Multiple Options
Several options for protection andcommunications are provided to matchbasictohighendapplicationrequirements.
Protection & ControlThe 339 motor protection system isdesigned to protect and manage smallto medium sized AC motors and drivenequipment . Flexible and powerful, the339providesadvancedmotorprotection,controlandmonitoringinoneintegrated,economical draw-out design. The 339contains a full range of self containedprotection and control elements asdetailed in theFunctionalBlockDiagramandFeaturestable.
Motor Thermal Model
To provide optimal protection andmaximum runtime, the 339 MotorProtectionSystememploysGE’sIndustryleading advanced Thermal Model, consistingofsixkeyelements:
• OverloadCurves
• UnbalanceBiasing
• Hot/ColdSafeStallRatio
• MotorCoolingTimeConstants
• ThermalInhibitandEmergencyRestart
• RTDBiasing
FlexCurves
Asmoothcustomoverloadcurveiscreatedusing FlexCurves. These curves can beused to protect motors with differentrotordamageandstatordamagecurves, allowingtotalmotordesigncapacitywithcompleteprotection.
Enhanced Diagnostics
Preventative Maintenance
The339allowsusertotrackrelayexposureto extreme environmental conditions bymonitoring and alarming at high or lowtemperatures. This data allows users toproactivelyscheduleregularmaintenanceworkandupgradeactivities.
Failure Alarm
The 339 detects and alarms oncommunication port and IRIG-B failures. The 339 also enables users to analyzesystem performance via diagnosticsinformation such as event records,oscillography,etc.Itissuesdetailedmotorhealthreportsandalarmswhenthresholdsareexceeded.
Cost Effective
Robust Design
The 339 is subjected to AcceleratedLife Testing (ALT) to validate accuraterelay functions under specified normalconditions.Thedeviceisfurthertestedfordurability throughHigh Accelerated LifeTesting (HALT), undergoing stress testingforextremeoperatingconditions.
Reduced Life Cycle Cost
The 339 is designed to reduce totalinstallation and life cycle cost formotorprotection. The draw out constructionof the device reduces downtime duringmaintenance and decreases extrawiring needed for relay testing andcommissioning.
Over/Under Voltage Protection
Overvoltage / Undervoltage protectionfeatures can cause a trip or generatean alarm when the voltage exceeds aspecified voltage setting for a specifiedtime.
Frequency Protection
The 339 offers overfrequency andunderfrequency protection elementsthat provide the ability to detect whenthe motor is operating at off-nominalfrequencieswhichcancausedamagetotheprocess.Insuchcases,theprotectionelementscantripthemotoroff-lineorcanbeusedtosignaltoupstreamprotectionand control devices to implement load-sheddingschemes.
Unbalance (Negative Sequence) Biasing
Negativesequencecurrent, whichcausesadditionalrotorheating, isnotaccountedfor in the thermal limit curves providedbythemanufacturer. The339measurescurrentunbalanceasaratioofnegativetopositivesequencecurrent.Thethermalmodel is then biased to reflect theadditionalrotorheating.
RTD Biasing
The Thermal Model relies solely onmeasured current to determinemotor heating, assuming an ambienttemperature of 40°C and normalmotorcooling. The actualmotor temperaturewill increase due to abnormally highambient temperatures or if the motorcoolingsystemshavefailed.
modelbycalculatingthethermalcapacityused based on available Stator RTDtemperatures.
RTD Biasing does not replace the TCUcalculated using the motor current . Itprovides a second and independentmeasure of thermal capacity used.Based on a programmable curve, the339will calculate the TCU at any giventemperature.ThisTCUisthencomparedto that of the thermal model, and thelargerofthetwowillbeused.
The339hasatrueexponentialcooldowncharacteristicwhichmimicsactualmotorcoolingrates,providingthatmotorcoolingtimeconstantsareavailableforboththestoppedandrunningstates.WhenorderedwithRTD’sthestoppedandrunningcooltimeconstantswill becalculatedby the339 based on the cooling rate of thehottest RTD, the hot/cold stall ratio, theambient temperature, the measuredmotor loadandtheprogrammedservicefactororoverloadpickup.
Start Inhibit

Motor Start Supervision
Motor Start Supervision consists of thefollowing features: Time-Between-Starts,Starts-per-hour,RestartTime.
