Our regular visitors have given us some greatfeedback from our recent facelift and it ispleasing that so many have taken the time to

pass on their thoughts.Like me at home we could not decide on thecolour scheme so we got some professionaladvice. Past President Ross Pulling wasre ective on the passing of the carpet he chose back in2006 so we gave him a souvenir piece for his collection.

Recently your committee have attended a number of func-tions, this included end of season presentations for many ofour Community Groups, such as netball, football and others.Not many members see all these committee obligations thatfall under their roles and I thank my fellow committee mem-bers for their ongoing support and it is indeed pleasing tohear in how much high esteem Frankston is held.

Two events that are indeed worthy of a mention. The rstbeing the Blue Ribbon supported facility in the new Frank-ston Hospital emergency wing. This is dedicated to PoliceO cer Edward Keith Simmons who lost his life on ChristmasEve in 1957 whilst on duty at Olivers Hill at the age of 33.

Prior to joining the Police Force Edward served with the Roy-al Australian Navy and then as a Frankston taxi driver. His son a Frankston RSL memberspoke fondly of his late father and inparticular the support from Legacy

given to the family. Frankston has been a strongsupporter of the Blue RibbonFoundation and members DarylNation and wife Rhonda spend manyhours in their roles with Blue Ribbon.

Secondly, early in October Frankstonhosted the now Annual Police Commemorative Servicewhich honours all 157 o cers who have paid the ultimateprice in their line of duty of their 160 year history. The servicewas well attended by Victoria Police members and both

Federal, State and local politicians.

Elsewhere in this edition you will read a report from ourhardworking Memorabilia working group. Their most recentdisplay is of particular signi cance and I welcome your feed-back.

As we count down to the Christmas season we are all bracingfor a turkey overload and the hope of a few days with thefamily. I would like to express my deep and heartfelt thanksto sta , committee and members for their support and pat-ronage during the year.

On that note, I close o and wish all the best for the fes ve

season and what awaits us in 2014 as we count down to theCentenary of the start of The Great War with planning welladvanced.

Many of us can cast our minds back to times at PrimarySchool when one day in November we had a bigassembly, the Principal spoke a few words, played some

bugle music. We tried hard to stay quiet for a minute andthen back to play and the class room. Little did most of usfully understand the signi cance of what we were doing.In the fties and sixties Australian History let alone ourMilitary History was not on the curriculum.

Funny how times and perceptions have changed as wenow engage strongly with the students of today in a waythat simply was not there when most of us were at school.

One thing that stands out in recent times is that of thewords of Canadian singer and songwriter Terry Kelly whoon November 11 1999 was in a store in Nova Scotia whenat 11 oclock all but one patron paused in remembrance.This experience he then put into words in a powerful songcalled A Pittance of Time that recalls so strongly why wepause.

Two lines stand out; In peace may they rest

May we never forget, why they died So why do we remember? The simple answer is so we donot forget, especially the 100,000 Australians who paid theultimate price from WW1 to Afghanistan, and today arestill away from their families across the globe.

Its just fantastic for us as a Club to be supported by ourMembers each year when it comes to our VSK night. Andonce again we where not disappointed with a fantasticturn up on the night and everyone digging deep. We aredelighted to announce we raised a whooping $5500. Thismoney will of course go along way in supporting familieswith very sick or terminally ill children.

Very Special Kids

This year our annual assistance for Connecting Skills wenttowards some gardening tools that they were in need of.We were delighted to be able purchase for them 3 x BrushCutter Saws, 3 Pole Saws & 3 x Hedge Trimmers, seen herepictured left. You may have noticed the RSL gardens havebeen looking very vibrant of late with many new shrubs andnatives being planted. This is all thanks to the hard work ofthe Connecting Skills Team who are out each and everyweek working replanting, mulching, weeding and mowinglawns.

City Life is an organisation in Frankston where many of theneedy go to receive food assistance. It is a place wherepeople can come and receive a hot nutritious meal, and sitand talk with others. They supply over 9000 meals eachmonth to the needy.

This Christmas we are supporting City Life to feed families inneed by running a can drive. We are asking our Members,Sta , Committee to help us in this quest by dropping o TinFood donations to the club. The preferred cans are; Spaghet-ti, Baked Beans, Canned Fruit , Canned Vegies and ChunkySoups. The can drive will be running right through Novemberand the beginning of December, cash donations will also beaccepted at Reception.

