There seems to be one constant in our Carbondale community andthat is Mountain Fair always falls the last full weekend of July. Ritual isgood. This year we can learn more about history and ritual from theoriginal inhabitants of this valley, the Utes. Chief Roland McCook is anamazing man and he has brought parts of his culture to share with us.We thank him! We also thank all of you for keeping the CarbondaleCouncil on Arts and Humanities strong and growing. Your member-ships, donations and participation is at the root of our success. Youare CCAH. Another way you can help is to throw a dollar or two in theold suitcases located at each entrance/exit. This money shows youbelieve in what we do, from Latino education, youth-in-and-after-school programming, Artist Beats, the R2 Gallery, free music and thefuture Creative Plan. This is what makes this community thrive withthe beat of so many drums and so many voices. Thanks for being partof our creative tribe!Happy fair!

History of the UtesUte is a Pueblo word. They called the people

living here “yutahs” when they guided theSpanish into this area. The Utes call themselvesthe Nuche, which means People, and believethat they were created and distributed in theRockies by Sanauf, (the Creator) who was halfwolf and half man. Anthropologists argue thatthe Utes began using the northern ColoradoPlateau between one and two thousand yearsago. The Ute Indians of the Shoshone Indian lin-guistic stock were originally divided into sevennomadic and forest-dwelling tribes that lived onvast territory in Colorado and parts of Utah andnorthern New Mexico prior to the arrival ofEuropean settlers. They were the Capote, theMouache, the Parianucs, the Tabeguache, theUintah, the Weeminuche, and the Yampa.Ute, which means “land of the sun,” also

gave the state of Utah its name. The Utebelieved they were closely related to the bear, ananimal featured prominently in Ute myths. TheUte were very respectful of the environment, never over-exploiting its resources, and theywould not hunt for sport, but only for food andclothing. Ute land included hunting grounds, along with places of spiritual importance. Before the first mining prospectors arrived in

the Roaring Fork Valley in 1879 the area hadbeen used by, and was home to, the Ute Indiansfor more than 800 years. Ute Indian summercamps were located throughout the valley. Aswhite settlers pushed west and the Utes wereforced to change their way of life, many prob-lems arose as a result of the Meeker incident in1879. The Utes were forced from their home-lands to live on reservations in a way of lifethat was not theirs. Today, approximately 5,500Utes still live in Colorado and Utah.

RE-USE IS THEBEST WAY TOREDUCE WASTE!Although most of the waste fromthe Fair is composted, the #1 wayfor you to personally reduce your“fair-print” and conserve localresources is to voluntarily bring yourown water bottles, coffee mugs, plates and utensils from home andwash them at the drinking waterstations. Please inquire in the Cantinaabout a discount for re-using your12 ounce plastic cup for liquor drinks.Remember, the New Belgium beer cupsare compostable, but they can be usedagain (no discount on beer, sorry).

COMPOST CORRECTLY,RECYCLE RIGHT,LANDFILL LASTSort your waste in the properly marked containers at ourWASTE STATIONS where you will find friendly volunteers.Just about anything you purchase from a food vendor goesin the green compost bins. All food scraps, utensils, plates, bowls, cups and paper products are compostable. We do not sell bottled water at the fair. We have severalWATER STATIONS full of clean mountain water marked withred and white water signs. Please bring your own reusablecontainer and keep it with you. Compostable cups are avail-able at the stations. Please promote re-use by leaving this program at theEntrance/Exits for others to use. .

ALCOHOL CANNOT BE BROUGHTINTO THE PARK OR TAKEN OUT.Buy your refreshments at the Sopris Cantina and walkaround the park (except for the Oasis). The Cantina sellsNew Belgium beer and our famous Freshies mojitos, as well

as some refreshing vodka concoction and Big B's hardciders. Special Bloody Marys will be available Saturday andSunday mornings. IDs and wristbands are required for persons drinking alco-hol. All coolers will be inspected at the entrances of the fair, and we expect all fairgoers to comply with these regulations.

BICYCLESMUST BE PARKED in the bike corrals at the Forest Service lotoff of Weant or the Seventh Street swimming pool area. Failureto comply may result in removal of your bike from the park.

HANDICAPPED PARKING &HANDICAPPED RESTROOMS Parking and handicapped-accessible rest-rooms are available at the U.S. Forest Serviceparking lot on Main Street, which allowseasy access into the Oasis area. Park restrooms are also handicappedaccessible. Proper identification must be posted onvehicles or they will be towed.

FIRST AID The Carbondale Volunteer FireDepartment will once again staff theFirst Aid Booth, located in front of thepavilion at the Open Space.

COOL DOWN A misting shower will be set upbehind the Gazebo at the corner ofSeventh & Euclid. Fairgoers are invitedto cool off throughout the day.

LAWN CHAIRS, UMBRELLAS& SHADE COVERINGSShade tents are chosen through a lottery process. Thisprocess ended on July 21. If you did not get a chance toparticipate we are very sorry. Our hope is to raise enoughmoney through our lottery system to create a large shadetent that will house many folks together and do away withindividual tents. This will happen sometime in 2014/2015.Lottery winners are still expected to share their space if theyare not using it.Lawn chairs placed in an arc in front of the sound boothmust be of the low variety, without a high back.

REMINDERSNo dogs, pets or glass allowed in the park.Citations will be issued.

No alcohol may be brought into the park or taken out. Bicycles must be parked at the fair’s perimeters.

Thanks for helping !
