

role of private security industry grows and evolves.

Security professionals will encounter a variety of threats that can cause traumatic

stress: terrorism, espionage, piracy on the high seas, bombs, sabotage, workplace

violence and active shooters, to name just a few. These threats present a challenging

and dangerous environment.

Thus, the role of the security professional has become increasingly more complex,

and the chance of being placed in harm’s way has significantly increased. With these

increased risks, the potential to be exposed to a continuous level of stress has a high

probability. Security professionals who are placed in crisis situations will experience

post-traumatic stress, which is a normal reaction; however, the problem arises when

the stress-induced symptoms persist, intensify and eventually become debilitating —

defined as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Types of Stress

The two categories of stress that predominantly effect security professionals are

cumulative stress and post-traumatic stress (PTS). Cumulative stress can be described

as the erosion of one’s mental and physical health over time. In the past, these effects

could have been described as "burn out" with the three phases: stress arousal, energy

conservation and exhaustion. When routine stress turns into cumulative stress, it is

due in part to people not addressing in a healthy way the accumulation of these

stressors.

Eventually, coping resources run out, and it overwhelms the individual both mentally

and physically — characterized as PTS. This ultimately becomes life encompassing;

and while it

Page 46: mpm

33

Should be noted that stress does not affect all people in high-risk occupations, for

those affected, it is a painful experience. The symptoms of PTS include:

• Deterioration in performance;

• Deterioration in mental/physical health;

• Deterioration of relationships; and

• Deterioration of the person.

The Technique for stress release which security guards should use as follows:

(a) Guard should provide a stress-free work environment, recognize where stress

is becoming a problem for him, and take action to reduce stress.

(b) Humor is one of the greatest and quickest devices for reducing stress. It works

because laughter produces helpful chemicals in the brain. Therefore most people will

feel quite different and notice a change in mindset after laughing and being distracted

by something humorous.

(c) He should go for a short quick really brisk walk outside in off duty Hours.

(d) He should breathe in some fresh air and smell the atmosphere Trees, rain,

flowers, traffic fumes - doesn't matter - stimulate your senses with new things.

(e) Or do a few star-jumps - something energetic to get his body moving and

relaxing.

(f) Drinking Alcohol is the most common thing they use to come out of their

stress

Page 47: mpm

34

7. Seventh and final point how security guards balance their work life and family

life during the research I found in following manner they can do

1. Flexible working hours - providing more flexible and consultative roistering

arrangements and working hours to all security guards

2. Part time work - providing more part time jobs with less hours or fewer shifts, or

job sharing arrangements

3. Reasonable working hours - reducing excessively long working hours and double

shifts.

4. Access to childcare - improving access to childcare at working place.

5. Flexible leave arrangements - providing greater flexibility in leave arrangements to

suit employees’ personal circumstances, including leave for school holidays through

purchased leave arrangements and extended leave without pay to provide full time

care to family members.

6. Leave in single days - allowing employees to request and take leave in single days

and accrued hours as time off in lieu of payment.

Job mobility - providing increased mobility for employees to transfer between work

areas and health services to find more suitable working arrangements that will assist

them to better balance their Current work and family/personal responsibilities.

8. Safety and wellbeing - improving safety, wellbeing and respect for all employees in

the workplace.

9. Telephone access - ensuring all guards are able to receive urgent telephone calls or

messages from Family members at work and have access to a telephone to remain

contactable with their family during working hours.

Findings And Conclusion

Page 49: mpm

35

Findings And Conclusion

Findings:

In the lives that we live today, it is rather difficult to live without security guards due

to various reasons, from theft to kidnap among many others. A security guard is a

person that is hired and paid to detect, then deter, then observe and thereafter report

any forms of activities that may be a danger to the people who hired him or her.

Security guards do not have the power to arrest any person, but their main purpose is

to keep an eye whether on camera or literally, on the areas they are designated to

patrol. In most cases they are uniformed and have licenses or badges to show their

legibility to work as guards.

Page 50: mpm

36

CONCLUSION

Conclusion of this project includes as follows

1. Working life of security guard is not good

2. Lot of risks is there

3. Less Salary compare to toughness of job

4. Un hygienic working conditions

5. Work Pressure is too much

6. Even no happiness in family also

7. Neglected by big human societies

Page 51: mpm

Suggestions and

Recommendations

Page 52: mpm

37

Suggestions and Recommendations

Suggestions and recommendations of this project as follows:

(a) First of all we need to understand the importance of security guards in our life.

(b) Second step which need to be taken that is provision of good training and

security hazards skills for guards so that they become more confident to take care of

people and their properties.

(c) We need to provide them better facilities like good uniforms, food and shelter

to keeping their morale high so that they able to provide us better security services.

(d) They need good salaries packages from governments and also need to award

by Bonuses and other kind of incentives and gifts.

(e) They should be given proper weapon training for safety

(f) Timely updating of criminal activities should be given them it may help them

while observation and patrolling.

(g) The new wages rates should be decided for improvement of their personnel

life.

Page 53: mpm

38

(h) Few additional allowances should be provided like Transport, Family

Assistance, DA, Children Educations Allowances etc

(i) In some societies those have good fund must provided shelter and foods to

these guards some kind of stress management exercises should be initiated to make

them mentally strong.

(j) The power of taking action against defaulter should be given to these security

guards whom I found missing because of that they are not confident about their job.

(k) The security agencies which are employing them can make big difference by

giving some kind of authority like Government license, weapon training etc.
