3RV1 Motor Starter ProtectorsCage Clamp Infeed System SIRIUS

    Overview

The Cage Clamp infeed system is a convenient means of powersupply and distribution for a group of several motor starter pro-tectors or complete load feeders with a Cage Clamp connectionsystem.

These devices are available in the SIRIUS modular system up to5.5 kW at AC 400 V. For higher power ratings, motor starter pro-tectors of size S0 with screw connection (up to 11 kW atAC 400 V) can be integrated into the system.

    Design

The system is based on a basic module complete with a lateralincoming unit (3-phase busbar with infeed). This incoming unitwith Cage Clamp terminals is mounted on the right or left de-pending on the design and can be supplied with a maximumconductor cross-section of 25 mm2 (with end sleeve). A basicmodule has two sockets onto each of which a motor starter pro-

tector can be snapped. Expansion modules are available for ex-tending the system (3-phase busbars for system expansion). The individual modules are connected through an expansionplug.

Electrical connection between the 3-phase busbars and the cir-cuit-breakers is implemented through plug-in connectors. Thecomplete system can be mounted on a 35 mm standard rail toEN 50022 and can be expanded as required up to a maximumcurrent carrying capacity of 63 A.

The system is mounted extremely quickly and easily thanks tothe simple plug-in technique. Thanks to the lateral infeed, thesystem also saves space in the control cabinet. The additionaloverall height required for the infeed unit is only 30 mm. The al-ternative infeed possibilities on each side offer a high degree offlexibility for configuring the control cabinet: infeed on left-handor right-hand side, ring infeed or infeed on one side and loop-through from the other side to supply further loads are all possi-ble.

     3-phase busbars with infeed

A 3-phase busbar with infeed unit is required for connecting theincoming supply. This module comprises one infeed module and2 sockets which each accept one motor starter protector. Achoice of two designs with infeed on the left or right is available. The incoming supply is connected via Cage Clamp terminals. The Cage Clamp springs permit conductor cross-sections of upto 25 mm2 with end sleeves. An end cover is supplied with eachmodule.

     3-phase busbars for system expansion

The 3-phase busbars for system expansion support expansionof the system. There is a choice of modules with 2 or 3 sockets. The system can be expanded as required up to a maximum cur-rent carrying capacity of 63 A. An expansion plug is suppliedwith each module.

     Expansion plug

The expansion plug is used for electrical connection of adjacent3-phase busbars. One expansion plug is supplied with each3-phase busbar for system expansion. Further expansion plugsare therefore only required as spare parts.

     End cover

The end cover is used to cover the 3-phase busbar at the openend of the system. This cover is therefore only required once foreach system. An end cover is supplied with each 3-phase bus-bar system with infeed. Further end covers are therefore only re-quired as spare parts.

     Plug-in connector

The plug-in connectors are used for the electrical connectionbetween the 3-phase busbar and the motor starter protector. There are two different designs. One design is for S00 motorstarter protectors with Cage Clamp connection and one is for S0motor starter protectors with screw-type connection.

    Contactor base

Load feeders can be assembled in the system using the contac-tor base. The contactor bases are suitable for contactors of size

S00 with Cage Clamp connection and are simply snapped ontothe 3-phase busbar. Direct-on-line starters and reversing start-

ers are possible. One contactor base is required for direct-on-line starters and two are required for reversing starters. To as-semble load feeders for reversing starters, the contactor basescan be arranged either below each other (45 mm overall width)or alongside each other (90 mm overall width). It is important tonote that mechanical interlocking of the contactors is only possi-ble when they are arranged vertically.

The infeed system is designed for mounting on a 35 mm stan-dard rail with 7.5 mm overall depth. This standard rail gives thecontactor base a stable mounting surface to sit on. If standardrails with a depth of 15 mm are used, the spacer connected tothe bottom of the contactor base must be knocked out andplugged into the mating piece that is also on the underside. Then the contactor base also has a stable mounting surface. When standard rails with a depth of 7.5 mm are used, the spacerhas no function and can be removed.

As an alternative to using a contactor base, for load feeders fordirect-on-line starters of size S00, the 3RA19 11-2E electrical linkmodule can also be used. Motor starter protectors and contactorassemblies can then be directly snapped into the sockets of the3-phase busbars. For feeders of size S0, the corresponding3RA19 21-1.... link modules should generally be used. For thissize, it is only possible integrate load feeders for direct-on-linestarters and they must be integrated in the system as completeassemblies.

    3RV10 . A as "Manual Self-protected Combination Motor Controller Type E"

    As of 16 July 2001, UL 508 de-mands a line-side 1 air and 2

creepage distance for "Combi-nation Motor Controller Type E".Therefore, 3RV10 MSP’s of sizeS0 and S3 are approved to UL508 in combination with the ter-minal blocks listed below.

