CAT GRADER EDGES . . .
Job-matched for Most Efficient Blade PerformanceCaterpillar offers three types of grader edges — curved, flat and serrated. The standard curved type is offered in two widths, four thicknesses and sixlengths to fit every possible job condition and moldboard. The standard flattype is offered in two widths, four thicknesses and four lengths. All Catgrader edges are made of tough, thru-hardened DH-2™ steel for strength andwear resistance. They are unconditionally guaranteed against breakage.
CAT MOTOR GRADER CUTTING EDGE APPLICATION GUIDE
For Most ApplicationsRecommend curved or flat 0.63" (16 mm) or 0.75" (19 mm) thick edges. Thethicker, 1" (25 mm) edges should be used when abrasive wear is a greaterproblem than penetration; the thinner edges when penetration is critical.
Recommend 8" (203 mm) wide edges for more wear material and feweredge changes.
For Finish GradingRecommend 0.50" (13 mm) thick curved edges. They provide good pene -tra tion and stay sharp longer. There is less throw-away iron than withthicker edges.
For Severe ApplicationsRecommend 1.38" (35 mm) thick by 10" (254 mm) or 1" (25 mm) thickby 10" (254 mm) wide flat edges. They provide maximum strength andwear material. In severe applications these edges will provide the lowestmaterial costs per hour.
For Maximum PenetrationRecommend 0.75" (19 mm) thick serrated edges. Serrated edges exert moredown pressure per square inch of contact area for improved penetration infrozen or hard-packed materials. In heavy-duty applications, 1" (25 mm) by10" (254 mm) flat or 1" (25 mm) by 8" (203 mm) flat or curved serratededges may be used. In extreme conditions, serrated edges can be installedover standard 6" (152 mm) edges for extra strength.
For High Abrasion/Low Impact ApplicationsCaterpillar offers two different types of carbide edges. They are the tungstencarbide tile edges and the tungsten carbide insert edges. Both provide manytimes the wear life and lower cost per hour than standard DH-2 edges if usedas recommended, in low to medium impact, highly abrasive applicationssuch as maintenance of unpaved, sand and gravel roads. The tungsten carbide tile edges are manufactured by milling a flat on the frontof a steel cutting edge base and brazing tungsten carbide “tiles” onto the flat. They are curved for excellent penetration and are available in 2' (610 mm)and 3' (914 mm) lengths and 4.75" (121 mm) and 6.75" (171 mm) widths. The tungsten carbide insert edges are manufactured by milling a slot in thebottom of a steel cutting edge and brazing a tungsten carbide “insert” into theslot. The tungsten carbide insert edges have the carbide sandwiched in agroove between the front and rear surfaces of the edge to protect them fromimpact and therefore lend themselves to higher impact applications likesnow removal. In both types of edges, the life is extended substantially due to the wear char-acteristics of the tungsten carbide.Warranty on the carbide edges is the same as that for GraderBits, meaning thesteel edge base is covered, but not the tungsten carbide tile or insert itself.

Motor Graders
Edge WidthOn motor grader cutting edges, width translates to wear material, so as a general rule, for the longest life, use the widest edge. An 8" (203 mm) edge, for example, will giveyou 100% more available wear material and edge life than a 6" (152 mm) edge… atonly about 35% more cost. In addition, hardware usage and total downtime will be cutby 50%. To extend cost savings even farther, a 10" (254 mm) cutting edge will lastthree times longer than a 6" (152 mm) edge when used under comparable conditions.Crowning describes a normal wear pattern in which the cutting edge conforms to thematerial being graded. When extreme crowning occurs or when finishing applicationsrequire tolerances less than 1/4" (6 mm), the best value may be in selecting anarrower and thinner cutting edge. This approach reduces costs by minimizing theamount of usable iron that must be thrown away.
Edge ThicknessPenetration requirements determine how thick your edge should be. The easier mate-rial is to penetrate, the thicker the edge you should use. This simple chart illustrateshow wear material increases with thickness.
Cat moldboard and overlay end bits are made from tough, thru-hardenedDH-2 steel. Moldboard end bits protect the moldboard itself from wearand damage. Overlays provide additional wear protection and strength forboth the moldboard and the cutting edge.
Moldboard End Bits• Protects end of moldboard from wear and damage.• Recommended for all applications.
Reversible Overlays• Used with curved edges.• Protects and strengthens both moldboard and cutting edges.• Reversible design provides “second life” for greater value.
Flat Overlays• Provides same moldboard and edge protection for flat edges. Not avail -
able for 14G or 16G graders.

