Big picture
1. Introduce Drumbeat. Build projects and community.
2. Strengthen position as leading public charity promoting open internet.
2
Reminder > we set two main goals for 2010:
These are first steps towards a something bigger: huge numbers of new people participating in Mozilla.
Picture is getting more concrete, which feels good.
May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Where we are right now
1. At least three solid Drumbeat bootstrap projects.
2. Local community event model starting to work.
3. Fundraising rolling, albeit a bit slower than hoped.
4. Mozilla Core mostly on back burner.
3
Four months into 2010 we have:
We’re learning and refining our plans.
May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
What success looks like
1. Go deep on 3 - 5 projects that demo Drumbeat.
• While also building up platform for large # of projects.
2. Invest in events plus projects combo in 5+ cities.
• Support events in many cities, invest where we get most traction.
3. Build solid fundraising capacity, hit our $ targets.
4
Proposed priorities for rest of 2010:
Are these the right places to put most of our resrouces? Do these get us far enough toward our long term goals?

• Number of projects to target: 3. Stretch: 8At least: P2PU, Web Made Movies, Universal Subtitles.
• Henrik, Shuttleworth Fellowship and Open Video Allianceshould generate a few more solid projects.
• In short term, put less energy into overall ‘project platform.’ Push later in 2010 to get 2011 projects.

Here are quotes from people on drumbeat.org who have filled in the Universal Subtitles volunteer form. We’ve received over 100 submissions like these.
“I’m interested in helping with your drumbeat project. As the mother of a hard of hearing daughter I think this is an amazing undertaking. I have a little bit of programming skills, and a
whole lot of internet skills. Let me know what I can do to help!!”
“Hi, I don't have any talent in computer. I'm just a common people who can speak Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Malay, and little Japanese. And maybe very little Spanish. Is there anything I can do to help?”
One of Drumbeat’s roles is to help projects effectively communicate and coordinate with potential contributors like these.

Current Focus: Find community leaders via first local events. Develop integrated approach in 5 cities.
• Target at least 20 cities for events, stretch for 50. Continue to focus on Europe, Brasil, North America.
• Integrate event + project approach in 5 cities, stretch for 10.
• Kitchen table sprints, meet-ups and other activities where people actively work on or create Drumbeat projects.
• Drumbeat Festival could be used as community leadership summit to strengthen leaders we are building locally.
May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Events
Community model
1. Day long event to introduce topic and find local leaders
2. Project focused events like a sprint or ‘work’ party
3. Smaller meet-ups to sustain energy; bring in new people
4. Rinse and repeat

Events in 5 cities so far. ~8 more planned. Invest more deeply where
event + project combo likely to work.
May 2010 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
• Two possible visions for Drumbeat Festival:
• Thought leadership event that creates a big stage for people working on the open internet.
- or -
• Community leadership summit that rewards and energizes Drumbeat leaders.
Drumbeat Festival

While we can do a bit of both, we need to decide on our primary focus.

Fundraising
13
Open Web Fund ‘t-shirt’ Campaign
1. This becomes the focus until individual donations are on solid footing. May - December ’10
2. Call to action: support Mozilla; contribute to the Drumbeat Open Web Fund.
Bigger focus on foundation grants
• Get key influencers to stand beside Mozilla as public benefit organization: MacArthur, Knight, etc.
• Stretch current target.
Example of community designed
t-shirt. Voting currently underway.

Web site notes
• Major new drumbeat.org release.
• Dramatic improvements to pages for Drumbeat projects. Also, improvements to better explain to new people to the site.
• More improvements still needed after this release.
• Especially events and volunteer management / communication.
• Progress much slower than hoped.
• New webdev hire who started last week already fixing this problem.

2011 and beyond
• Build Mozilla into a massive, dynamic movement.
• Mozilla as a whole focuses more on engagement, less on marketing. Massive number of people become active supporters of Mozilla.
• Drumbeat projects generate useful ways for these people to participate. Also: deep local roots, create sustainability and innovation at the edge.
• ‘Give back’ at a bigger scale, drive innovation.
• As we become a successful fundraising organization, we are able to support Drumbeat projects and other initiatives at a much larger scale.
15
We need to remember: what we’re doing now is designed to set us up for bigger goals in future