The basic unit of MSP 3RV10 insize S2 conforms with the re-

quired air/creepage distances.CSA does not demand theseextended air/creepage distanc-es. According to CSA, theseterminal blocks can be omittedwhen the device is used as"Combination Motor ControllerType E".

3RV10 MSP’s are approved foroperation as "Manual Self-pro-

tected Combination Motor Con-troller, Type E" under the follow-ing file numbers and with thelisted data:

    u File No. E156943,Product Class NKJHs File No. LR12730,Product Class 3211 08.

When a 3RT contactor is con-nected to the load side of a

3RV device that is rated as a"Manual Self-protected Combi-nation Motor Controller, TypeE", the assembly can beapplied as a "CombinationMotor Controller, Type F". Thisversions allows for remotestarting and stopping of themotor load.

    Overview

S00 MSP withlaterally mounted undervoltage re-lease with leading auxiliary switch 3RV10 Motor Starter Protectors

(MSP’s) are built for a world ofapplications while meeting therequirements of control users

worldwide. Each MSP featuresa manual ON/OFF switch, aClass 10 adjustable bimetallicoverload relay (Class 20 avail-able in the two largest framesizes), and magnetic trip ele-ments for short circuit protec-tion.

    Construction

The motor starter protectors areavailable in four sizes:

    • Size S00 - 3RV101Maximum rated current is 12Amps. Suitable for motors upto 10 hp at 600V. Available inboth screw terminal and CageClamp versions.

    • Size S0 - 3RV102Maximum rated current is 25Amps. Suitable for motors upto 20 hp at 600V.

    • Size S2 - 3RV103Maximum rated current is 50Amps. Suitable for motors upto 50 hp at 600V.

    • Size S3 - 3RV104Maximum rated current is100 Amps. Suitable formotors up to 100 hp at 600V.

    Functions

    Releases

    3RV1 motor starter protectorsare equipped with bimetallic-based, inverse-time delayedoverload releases - electromag-netic short-circuit releases.

The overload releases can beset in accordance with the loadcurrent. The overcurrent re-leases are permanently set to avalue 13 times the rated currentand thus enable trouble-freestart-up of motors.

The scale cover can be sealedto prevent unauthorized adjust-ments to the set current.

    Release classes

The release classes of thermallydelayed releases are based onthe tripping time (tA) at 7.2 timesthe operational current in coldstate (excerpt from IEC 60 947-4):

    • CLASS 10 A2 s < tA w 10 s•CLASS 10 4 s < tA w 10 s•CLASS 20 6 s < tA w 20 s•CLASS 30 9 s < tA w 30 s

The release must trip within thistime!

    Operating mechanisms

S00 MSP are actuated via arocker operating mechanismand S0, S2 and S3 MSP’s via arotary operating mechanism. Ifthe MSP trips, the rotary operat-ing mechanism switches to thetripped position to indicate this. Before the MSP is reclosed, therotary operating mechanismmust be reset manually to 0position, in order to prevent theformer from closing by mistakebefore the fault has beencleared.

In the case of MSP’s with rotaryoperating mechanisms, anelectrical signal can be outputvia a signalling switch to indi-cate that the MSP has tripped.

All operating mechanisms canbe locked in 0 position with apadlock (shackle diameter3.5 to 4.5 mm).

    ApplicationOperating conditions

3RV1 MSP’s are suitable for usein any climate. They aredesigned for operation inclosed rooms under normalconditions (e.g. no dust, corro-sive vapours or harmful gases).Suitable enclosures must beprovided for installation in dustyor damp rooms.

    Motor Protection

3RV MSP’s use bimetallicheater elements to provideclass 10 or 20 overcurrent pro-tection for both AC and DCmotors. The bimetallic heaterssense the motor currentdirectly, so the overloads areinsensitive to high frequencies, harmonic waves and sinusoi-dal currents and voltages.

Each MSP has a fourth bimetal-lic strip that reacts only to theambient temperature inside thecontrol panel. This ambientcompensation prevents theMSP from nuisance trippingwhen the panel temperature ishigher than the ambient tem-perature of the motor.

A built-in differential trip barcauses the MSP to trip fasteron a phase loss condition, tohelp reduce motor damagefrom phase loss.

Magnetic trip elements in eachMSP take the device off linewhen it senses currents of 12times the maximum FLA dialsetting.

