Motivational Interviewing in the Criminal Justice System Presenters: Leslie Barfknect, LCSW and Ernest Marshall, LCSW Training Description Implementing Motivational Interviewing (MI) within a criminal justice setting comes with a multitude of challenges. MI is one of the leading interventions being applied to criminal justice systems to enhance Responsivity in working with offenders according to the Risk, Need, Responsivity Model (Andrews & Bonta). This training will provide an overview of MI and how it works to engage offenders in the change process and collaborate with them to work toward meaningful commitment of change. Learn practical tools that are applicable at all levels of interaction within the criminal justice system (correctional officers, probation and parole, attorneys, therapists). Ethical considerations as well as what is/is not MI will be discussed. Training Objectives 1. Provide a brief summary of Motivational Interviewing (MI), including an understanding of the “spirit” and techniques. 2. Identify how MI can increase Responsivity in accordance to the Risk Needs Responsivity Model. 3. Identify, practice and apply techniques to increase engagement in working with offenders at all levels of interaction. 4. Differentiate between MI and techniques consistent with MI. 5. Identify ethical challenges and considerations with using MI and MI consistent techniques. She is currently supervising the development and delivery of a treatment program for civilly committed sexual violent persons. Leslie is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and a Certified Trainer for the International Center for Clinical Excellence (ICCE). Ernest Marshall, LCSW has worked in the non- profit and public sectors in both clinical and administrative roles since 1996. His work has focused on populations traditionally considered resistant and hard to treat including: criminal justice, substance abuse, sexual offenders and multiply diagnosed individuals. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and has been conducting training for therapists and organizations for over 15 years. Training Description Implementing Motivational Interviewing (MI) within a criminal justice setting comes with a multitude of challenges.
