Operation Olive Branch Next Outreach is June 25th at Holy Family

We have been visiting on the 3rd Saturday of every month since last fall and the blessings have been abundant. Going out two by two, we visit homes of parishioners we have not seen in some time. We listen to them and invite them back to church. We ask them for prayer intentions and we bring them back before the Blessed Sacrament.

Q. I am really tiring of little kids that act up during Mass. Why doesn’t Fr. Joe do something about these distractions? A. I think you should have addressed this question directly to Fr. Joe, however, since you sent this to Mail Call instead, I will be happy to give you my personal opinion.

We human beings aren’t born with the capacity to know how to act in church. We all had to learn that particular talent. Catholic parents have the duty to teach their children proper behavior during Mass which includes correcting any unacceptable behavior. How can we expect parents to teach and children to learn without real life experience?

Let’s also consider what Jesus himself said about children: (Mark 10:13-16) 13. “And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15. "Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of

God like a child will not enter it at all." 16. And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them”. Notice, Jesus was “indignant.” He said “the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

In my opinion, we should thank parents of young children for making the extra effort to bring their little ones to church. It would be easier for them to just stay home. I personally would like to see us experience a quadrupling of young children at Mass. They are not just the church of the future, according to Jesus; they are the church of today. We should see children in church as a precious gift.

Don’t forget that we adults are children too, God’s children. In His eyes, we “act up” far worse than these little ones because we know better. Our sins are deliberate acts of disobedience. Jesus said “he that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.” (John 8:7). Until we ourselves are perfect, we must forgive the imperfection in others. Our Lord also taught us to ask God to “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Who could be easier to forgive than an innocent child?

Perhaps the next time a little one calls attention to himself/herself in church, rather than seeing a “distraction” consider it a call to prayer. Say a short prayer for that child and then say one for the parents. Finally, pray for Divine help to see little ones through the eyes of Jesus. This can’t help but enrich your experience in the House of God. I know it works for me.

God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to

protect and defend our freedom.

We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day.

We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm’s way. Shield them from danger and bring them home.

Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace.

Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor!

May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us!

Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! Amen. simplecatholicliving.com
