EU is planning to increase spending for research in ICT (though FP and Horizon 2020) over the period 2007-2020. The attention on research areas such as intelligent transport systems and ehealth (E-Health Action Plan 2020) is relevant.

The Connecting Europe Facility plan spans over the period 2012-2020 with the aim to create smart infrastructures in Europe. €11.5 billion will be invested in broadband access and ICT services. Within the Energy and Transport streams, there will be projects about the use of ICT.
