In commenting upon a passage in the Book of

Psalms-so the Ta lmud relates'-two rabbis ex-

p r e s s e d o p p o s i n g v i e w s . One held that " t h e t i m e

i s a d a p t e d t o t h e l e a d e r " ; t h e o t h e r , t h a t " t h e

l e a d e r i s a d a p t e d t o t h e t i m e . " A s i s s o o f t e n t h e

c a s e w h e n v i e w s d i v e r g e , b o t h p h r a s e s a r e e x p r e s -

s i o n s o f e t e r n a l t r u t h ." To very few men has it

b e e n g i v e n t o b e f a r a h e a d o f t h e f o r c e s t h e y w e r e

l e a d i n g . S u c h a f a c u l t y h a s b e e n r e s e r v e d f o r t h e

of the part played by Zionism in modern Jewish

I t i s q u i t e c e r t a i n t h a t t h e J e w i s h R e f o r m e r s a n d

t h e i r f o l l o w e r s w e r e a b s o l u t e l y s i n ce r e i n t h e i r t h e -

o r i e s a n d i n t h e i r a c t i o n s . They met the demands

o f t h e n e w l y - c r e a t e d s i t u a t i o n w i t h c h a r a c t e r i s t i c

energy . T h e y w e r e n o t m e r e l y s h o u t i n g t h e l a n -

g u a g e o f p a t r i o t i s m . They knew that the enjoy-

m e n t o f n e w r i g h t s c a r r i e d w i t h i t t h e o b l i g a t i o n o f

n e w d u t i e s ; t h e y h a d t o f i t J e w i s h t h o u g h t a n d J e w -

i s h o b s e r v a n c e i n t o t h e n e w g r o o v e s i n w h i c h t h e i r

l i v e s a n d t h e l i v e s o f t h e i r c h i l d r e n w e r e t o r u n .

A b o v e a l l , t h e y w i s h e d t o s a v e t h e J e w i s h r e l i g i o n ,

e v e n a t t h e e x p e n s e o f n a t i o n a l i t y a n d r a c e , n o t

r e a l i z i n g t h a t t h e t w o l a s t w e r e t h e c h i e f b u l w a r k s

o f t h e r e l i g i o n . They commenced to doff the Jew-

i s h g a b a r d i n e , t o s h u f f l e o f f w a y s , h a b i t s , a n d o b -

s e r v a n c e s t h a t s e e m e d t o r u n c o u n t e r t o t h e f o r m s

of modern conditions . F o r t h e m , i n v e r y t r u t h ,

t h e " East was the East and the West was the

West . " T h e y f e l t t h a t t h e y m u s t d o t h e i r s h a r e

I t i s n o t d i f f i c u l t t o s y m p a t h i z e w i t h t h e R e -

f o r m e r s i n t h e i r a t t e m p t t o s a v e J u d a i s m . This

w a s t h e k e r n e l , f o r w h i c h r i t e s , c e r e m o n i e s , a n d

observances mad e up the husk . Nor did they

imagine that the kernel could continue and be

s h o r n o f i t s h u s k . B u t t h e y d i d t h i n k t h a t t h e h u s k

w a s u n n e c e s s a r i l y t h i c k ; e v e n t h a t i t s w h o l e c h a r -

a c t e r c o u l d b e c h a n g e d a n d s t i l l r e m a i n t h e h u s k o f

t h a t p a r t i c u l ar k e r n e l . I n p o i n t o f f a c t , a g o o d p a r t

of the husk had commenced to be withered a nd

b l i g h t e d . V a r i o u s f o r m s h a d d i e d a n a t u r a l d e a t h

a n d h a d f a l l e n b y t h e w a y s i d e . Jews everywhere

h a d b r i d l e d a t s o m e o f t h e a n c i e n t c u s t o m s , a n d h a d

s i l e n t l y s u n k t h e m i n t o o b l i v i o n . B u t n o o f f i c i a l

a c t i o n h a d b e e n t a k e n . Very few of the changes

t h a t o c c u r r e d i n r i t u a l m a t t e r s d u r i n g t h e M i d d l e

A g e s h a d b e e n m a d e c o n s c i o u s l y o r w i t h d e l i b e r a -

t i o n . They had been accepted de facto and post

eventum . L e a s t o f a l l h a d s u c h a c t i o n b e e n t a k e n

i n m a t t e r s o f b e l i e f o r t h e o r y . B u t i t h a d a l w a y s

b e e n a J e w i s h p o s t u l a t e t h a t r e l i g i o n a n d l i f e w e r e

i n t i m a t e l y b o u n d u p o n e w i t h t h e o t h e r . T h e f i r s t

