United in the Eucharist and sharing Christ’s love with all, we hold sacred our commitment to Christian formation, prayer, hospitality, and service to the most vulnerable in our parish, community and world. Focus on the painting, Sebastiano Conca’s Christ in the Garden of Geth- semane, and you will be drawn across the space between the gaze of Jesus and the chalice the angel offers. Se- bastiano understands the essence of the agony in the Garden—the loneli- ness of Jesus before the bitter cup the Father extends to him via the hands of an angel. Jesus’ attitude in receiving this passion is evident in his open arms. Like the posture he will assume when nailed to the cross, he shows his humble acceptance and abandon- ment. Gardens don’t appear often in Scripture, but they are important. There is the Garden of Eden, the place of God’s creative love and man’s original sin. There is the gar- den in the Song of Songs—a garden of passion, possession, and life-giving union. Where is Jesus’ tomb, and where does Mary Magdalene, the transformed lover, find Jesus on East- er morning? In the Scriptures, gar- dens are a place of new life, sin, and redemption. It’s where lovers go; where love is declared and tested. This is important in understand- ing the drama of our Lord’s agony in the Garden. It is the drama inside of love. It is the drama of acceptance and abandonment, trust and generos- ity, life and death. Jesus knows this and goes into the Garden to do what Adam failed to do in the first Garden. He goes to pay the price of love. He engenders new life by giving his own. He looks at the chalice, the price of our salvation, and with a heart full of generous, un- complicated love, accepts the Father’s invitation. “Not my will but yours be done.” † ~Bringing Home the Word How can I receive Jesus’ self- giving love for me more deeply? Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church Father Thomas Aduri, Pastor
Conca’s Christ in the Garden of Geth-semane, and you will be drawn across the space between the gaze of Jesus and the chalice the angel offers. Se-
bastiano understands the essence of the agony in the Garden—the loneli-ness of Jesus before the bitter cup the Father extends to him via the hands of an angel.
Jesus’ attitude in receiving this passion is evident in his open arms. Like the posture he will assume when nailed to the cross, he shows his
humble acceptance and abandon-ment. Gardens don’t appear often in Scripture, but they are important. There is the Garden of Eden, the
place of God’s creative love and man’s original sin. There is the gar-
den in the Song of Songs—a garden of
passion, possession, and life-giving union. Where is Jesus’ tomb, and
where does Mary Magdalene, the
transformed lover, find Jesus on East-er morning? In the Scriptures, gar-dens are a place of new life, sin, and redemption. It’s where lovers go;
where love is declared and tested. This is important in understand-ing the drama of our Lord’s agony in the Garden. It is the drama inside of love. It is the drama of acceptance
and abandonment, trust and generos-ity, life and death.
Jesus knows this and goes into the Garden to do what Adam failed to do
in the first Garden. He goes to pay the price of love. He engenders new
life by giving his own. He looks at the chalice, the price of our salvation,
and with a heart full of generous, un-
complicated love, accepts the Father’s invitation. “Not my will but yours be
done.” † ~Bringing Home the Word
How can I receive Jesus’ self-
giving love for me more deeply?
How should I imitate Jesus’ self-giving love in my relationships?

Archbishop’s
Call to Share
Jesus shows us that the ways of God are not the
ways of men. While God’s glory does include His
power and awesomeness and majesty and might, it
also includes something else that we might find a
little surprising: the giving of Himself for another, so
that they might have life. This is why Christ’s Self-
Gift on the Cross—perhaps even more so then the
Resurrection or the Ascension—is highlighted in
John’s Gospel as the place of His Glory. And it’s why
the Cross has been called Christ’s Royal Throne
throughout Christian history.
We are called to glorify God, too. And we can’t do
better than by imitating Jesus, offering generous,
fruitful sacrifices in union with Christ. This Lenten
season is the perfect time to do so. We can take part
in many opportunities for almsgiving. We can also
contribute to our Archbishop’s Call to Share appeal,
allowing a grain of our wealth to bear much fruit in
our parish community. As we go forward this week,
let’s ask God to show us how we can glorify His
name by giving generously in imitation of Christ.
It’s easy to make your appeal gift online!
You can do so at https://mission.archkck.org