CAT GRADERBITS™ SYSTEM
The Cat GraderBits™ System is a motor grader ground engaging tool systemthat can offer your customers many advantages over standard cutting edges.
This system is made up of adapters that bolt up to the moldboard and indi-vidual bits that fit into the adapter.
The Cat GraderBits System has been designed primarily for maintaining andreconditioning gravel roads; including ice and snow removal. In addition, acontinuous Cat GraderBits configuration can be used on paved surfaces.
There are two major customer groups that should be targeted — mines andgovernmental bodies. Since aggregate size is often different on governmental vs.mining haul roads, each group has an adapter designed for its needs. The miningadapter has a wide gap between the Cat GraderBits to accommodate largeaggregate. Since many country roads use smaller aggregates, the gap is narroweron these adapters. Either adapter can be sold in either market providing bolt holediameters match-up. See part number information.
Features/Benefits
The Cat GraderBits System has many benefits. One of the most important is theincrease in wear life over standard, heat-treated edges. However, the Cat GraderBitsSystem costs much more than a set of standard edges. Successful selling willrequire a customer’s understanding of ALL benefits. Selling wear life as the onlyfeature will result in fewer sales.
Features Benefits✔ Serrated design ✔ Excellent penetration, conserves gravel and
increases productivity✔ Tungsten carbide wear material ✔ 6-10 times greater wear life than standard
cutting edge (10" x 1"; 254 mm x 25 mm)✔ 12-15 times greater wear life than standard cutting
edge (8" x 3/4"; 203 mm x 19 mm)✔ Large decrease in grade blade maintenance ✔ Reduced downtime✔ Smoother haulroads ✔ Longer tire and mechanical life, faster travel
speeds✔ Four Cat GraderBit widths ✔ Allows several edge configurations, including
continuous edge
Detailed Comments on Features & Benefits1. One of the benefits that can be seen immediately is the ease of penetration
compared to standard continuous edges. Using a serrated configuration, initial penetration is easier. Ridges are removed and trenches are filled in onepass. Material is allowed to pass between the Cat GraderBits which helpsconserve gravel. All of these benefits help cut costs which will maximizeprofitability.
2. Tungsten Carbide is used on the Cat GraderBits at the wear area. This is thesame material used in Cat abrasion-resistant material edges. It is an extremelyhard alloy which offers excellent wear life in ground engaging tools. CatGraderBit wear life will depend on the application. In a mining haulroadapplication, wear life should range between 6-8 times greater than heat-treated edges. On county roads, it should average 8-10 times the life. A minewill typically have larger aggregate and higher impact than a county road, thus wear life is less than a county road application.
10-14 2Q2011
3. Because of the increased wear life, blade maintenance is reduced whichhelps cut costs. Other systems which have rotating bits require main -tenance for proper operation. The Cat GraderBit System is relativelymaintenance free.
4. Proper use of this system will result in smoother haulroads. Smootherroads promote safer travel and are easier on machines and tires whichcuts repair costs. Faster travel speeds are attainable on smoother roads, which can impact cycle times for off-highway trucks and other machines.
5. Four Cat GraderBits are offered — wide, standard, penetration and sharp— ranging in tip width from 2.36" (60 mm) to 0.61" (15.5 mm). Thisallows several different edge configurations. Using the narrow gapadapter, a continuous edge can be made by using all wide bits. (This isthe only configuration recommended for asphalt applications.) Byalternating wide with any of the other bits, the gap is reduced which maybe better suited for small aggregate. Using the sharp tip alone will givethe maximum gap. The same options can be used for the wider adapter, but a continuous edge is not possible because of the wider gap betweenadapter holes.
6. Regardless of the GraderBits used, it is recommended to place wideGraderBits in the outermost slots. This helps reduce adapter wear onthese end positions.
Installation
The Cat GraderBit System installs easily without moldboard modifi cation.Adapters bolt up to the moldboard like standard edges and the CatGraderBits fit into the adapter holes and are held on with a snap ring. Asnap ring pliers is the only tool necessary for installation. The tungstencarbide portion of the Cat GraderBit should point towards the front of themachine. The system can be installed on any 12, 14 or 16 foot moldboardand can be done in less than 1.5 hours. Individual bits can be removed/installed in less than one minute.
Operation
Proper operation is very important to assure acceptable Cat GraderBit systemlife. There are five points to stress with the operators.