    Mounting accessories

    Applications:

The 3RV10 MSP’s can beused in a variety of applica- tions:

    As a manual starter

All 3RV MSP’s are UL listed asManual Motor Controllers perUL508. This makes them idealfor applications requiring sim-ple manual starting and stop-ping of motors. A separateshort circuit protective device, such as a circuit breaker orfuses, is still required ahead ofthe MSP. This up-stream pro-tective device should be sizedper NEC code, not to exceed400% of the maximum FLAadjustment dial setting.

As a component in a groupinstallation

    A group motor installation indi-

cates multiple motor controllersunder one short circuit protec-tive device, such as a circuitbreaker. 3RV MSP’s have agroup installation short-circuitcurrent rating of 65 kA at 480Vand up to 30kA at 600V. Byusing a link module, a 3RT con-tactor can be directly mountedto the load side of the MSP.

3RV MSP’s have been ULtested with and without 3RTcontactors for group installa-tion.

    As a Self-protected manualcombination starter, Type E.

Most 3RV MSP’s have also beenUL listed as UL508 Type E, Self-protected Manual CombinationStarters. This UL listing allowsthe MSP to be mounted in amanually operated machinewithout having to add separateshort circuit protectionupstream.

    These devices have a short cir-cuit current rating of 65 kA @240V, 480Y/277V and up to30kA @ 600Y/347V.

As part of a Combination Mo- tor Contoller, Type F

When a 3RT contactor is con-nected to the load side of a 3RVdevice that is rated as a "Man-ual Self-protected CombinationMotor Controller, Type E", theassembly can be applied as a"Combination Motor Controller,Type F". This versions allows forremote starting and stopping ofthe motor load.

These assemblies have a shortcircuit current rating of 65 kA @240V, 480Y/277V and up to 30kA @ 600Y/347V.

As a circuit breaker for export

When exporting to many coun-tries outside of the U.S. andNorth America, the 3RV can beapplied as a thermal magneticcircuit breaker for use in motorbranch circuits.

    Terminals for "Combination Motor Controller Type E" to UL 508 3RV19 28-1H 3RT19 46-4GA07

Terminals for "Combination Motor Controller Type E" to UL 508

The 3RV10 MSP for motor pro-

tection is approved according toUL 508 as "Combination MotorController Type E".

As of July, 2001, UL 508demands at line-side of thedevice used for this purpose anincreased clearance and creep-age distance (1" or 2").

Here, the terminal block 3RV1928-1H must be used for size S0.The block is simply screwed tothe basic unit.

Basic units of size S2 arealready compliant with newclearance and creepage dis-tance requirements.

    The terminal block 3RT19 46-

4GA07 must be used for sizeS3. The standard box terminal isto be replaced by this terminalblock.

According to CSA, these termi-nal blocks can be omitted whenthe device is used as "Combina-tion Motor Controller Type E".

By using a link module, a 3RT10contactor can be directly mount-ed to the load side of a 3RV MSP.This assembly of a 3RV and a3RT provides a complete, re-motely operated, combinationstarter, Type F.

    DC switching

3RV1 AC MSP’s are also suitablefor DC switching.

    The maximum permissible DC

    voltage per conducting path

    must, however, be adhered tohere.

    Higher voltages require a series

circuit with 2 or 3 conductingpaths.

The response value of the over-load release remainsunchanged, the response valueof a short-circuit release

increases by approximately30 % for DC.

The recommended circuits forDC switching can be seen inthe table below.

    Notes

    DC 150 V 2-pole switching, earthed system 1)

If earth faults can be excluded or immediately remedied (earth-fault monitor-ing), the max. permissible DC voltage can be tripled.

    DC 300 V 2-pole switching, earthed system

The earthed pole must always be assigned to a specific conducting path, sothat in the event of an earth fault two conducting paths wi ll be connected inseries.

    DC 450 V 1-pole switching, earthed system

3 conducting paths connected in series. The earthed pole must be assigned to the disconnected conducting path.

    Design

    Mounting

The motor starter protectors aresecured in position by snap-ping them onto 35 mm standardmounting rails according to DINEN 50 022. A mounting rail witha height of 15 mm is requiredfor S3 MSP’s. A 75-mm mount-ing rail can be used as an alter-native here.

    S2 and S3 MSP’s can also bescrewed directly onto a base-plate.

    The push-in lugs 3RB19 00-0Bare available for screw mount-ing of S00 and S0 MSP’s.

    Screw connection

3RV1 MSP’s of sizes S00 andS0 are fitted with terminals withcaptive screws and clampingpieces, allowing the connectionof 2 conductors with differentcross-sections.

The box terminals of the S2 andS3 MSP’s also enable 2 con-

ductors with different cross-sections to be connected. Withthe exception of S3 MSP’swhich are equipped with 4 mmh