B u t a b s o l u t e c o n f o r m i t y i n a c t i o n , b o t h a s r e g a r d s

the individual and his neighbor and as regards

t h e p r e s e n t a n d t h e p a s t , b e i n g i m p o s s i b l e , t h e r e -

s u l t w a s i n e v i t a b l e . J e w i s h l i f e b e c a m e a t r o p h i e d ,

a n d Je w i s h b e l i e f , h a v i n g n o h o l d a n d n o s t a b i l i t y ,

s o o n l o s t a l l d i s t i n c t i v e ch a r a c t e r . The descendants

of the Mendelssohnian group have very largely

p a s s e d o u t o f J e w r y .

The German Reformers chose the other way to

break through the attachment . T h e y l a i d g r e a t

s t r e s s u p o n J e w i s h b e l i e f , u p o n t h e r e l i g i o u s s i d e .

J e w i s h l i f e a s s u c h d i d n o t a p p e a l t o t h e m w i t h

m u c h f o r c e , a n d , f r e e d f r o m w h a t t h e y c o n s i d e r e d

the "trammels " o f J e w i s h o b s e r v a n c e , J e w i s h b e -

l i e f b e c a m e i n t i m e w a t e r e d i n t o a t h i n l y - v e i l e d

t h e i s m . T h e m o s t s e r i o u s r e n u n c i a t i o n w a s t h a t

c o n n e c t e d w i t h t h e g r e a t h o p e o f I s r a e l ' s r e s t o r a -

t i o n , t h e p i v o t o n w h i c h J e w i s h s p i r i t u a l l i f e r e -

volved . T h e J e w i s h w o r l d h a d u n t i l t h e n b e l i e v e d

t h a t t h e d i s p e r s i o n w a s a p u n i s h m e n t . To the Re-

f o r m e r s i t b e c a me a b l e s s i n g . D i s p e r s i o n s h o u l d b e

e n c o u r a g e d , " s o t h a t t h e r e m i g h t b e w o r s h i p e r s

o f t h e o n e o n l y a n d t r u e G o d e v e r y w h e r e . " ' T h e

ence of 1845 voted that "all petitions for the

r e t u r n t o t h e l a nd o f o u r f a t h e r s , a n d f o r t h e r e s t o r -

a t i o n o f a J e w i s h s t a t e , s h o u l d b e e l i m i n a t e d f r o m

t h e p r a y e r s . " '

T h a t t h e R e f o r m m o v e m e n t h a s n o t f u l f i l l e d i t s

u n d e r t a k i n g , a n d t h a t t h e R e f o r m e r s w e r e m i s t a k e n

i n p a r t o f t h e t h e o r y o n w h i c h t h e y w o r k e d , m u s t n o t

b e l a i d t o t h e i r d i s c r e d i t . T h e y c o u l d n o t f o r e s e e

t h e g e n e r a l t r e n d o f t h e w o r l d ' s t h o u g h t a n d as p i r a -

t i o n ; t h e y c o u l d n o t p r e s a g e t h e e f f e c t o f t h e n e w

o r i e n t a t i o n u p o n t h e i r o w n d e s c e n d a n t s ; a n d, a b o v e

all, they could not measure the influence the

m a s s e s o f E a s t e r n E u r o p e w e r e t o e x e r c i s e i n i n t e r -

n a t i o n a l J e w r y , w h e n o n c e t h e i r w e i g h t w a s p u t i n

t h e b a l a n c e .

A t v a r i o u s t i m e s i n t h e h i s t o r y o f E u r o p e , t h e

p r i n c i p l e s o f i n t e r n a t i o n a l i s m a n d o f n a t i o n a l p a r -

t i c u l a r i s m h a v e f o u g h t f o r p r e d o m i n a n c e . I n t h e

Middle Ages the Church dreamed of a universal

C h r i s t i a n c o m m u n i t y , d i v i d e d i n t o n a t i o n a l i t i e s i t

i s t r u e , b u t a l l u n d e r t h e s w a y o f t h e a c k n o w l e d g e d

head of the Roman Church . Such dreams were

r u d e l y s h a t t e r e d b y t h e i n n e r d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e