1. The face of the carbide tile should be perpendicular to the ground.2. Moldboard sidecast angle should be between 0-10°. 3. Penetration depth should be approximately 1-1.5" (25-38 mm) maximum.4. Operating speed should be held to 4-6 mph. In higher impact applications,
slower speeds will reduce potential for breakage.5. If machine is equipped with an accumulator, make sure it’s on when
operating GraderBit System.

ROTATING BIT SYSTEM
Description
The Cat standard rotating bit system is comprised of three or four footlong adapter boards to accommodate a 7/8" (shank) carbide-tipped bit. Theadapter boards are available in either 5/8" or 3/4" bolt hole punch. There isa heavy-duty adapter board option that accepts a 1" (shank) carbide-tippedbit. The heavy-duty boards are only available in a 3/4" bolt hole punch, and are available in a three and four foot adapter board sections. All three-foot boards use 21 bits; the four-foot boards use 28 bits.
The replaceable carbide bits rotate and self sharpen which allows for superiorwear over conventional curved or flat carbide-insert blades. The carbidetip is also engineered with flat sides that aid in bit rotation. The rotating bitalso provides improved penetration and cutting ability, which can reduce thenumber of passes required by the motor grader compared to conventionalcutting edges. The carbide bits if maintained can last as long as 5–10 setsof conventional grader blades.
The multiple uses of the rotating bit system include; reclaiming lost gravelcast to the shoulders or imbedded into the road surface, which reduces thecost of new material (gravel). The system is extremely useful in cuttingcompacted snow or ice, giving the road better traction than the smoothcutting conventional blade setup. Removing washboards or cutting potholesis another feature of this system, which substantially improves and sustainsthe condition of dirt or oiled roads.
Installation1. Remove existing cutting edges from moldboard. Clean moldboard of
all dirt.2. Bolt Cat adapter boards. Tighten bolts. Rap the bolt heads sharply with
a hammer. Torque bolts a second time.3. On level ground surface, set adapter boards perpendicular, or 90 degrees
from the level ground surface. Set magnetic protractor (ex. Mayes Level +Angle Finder) on front of adapter board surface. Rack moldboard backuntil protractor reads 70 degrees, or adapter board should be racked back20 degrees from perpendicular position.
4. Caution: If adapter angle is not set correctly, the moldboard will chatterand vibrate, and the rotating bits will not properly wear or rotate (flatten). If this occurs, readjust adapter boards to the correct operating angle.(See illustration)
Correctoperating angle
10-16 2Q2011
Motor Graders
Operation1. Insure that bits are rotating freely and the adapter boards are set in correct
operating position.2. Check rotation of bits daily. A bit not rotating will develop a flat wearing
surface on the carbide tip, and leave a channel mark on the road.3. In ice and compacted snow conditions, operate blade in “float” position
with no down pressure. Grade in low gear (3rd or less).4. If bits are not freely rotating, spray or power wash, or remove and clean
debris from bit holder bore hole. Only lubricate with WD 40 or anenvironmentally approved lubricant.
Governmental Bid Specifications for Motor Grader Edges/BitsMany governmental units periodically review their bid specifications forpurchasing motor grader cutting edges and end bits. It is important to beaware of when such reviews take place and provide recommendations.Caterpillar suggests that physical properties, rather than chemical properties, represent the most accurate guide to edge performance.
Where chemical properties are still included in governmental bid specifica tions, you will want to urge the purchasing authorities to review those specificationsagainst the following physical properties and related performance benefits.
1. Through-hardened to a minimum of Rc43 (BR 400)*Through-hardening insures a uniform wear rate and these user benefits:
• Fewer edges to buy.• Reduced downtime for removal and installation.• Less hardware expense.• Lower total labor expense.
* Serrated edges thru-hardened to minimum Rc38 (Br353).
2. Standard bolt hole sizes and spacing0.63" (16 mm) and 0.75" (19 mm) holes for No. 3 head cutting edge bolts.Standard “Highway” punching with either 6" (152 mm) or 12" (305 mm)spacing. This specification standardized both edge and hardware inventories, reducing the number of different parts required in stock.
3. Breakage guaranteeSupplier warrants that if an edge breaks during operation, it will bereplaced free of charge (with the exception of high-carbon edges). Theguarantee translates into positive benefits:
• Fewer edges purchased.• Users save money. Since the guarantee reduces the user’s risk, he can
use 8" (203 mm) wide edges instead of 6" (152 mm) wide edges in mostapplications. This means two extra inches of wear material are available.Cat Motor Grader edges meet all of these requirements.
