L: As you walk with us, as we journey together, P: Lord, your word fills our hearts! L: As you speak with us, as your love is revealed, P: Lord, your fire burns in our hearts! L: As we proclaim what we have seen and heard, P: May all people be drawn to you, the risen Lord!

First Lesson – Hebrews 10:23-25 Steve Dennis

23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching .

*Gospel Lesson – Luke 24: 38-43 Steve Dennis

38 He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. [a] 41 While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence.

Mark your calendars and sign up now! The small groups committee will be starting three new virtual book

studies beginning the week of July 20.

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans. This is the last book by the author of Faith Unraveled. In this book, the author invites readers on a journey of rediscovery as she explores the magic of the Bible, engaging the old, familiar stories in new ways that honor the past and enlighten the present. Further information on this book and ordering information can be found on Cokesbury at https://tinyurl.com/y7lvbxwq This study will be held on Mondays at 7 pm beginning 7/20. Debra Leiss will facilitate. Zoom link is https://tinyurl.com/ybx5xheh Renovation of the Heart by Dallas Willard. This fresh approach to spiritual growth explains the biblical reasons why Christians need to undergo change in six aspects of life: thought, feeling, will, body, social context, and soul. Willard also outlines a general pattern of transformation in each area, not as a sterile formula but as a practical process that you can follow without the guilt or perfectionism so many Christians wrestle with. Further information on this book and ordering information can be found on Cokesbury at https://tinyurl.com/yad9qrbw This study will be held on Tuesdays at 10 am beginning 7/21. Debbie Burgio will facilitate. Zoom link is https://tinyurl.com/y9u8wa52 So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. This study will begin conversations around the difficult issues of race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life. Talking about these issues is not easy, but silence is not an option. Joining this dialog provides a basis to help us become outposts for love. Further information on this book and ordering information can be found on Cokesbury at https://tinyurl.com/ybznoase. This study will be held on Thursdays at 7 pm beginning 7/23. Debra Leiss will facilitate. Zoom link is https://tinyurl.com/y9hp23au

Youth and Children Summer Plans! We are “chunking” our Summer 2020 plans for Children's Ministry to allow us to adjust as re-opening plans progress. Beginning Sunday, July 5 through July 26 at 9:00 AM children ages 3 years - 5th grade are invited to join via Zoom (the link will be available at https://www.mtzionhighland.com/sermon-video) for music, fun skits, and Bible adventures. We will also have some awesome “Do It @ Home” ideas for crafts, games & snacks for families who are interested. Please watch for updates for children's & family activities as we are able to meet together in safe and appropriate ways. MT Zion Summer 2020 Youth Ministry. Now that Howard County and our Baltimore-Washington Conference have provided guidance for beginning to emerge from the strict isolation measures implemented in March, Mt. Zion believes it is in the best interest of our young people to provide a safe place for them to gather. The Health and Re-Entry Task Force and the Church Council have given approval for the Mt. Zion Youth Ministry to offer our young people finishing 6th – 12th grades opportunities to meet for fellowship and service projects beginning in July. Participation is based on the discretion of parents/guardians and on the ability of students to comply with the guidelines listed below. This plan is based on remaining in Phase 2 or better re-opening status, and may need to be re-evaluated in the event of a change in status.

Working Guidelines for Mt. Zion Youth Gatherings in July-August 2020

Outside only – no building access (not even restrooms)

Limit time to 45 minutes – 1 hour

Everyone wearing mask

Maintain 6 feet separation for activities

Hand Sanitizer available

Contact Tracing (1 person record attendance & contact info)

No food or beverages served – participants may bring own labelled water bottle & keep it apart from others

Limit multi-touch contact surfaces/activity supplies

Guidelines/expectations made clear to parents & participants in advance

Our goal is always to create an environment where young people are encouraged to live into their calling

in Christ as agents of God’s Reign within the household of God through nurture, empowerment &

belonging. We invite you pray for our youth, their families and our Mt. Zion Youth Ministry Leaders as

we navigate 2020.

Mt. Zion now offers online giving as another method for donating to the church. The Finance Committee

hopes online giving will prove a convenient method of giving. However, the committee is not encouraging

you to switch how you give if you like your current method. Online giving is simply another option. Choose

what works best for you. To give online, visit mtzionhighland.com/onlinegiving for instructions, an FAQ, and

access to the easiest and most secure way to send your offerings and gifts.

Try any one or all three of these options:

Visit https://mtzionhighland.com/onlinegiving and click “Online Giving” at the top of the page.

There you will find instructions, an FAQ, and a link to the online giving page.

Download the mobile app (“Church” by MinistryOne or ShelbyNEXT Giving)

Send a text message to 301-478-8800.

Also, we want to make an appeal to those of you with keys to the building. Please don’t use them to drop

off your pledges at the church. We have found offerings in multiple locations and we don’t want to

inadvertently miss any. Please mail them in. This will ensure they are kept in one location for processing

and will help us follow Governor Hogan’s Stay-at-Home order. If you have further questions, feel free

to reach out to Rob Eidson or other Finance Committee members.

Thank You for Your Stewardship. Mt. Zion thanks you for your continued financial support to the church

during this challenging time for all of us. Many of you have been mailing in your pledges and offerings and

have continued your prearranged electronic giving. Thank you. We know this health crisis is affecting

people’s lives in so many ways, emotionally, spiritually, and yes, financially. So the support you are able to

give to the church means so much as we continue paying our bills.

The Emergency Relief Committee’s purpose is to encourage church members to reach out to each other.

We have a rotating telephone tree so you would contact a different person each day. Ideally, this will help

social distancing not become social isolation, as well as encourage meaningful connections and new

friendships. Conversation starters would include: How are you doing? Any tips on surviving this social

distancing that you would like to share? Any prayer requests? Committee Members include Deb Leiss;

Art Jacques; Barb Jacques; Ken Sines; The Island Family; and Liam Cusack. If you are interested in

participating, please contact Deb Leiss.

News from Worship & Arts. Due to Governor Hogan's State Emergency requirements, County Executive

Calvin Ball’s decision to postpone relaxing restrictions in Howard County, and Bishop Easterling’s mandate

for all churches, we need to practice social distancing. We are using various ways for the congregation and

community to participate in worship. Excited by the participation in our live streaming worship services, we

continue live streaming the service at 10 AM each Sunday. Because of this order, instead of live-streaming

from the sanctuary we will doing this at the homes of our selected worship participants. You can log on to

the service on Sunday via the link on the Mt. Zion website — www.mtzionhighland.com. These are

challenging days. The staff and leadership of Mt. Zion are committed to finding new ways to help connect

you not only in worship but in other areas of the church’s life as well. We thank you for your commitment

to Mt. Zion church and its continuing ministries.
