What will Term 2 bring apart from the annual inter- house athletics carnival, Under 8’s Day, report cards, Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN testing, Biloela Show Holiday, Biloela Eisteddfod? There will also be P&C meetings and fundraising, visits from Mrs Reiko Clissold, professional learning activities, visit from an Olympian, Year 5 camp, Year 4 excursion, Student Council activities, DV athletics day. Of course our most important activity for the term is TEACHING AND LEARNING! At the end of last term, teachers were given time to work with Mrs Michelle Lang, Head of Curriculum, to plan the Term 2 learning which was evident on day one of the new term with classes straight into routine and knowing where the term will be taking them in their teaching and learning journey. Being part of the school Anzac service and then a part of the school group attending the community Anzac Day march and service made me very proud to be principal of this great school. Everyone conducted themselves very well and there were plenty of compliments being given about our students at both occasions. We had approximately 125 students participate in the community ANZAC parade and service which is a wonderful effort (an increase on 100 students last year) – thank you!! An extra congratulations to our school leaders on their great job in leading our school service and standing out the front at the community parade. Many thanks to our Moura SS staff members for their contributions to this year’s ANZAC services. Further congratulations are extended to our Cross Country runners who participated in the RDSS trials in Rockhampton earlier this week – Sam, Heidi SS, Summer, Makalah, Madelyn, Saige, Ashley K, Chad, Alicia and Auz. An extra congratulations to Sam Gassman whose excellent running has rewarded him with selection in the RDSS team to participate in the Capricornia trials in Emerald in late May. It is wonderful to see the number of parents who have been taking the opportunity to meet with class teachers this week in our formal parent-teacher interview period – thank you! appointment through the Office. Teachers will also contact you for a discussion re your child’s learning. In order to keep up to date with what is happening at school, please ensure you read every newsletter and mark on your calendars when things are happening. Attending P&C meetings is another way to keep informed about school happenings. ATTENDANCE – EVERY DAY COUNTS Our school target for attendance is 92%. As you can see from the table below all classes are continuing to achieve above that target. A huge congratulations to Year 4C for achieving the highest attendance rate for Weeks 6-10 in Term 1!
We have 22% of our students who still have 100% attendance (down from 25% for the same period in 2018) with Year Prep/1H and Year 2W having the largest number of 100%ers. Way to go Team Prep/1H and Team 2W! Students with less than 85% attendance will continue to receive closer attention about the reasons for absences. With 13% of our students already at less than 85% attendance, many questions need to be asked – What are the explanations for absences? How can these students improve their attendance? How can we as a school community help these students? Good attendance is a team effort! CLASS NEWSLETTERS Term 2 class newsletters are being distributed by teachers. Please keep an eye out for these in your children’s school bags. These newsletters outline what is happening in individual classrooms around learning for the term. They also provide reminders about homework expectations, absences, Library days, and so on. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Our annual school Athletics Carnival is set for Wednesday 08 May. A program of events is an
attachment to today’s newsletter email group. Family and friends are invited to join us on this fun day in our school calendar. Student supervision: Please note that during the running events and meal breaks students will be sitting in their house areas in the care of school staff members on the oval side of the running track. Parents/visitors will sit on the seating side of the running track. Families/friends are welcome to cheer alongside their children at the rotational activities/events. Footwear: Participants in the running events will be required to wear their school shoes. They will also need to wear their shoes during shot put and discus events. Uniform: Students can wear their sports house shirts (ie red, yellow or green). They must have broad brimmed hats and shoes/socks. Sunscreen will be applied. Tuckshop: Students wishing to have Tuckshop food will need to have their orders completed on Flexischools by 5:00 pm on Friday 3 May (ie TOMORROW). They will not be heading to the Hall canteen to get their food, especially to get soft drinks. Many thanks in advance to Mrs Wendy Becker who will be looking after the Tuckshop side of things for us on the day. Our fabulous P&C members will be looking after the Hall Canteen. Extra pairs of hands throughout the day will be much appreciated. If students are not having purchased foods, they will need to bring their own lunches. Water bottles are essential for every student! DV Athletics: 10-12 year old students participating in the various events will be eligible to be selected to represent the school at the DV Athletics Carnival on Friday 24 May. YEAR 3/5 NAPLAN TESTING Year 3/5 students across the nation will be completing national literacy and numeracy tests on 14/15/16 May (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday). It is important that all our Year 3/5 students are in attendance on these days. Absent students have the opportunity to catch up with any missed tests on Monday 20 May.
Miss Reynolds and the Year 6 students are organising breakfast for these students for testing days. A note about requirements for the breakfast has been distributed to relevant families. A note has already been distributed to Year 3 and 5 students asking for their breakfast orders.
Information about NAPLAN tests is further in the newsletter plus an information pamphlet will be sent home with Year 3 and 5 students.
RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN FOR STUDENTS Shirts tucked in: Focus is given to students having their shirts tucked in for learning time and Parade. This means that at line up time, students will be ready for learning. The 3 School Rules: 1. Put your hand up to speak. 2. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. 3. Follow teacher directions immediately. All classrooms have these displayed with consequences, step charts and reward charts being used to reinforce these main school rules.
WINTER UNIFORM As we head into the cooler weather during Term 2 it is timely to remind everyone about our winter uniform requirements. The table below is copied directly from the Moura SS Prospectus 2019. ** Jeans are not part of the school uniform and are not to be worn to school. No strings on hats because it is a safety issue.
GENERAL REMINDERS 1. NO HAT, NO PLAY! A hat is one that has a
broad brim – not a cap. 2. Student Absences: It is a requirement that
student absences are explained. This can be done by phone call, note or email – either before the absence if it is a planned one, or after the event. Unexplained absences are recorded in the student’s records. MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT.
3. ALL GEAR NEEDS TO BE NAMED! 4. Jewellery: The only jewellery items allowed
to be worn at school are sleeper or stud earrings, signet rings and medic alert necklaces/bracelets.
5. Temporary tattoos/makeup: These items are not permitted. This includes fingernail polish.
6. Arrival time at School: If children arrive before 8:30 am, they are to sit and wait quietly in the bus line area until the 8:30 am bell when they are free to play quiet games.
7. Mobile Phones/Ipods/personal digital assistants/etc: Students are discouraged from having these items at school. If one comes to school, it needs to be named and placed at the office. They can be collected from the Office at 3:00pm.
8. Lunch packaging - NO tin cans or glass!!!

NAPLAN TESTS On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known.
Skills that will be tested include: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are done here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.
It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia.
NAPLAN cannot be studied for and students are not expected to do so. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is just a routine part of their school program, and to urge them to do the best they can on the day.
All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing.
Later in the year we will send you an individual student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and monitor how your child is progressing.
More information is available on the NAP website. If you have any concerns, please contact Laurel Bowkett, PRINCIPAL

On Tuesday, 23rd April Colin Boyce, Member of Parliament for Callide, visited Year 6R to discuss his role as a state member. The students are studying democracy and the different levels of government as one of their inquiry questions. Mr Boyce spoke about the different roles and responsibilities at state level and how citizens can demonstrate their rights through voting, protesting and petitioning against issues they did not agree with. He was also asked questions about the election process and rules of campaigning.
In Science this term, students are studying a unit called Electricity and Energy. They will be investigating electrical circuits as a means of transferring and transforming electricity. Students have been enjoying getting hands on through designing and constructing electrical circuits.
In Maths, we have been learning the Order of Operations using BOMDAS. The students have enjoyed using their conventions correctly and reinforced their rules by playing a dice operations game.
