MotorsFacelift forthe PhaetonVOLKSWAGEN’S luxury saloon the Phaeton willhave a fresh face and more imposing stance when ithits the road this summer.

The German company has just lifted the wraps onthe updated model and pledges new technologies forwhat is already one of the most advanced andthoroughly engineered cars on the market.

Fans of the Dresden-built limo can expect to see anew front end comprising bi-xenon headlight unitscomplete with LED running lights and a newgrille featuring two pronounced horizontal bars.

Elsewhere new front wings and a reworkedbonnet are joined by a revised front bumpercomplete with chrome strips and a set of LEDfoglights.

At the rear, a set of light units fitted withintricate lenses sit above a redesigned bumper,and there are also new alloys wheels.

Inside, a new steering wheel and colourelectronic display ahead of the driver are backedup by fresh trim finishes and – for the first timeon a Volkswagen – the option of Google Maps onsat-nav.

Two wheelbase options will be offered plus achoice of two engines – a 3.0-litre V6 TDI dieseldeveloping 240PS and a 6.0-litre W12 petrol engineproducing 450PS.

The new Phaeton goes on sale in August withprices and specifications set to be announced nearerthe time.

Meriva is set tobecome theRolls-Royce of compactpeople carriers, in

more ways than one. When itgoes on sale in July, thepopular model will not onlyboast a sleeker, sharper suit ofclothes but also become themost family-friendly car of itskind – and the reason hingeson the doors.

Instead of theforward-opening back doorsyou expect to find, these onesare rear-hinged and swingopen towards the tail of thecar.

Not only is entry and exitmuch easier, regardless ofpassenger size, but so too issecuring kids in child seats,an awkward job at the best oftimes.

Vauxhall can’t claim to befirst with this concept butwith the exception of theRolls-Royce Phantom andGhost, Meriva is the onlyproduction car to have reardoors that open independentlyfrom those in front.

But the versatility doesn’t

stop there. There’s alsoFlexRail, a three-tier storagesystem based on rails runningbetween the front and backseats in space freed up byVauxhall’s decision to use anelectronic parking brakeinstead of a handbrake.

The top track carries a flip-top box big enough to carryCDs while the lower one has astorage tray with cup holder.

Then there’s the FlexSpaceseating which allows the cabinto be transformed from a fiveto two-seat layout dependingon how much luggage space isneeded, and the outer rearseats can be moved forwards,backwards or even inwards.

And to highlight the sort ofattention to detail evident inthis car is the way the rearside window edges have beencut away to help youngchildren see out more easily.

Boot capacity is alsoimproved and you now get aparcel shelf that can bealtered to suit the size of loadwhile there’s also a concealed

lower stowage area. This isnot only a larger car than theoutgoing Meriva, but one thathas moved up a class.

Vauxhall says its maincompetitors are models likethe Ford C-MAX, Mercedes AClass five-door, Renault Scenicand Citroen C4 Picasso.

Certainly the Meriva is wellequipped to succeed in thiscompany. The new,cooler-looking car’s overall fitand finish is more in keepingwith upmarket stablemate theInsignia.

From launch there will be achoice of three 1.4-litre petrol

engines – the naturallyaspirated one produces 100PSand 46.3mpg, while the 120PSturbo should return the samefigure and 140PS turbo anofficial 42.2mpg.

The diesel line-upcomprises a 75PS 1.3-litreCDTi engine with fuelconsumption of 57.6mpg andemissions of just 129g/km plusa 100PS 1.7-litre CDTi, alsoavailable with a six-speed autotransmission, which is a firstin the Meriva range.

Early autumn will see a lowemissions ecoFLEX variantpowered by a 95PS 1.3-litre

CDTi unit and a 1.7 CDTi withsix-speed manual gearbox and130PS joining the party.

Both the turbochargedpetrol models were availablefor test and were rewarding todrive with ample punch andthe feel of a family hatchbackrather than a people carrier.The bespoke UK steeringprogramme adds much morefeel and balance.

It’s a shame that safetysystems appreciated by mums– like Hill Start Assist whichstops the car rollingbackwards down a slope, andthe alert warning driversabout a loss of tyre pressure –are extra cost options, butthen the £150 premium ismoney well spent.

Overall the new Meriva is acracking car – it’s practical,handsome, well made andfamilies are going to love it.

Prices are from a tempting£12,995 for the 1.4-litre 100PSExpression model while the120PS turbo starts with the Sgrade at £16,215. Diesels startat £16,875 for the 1.3 CDTi Sand topping the pile is the 1.7CDTi SE automatic at £21,255.
