This original Range Rover will be auctioned at Salon Prive, to be held at Syon Housein London, on the 4th September.

The Range Rover story begins in the 1960s, when Rover acknowledged thedemand for a new, more recreational type of off-road vehicle and so developmentbegan in 1967 headed by Charles Spencer King. This car was built between 24thNovember and 17th December 1969, before being registered on 2nd January 1970,nearly six months before the official launch date of the Range Rover. The first ownerof the car was Michael Furlong, the producer of two promotional films for the model.

In 1975 the car, by thistime resprayed in BahamaGold, passed onto a newowner. Changes toregistrations, as well ascolour, meant that chassisnumber 001 was lost for anumber of years, passingthrough another owner, untildiscovered by the currentvendor in the early 1990s.

What followed was a professional, six year ground up restoration, both bodily andmechanically, executed to an exceptional standard, as well as taking it back to itsoriginal Olive Green colour.

Unusually, the vehicle retains all its matching numbers components; chassis,engine, gearbox, axles, as well as the original aluminium bonnet and original bodyshell. In 1997 the DVLA reissued Range Rover 001 with its original registrationnumber YVB 151H.

It is estimated that it could go for between £100,000 and £140,000.

e have had a Kia Rio estate car inour family since 2004. It serves uswell and it gives an average fuelconsumption of around 34 mpg (8.3lt/100 km). Originally it was boughtbrand new by my youngest son andwhen he moved on to a sporty opentwo seater roadster a few years

later, my wife and I took it over as our family car. I love itsstyling and its light grey interior and still get a great dealof driving satisfaction from it. It has taken us all over thecountry and across the Irish Sea to Britain to visitmembers of the family who are now living and workingthere. However, as it has the basic specification it does nothave electric windows, which both my wife and I find a bitannoying and its low sporty build is now becoming a bitless comfortable as old age begins to catch up on us.

Recently my road test programme for the Kia Soulcoincided with a planned visit to Britain to visit my twosons who are now both resident in the UK. The plannedroute took us from Malahide to Belfast, where we got theStena Line ferry to Cairnryan. From Cairnryan we droveacross south west Scotland and northern England toGateshead, where my youngest son is currently living.After spending a week in Gateshead we drove south toCamberley in Berkshire, where my eldest son lives. Whilstin southern England I took the opportunity to visit theHaynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford,Somerset. Our return journey from Camberley was toHolyhead in Wales, where we got the Stena Line ferry backto Dublin port. The test thus covered a wide variety ofroads and traffic conditions, from motorways, dualcarriageways, city and suburban traffic to narrow andtwisting country lanes. It also offered the opportunity toaccess the Kia Soul as a comfortable touring car and apractical every day family car. I am delighted to say that it

around three hours.A family car needs to have an adaptable luggage

space. The Soul has 0.354 cubic meters of covered spacewhen all five seats are in use and this can be expanded to3.167 cubic metres when the rear seat backs are folded,the parcels shelf removed and only the two front seats areneeded. Below the luggage floor there is a large plastictray, divided into three compartments, which is very handyfor carrying smaller items. The Spacesaver spare wheel isstored below this tray.

The journey from Malahideto Belfast Ferry Port, usuallytakes about two hours. It ismainly motorway all the wayand the Kia Soul diesel cruisedalong with an effortless ease at120 kph (75 mph). The enginewas smooth and quiet in mostgears, making the car a relaxingpleasure to drive. The largeexterior rear view mirrors andthe internal rear view mirrorgive a clear picture of all thetraffic approaching from behind.The leather covered steeringwheel has an excellent highquality feel and the steeringitself is smooth and effortless.The higher build of the Soul alsomakes it more comfortable and relaxing to drive in bothcity and suburban traffic, as well as on fast motorways.

The journey from Cairnryan to Gateshead normallytakes about four hours, cruising at around 60 mph (96kph). I have done it in three and a half hours in aVolkswagen Golf GT with a turbocharged 1.4 litre engineand a six speed gearbox. On this trip there was a lot oflarge trucks and other traffic on the road, so cruising at 60mph was not a good option, as you would be permanentlystuck behind a lot of slow moving heavy traffic, making itdifficult to pass. The best option was to use the middle andright hand lane, where these were provided and to keepmoving at 75 mph (120 kph). In spite of the hold-ups, slowmoving sections and large volume of traffic on the roads,we managed the Cairnryan to Gateshead journey in

well as to older people who may have grown upchildren and grandchildren. The higher build makesit easier to fasten small children into their safetyseats, or release them when the journey is over andit is also more comfortable for older people gettingin or out.

All this versatility helps to make it a highlypractical and versatile family car, for young familiesand older people alike. In addition to the above, ifthe need arises, the Kia Soul diesel can tow brakedtrailers/caravans of up to 1300 kg in weight, orunbraked trailers of up to 550 kg. It can also carryup to 70 kg on the roof in a suitable roof box orcontainer. However, if you are thinking of towing atrailer, it may be advisable to get a full size sparewheel for the occasion.

One important factor for any family car are itsrunning costs. By EU testing standards, the Kia Souldiesel, with the six speed manual gearbox, delivers

From a driving point of view,all the instruments and controlsare well laid out for comfort andease of use. The hooded binnaclebehind the steering wheelcontains two large, round,analogue instruments, with blackbackgrounds, white lettering andred needles. The tachometer is onthe left and the speedometer onthe right. Between them there isa digital information panel, alsowith a black background andwhite lettering, that displays a

variety of selectable information,like the mileage, average fuelconsumption etc. The steeringwheel has selectors for thingslike the cruise control, mobiletelephone and certain operationsof the audio system. The largeupper panel in the centre consolecontains a screen that shows thetime and other selectable itemsassociated with the audiosystem. The smaller panel belowit has the selectors for operationsconnected with the heating andventilation system. The gearleverfalls conveniently to hand in thecentre tunnel and has a smooth

The latest generation Ford Mustang will go on sale in the United Statestowards the end of this year. Since it was introduced in the United Statesin the latter half of 1964 around 9.2 million examples have been sold inthe US to date. A further 161,000 have been sold in other markets around

the world. Unfortunately up to now there has never been a right hand driveversion.

That is all about to change, as engineers are currently carrying out tests anddevelopment work on a right hand drive version of the latest model. This willthen be available to 25 right hand drive markets around the world.

The first right hand drive models are expected to be launched on the UKmarket early in 2015.

International Motor Sports Limited has announced that the2015 Spring Classic will be based at the Vale Resort Hotel,near Cardiff, over the weekend of the 25th and 26th April.Details of the full two day, non competitive route will bepublished when entries open later in the year. IMS, though,has confirmed that the itinerary will again include amagical mix of great driving roads, plus a number ofcultural, motor sport and other places of interest, allchosen specifically to provide a memorable weekend ofclassic motoring.The MSA Spring Classic is open to all owners of classiccars that are more than 20 years old and has a capacity

of just 100 entries. With so much to see and do, last year’stour boasted a full entry and even had a waiting list ofdisappointed drivers. Indeed the cars brushing off theirwinter cobwebs earlier this year, included a lexicon of trueclassics from the golden era of the British sports carindustry. Among these were number of iconic makesincluding Alvis, Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Bentley,Jaguar, Lotus, MG, Morgan, Sunbeam, Triumph and TVR.They were joined by classics from right around the globe,with brands such as Porsche and Mercedes representingEurope, while Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Corvettesadded a little American V8 thunder to proceedings
