Unit 40 - Typographic and Layout Design

IMPORTANT: The following are TASKS (not to be confused with grading criteria)TASKS To gain a Pass: TASKS To gain a Merit: TASKS To gain a Distinction:

P1. Investigate conventions used in layout examples of

others Research the following;

- Page layout- Grids and columns- Golden section (Thirds)- Formatting; gutter, margins, headers and footers,

main body etc.- Folios – multi page layout- Information hierarchies, text flow -

M1. Compare and evaluate a range of layout and

typography examples you have collected and chosen

Use conventions mentioned in P1 as a part of you written work

D1. Show how the independently selected

and evaluated research you have carried out about typography and layout can inspire to your own ideas and opinions

P2. Investigate terminology used in typographic design Research the following;

- Fonts, founts, typefaces, type families- Punctuation- Ligatures - Type styles (light, roman, regular, italic, condensed,

expanded, body, copy, headings, tracking, kerning, leading, drop caps, serifs, san serifs, ascender, descender, cap-high, x-height

- Display; Indents, borders, paragraphs, panels

M2. Describe in your own word how terminology

and conventions are being used in several examples to create a particular effect or style

Show that you understand that these conventions are a part of the communication and that they express a message in their own right

D2. Produce exciting final promotional

outcomes that you have chosen to create from your own design brief which are innovative and creative in regards to layout and typography

P3. Explain what the terminologies in layout design actually

mean

M3. Use hand drawn images, letterforms,

thumbnails, rough sketches and collage to make artwork pieces that can be used as parts for your promotional items

Combine the above by using, photography, scanners, cameras, Photo Shop and InDesign to design your own promotional items. Also use manipulation and vector based formats

You should make a minimum of; 3 effective products (i.e. poster, flyer and cd cover or other options of your own choice

D3. Present your final promotional

outcomes in an effective way, mounted prints and digital versions, exhibition items

There should be 4 or more items showing a range of skills in typographic and layout design etc.

Evaluate your work by using correct terminology comprehensively

Include aesthetic qualities, opportunities and fitness for purpose

Unit 4 – Communication through Art and Design

IMPORTANT: The following are TASKS (not to be confused with grading criteria)

P1. Research others work and investigate

how they have used media, materials and processes to express a particular meaning or idea

This could mean;- Mystery, atmosphere, style,

attraction, provoke, sustain interest, sell, create mood, harmony, MOVEMENT and even unintended messages

M1. Evaluate your findings in P1 and create your

own examples and experiments in which you can compare to existing work

Incorporate the theme MOVEMENT to your experiments

D1. Communicate your intended meaning and message

you will express towards your target audience within the brief you have chosen in an imaginative way related to the theme MOVEMENT

Imaginative use of art and design language is important

P2. Show evidence of that you are able to

use visual language, such as; formal elements, feeling, symbols, impressions, compositions, pictures, visions, semantics, ideas and illustrations when you discuss research from P1

M2. Clearly explain the methods, materials and

media you intend to use to express a meaning or message in your promotional design outcomes, logos and images

Relate the above to the relevant target audience

You could do this as a detailed Specification

P3. Describe ways that you can use

photography, typography, illustration and visual language to communicate ideas and meanings

Unit 50 – Information Graphics

P1. Investigate Information Graphics briefs by

looking at flyers, magazine lay outs, book layouts, posters and other designed items

What do you think the designers have been asked to make?

M1. Effectively analyse and imagine what the

briefs would sound like in regards to your findings in P1; Explain what the product is, medium, message, target audience, constraints, client, time, cost, resources, ideas

D1. Independently investigate briefs for information

graphics and show how this can help you to become more inventive, engaging and innovative in your own work

P2. Develop ideas by using idea generating

techniques that you have learned in Unit 3 and the following;- Mood boards and mind maps, drawing,

painting, digital work, photography, thumbnail sketches and research

M2. Develop diverse, individual ideas into

effective promotional, information graphic design outcomes towards your own design brief and the theme MOVEMENT

Express messages such as;- Conceptual, abstract, subtle, complex,

non-figurative, or literal, factual, explicit, figurative

Use the following;- Pen, pencil, brushes, inks, digital

software, photography, manipulation, exploration

D2. Referring to Task Grid Unit 40

P3. Produce and present final design

outcomes, which is logo, graphic images and a minimum of 2 final designs as mentioned at the Task Grid Unit 40

M3. Produce and present effective solutions

according to the chosen brief in form of logo, graphic images and a minimum of3 promotional design outcomes including alternatives as worded in Task Grid Unit 40

Unit 3 – Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design

IMPORTANT: The following are TASKS (not to be confused with grading criteria)TASKS To gain a Pass: TASKS To gain a Merit: TASKS To gain a Distinction:

P1. Use references from Surrealism, Dadaism

and Cubism as well as Modernism to study the use of creative thinking, ideas and concepts

Compare ideas and concepts where you discuss thinking processes and effects from symbolism, metaphors, and visions

MOVEMENT; what can it mean and how can it be expressed?

M1. Show how the results of your investigation

can inspire your own ideas and your own concepts by demonstrating a connection between your findings and your own work purposefully

Relate some of these findings and reflections to the word MOVEMENT

D1. Use independent analysis and case studies, such

i.e. ‘Symbols in Art and Design’ in order to generate your own personal ideas and concepts where you use sophisticated thinking and modification from synthesizing to improve original ideas

P2. Investigate creative thinking techniques

and originality; Serial thinking, Lateral thinking, Free thinking, Structured thinking. Visual thinking

M2. Demonstrate a variety of approaches to ideas

that you consider to be good options for your later outcomes

Relate to theme MOVEMENT Create purposeful ideas for logos and

graphic image making and promotional items you have planned to make in relation to the chosen brief

D2. Show a wide perspective and individual approach,

which means originality and a well thought through process when you design your graphic images, visuals and logos and promotional items.

This also means incorporating more sophisticated ways of presenting your work, finish and display and evaluation

P3. Generate ideas using different creative

thinking processes and in response to the brief

P4. Present design outcomes and communicate

your products to different audiences

P1. Identify the use of graphic image making such as

symbols and logos and the use of letters, signs, images and illustrations as well as photographs. This could be in form of branding research and product labels, philosophies behind messages and symbols

M1. Describe how the use of graphic image

making and use has the ability to inspire you and your idea developments to create graphic images

Show the connection between your research and your ideas,

Relate to theme MOVEMENT

D1. Apply investigation, as in a case study or

analysis during the development process of your ideas

Use these findings and discovery of techniques and processes to produce your own graphic image outcomes which are original and innovative

Incorporate your definitions of MOVEMENTP2. Use the idea generating techniques and creative

thinking techniques you have studied in unit 3 to create relevant logo and images ideas for your chosen promotional items towards your brief MOVEMENT

M2. Be effective and demonstrate a

considered approach to using graphic image making when you create your artwork, logo, graphics and relevant to the promotional items you are making

Document health and safety guidelines in action

P3. Show you are able to demonstrate development of

ideas and concepts Improve your image making and logo ideas

P4. Create your final outcome against the brief This should include graphic media for, logos or

other graphic outcomes

M3 Present your final outcomes that answers

appropriately to the theme MOVEMENT of the brief you have chosen - annotate