Another great opportunity City Life provide is trainingcourses for clients, local schools and the broader community.They have on site facilities which provide a safe place inwhich training can be delivered in an environment thatfosters innovative integrated learning and personaldevelopment. Of course to do this they need the rightequipment and this year we will be assisting them bypurchasing 10 brand new Notebookswith all the speci cations and softwareneeded for these courses. Thisassistance will create opportunities fortheir students to succeed in theircourse, which in turn will help themsucceed in gaining employment.

Those Friday night regulars are aware of our weeklyCommunity Ra es and some even see our Presentations toour Community Partners but few are aware of the depth ofour support. Since 2006 Frankston RSL has donated in excess of $1million dollars from our Community Support Program. Thisis in real cash terms and simply not in kind support thatwe provide to many of our Ex -Service Organizations (ESO)and groups such as Army and Air Force cadet units. Early in October we received an urgent request from the

Frankston SES to assist with the purchase of two Chainsawswhich are regularly used for tree removal, as this had beenone of their busiest times with the recent high winds in andaround Frankston. Frankston SES is a Volunteer based group who receive someGovernment support but in the most rely heavily on publicdonations and with an average of 1,100 calls per year inaddition to theirnormal jobs we wereeager to support them. On behalf of the RSL,President Brent

presented a cheque for$2,600.00 which willcover the full cost oftwo urgently neededchain saws which was received by Brian and Hennie.

3rd Quarter Sta Awards

AIR CONDITIONINGOver the journey of our development one of the areasthat has su ered is the air conditioning. Unfortunatelysome of the units werent changed and now are start-ing to su er wear & tear. The Committee has been ad-dressing this by the way of repairs but time is catchingup with the units so we are currently talking with oursuppliers about options for new units. This is an expen-sive exercise but progress is being made and we hopeto commence late 2013 or early 2014.

CRACKED PEPPER BOOKINGSThere has been some feedback regarding the bookingprocess in Cracked Pepper and by now most know thesystem. We only take bookings for 8 people or more.With its increased popularity, particularly Friday andSaturday evenings, it has become increasingly hard toseat everyone at particular times.The current process is in place to allow some exibilityfor patrons to be able to get a meal at their desiredtime. Our team is working with Members and Guestsduring these busy periods to endeavour to seat asmany as possible. We do not want to turn anyone awaybut will continue to achieve the best possible outcomefor everybody.

This year the Frankston District Sub Branch of the VVAA hashad a signi cant increase in membership. We believe thatthis is due not only to our active social activities but to our

partners being full members of our group. Our socialoutings have been a great success which can be seen by theincrease of numbers attending these activities.Our Service on Vietnam Veterans Day was well attended andour guest speakers were from Pearcedale Primary Schoolspoke very well. We also used the deaf signing choir fromthe School. This brought a tear into most of the audienceseyes. We recently had a sausage sizzle at Bunnings with allproceeds going into our welfare account so that we canhelp our Veterans or their families who are in trouble. Overthe past few months we have been active in helpinganother Veteran move into RSL Park with some furniture heneeded desperately. As this will be the last edition of Morse -Code beforeChristmas, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmasand a safe and prosperous New Year.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On Friday 16th August 2013, after some subterfuge thatincluded members of State Branch, I accompanied MrsCheryl Myers and her husband Les, to the Annualobservance of Vietnam Veterans Day conducted at theHeidelberg Repatriation Hospital. This service was followedby the presentation of the 6th Annual Leslie Farren Awardfor Region 1 of the RSL. The award was presented by theRSL State Vice President Mr George Logan RFD and wasawarded to a very surprised Cheryl Myers, SecretaryFrankston District Sub Branch.

Cheryl not only does an outstanding job as Sub BranchSecretary and State Council Delegate, but also as a WelfareO cer where she has faced several challenging cases andthere are local members who are indebted to to her caringattitude to this task.

Cheryl is also a willing Social Assistant within the FDVVAASub Branch, where she assists with the organisation offunctions and trips in liaison with the Naval Association and

other groups within our community.Cheryl is amember of theFrankstonBranch of thePartners ofVeterans, whereshe has servedon the executiveCommittee asPresident.

Cheryl is alsovery active eachweek with theFrankston RSL as the minibus driver for day trips for theWidows Associations and TPI Groups, she is also a memberof the Frankston RSL memorabilia committee.

Vietnam Veterans

With Christmas nearly upon us our ladies will be busyorganising the Christmas Hampers which will be on displayin the club very soon for everyone to support.

September kept us busy as we were invited along to theMayors Picnic, (sharing a tent with the YVC), to set up ourtrade table. It was a delightful day and a great opportunityfor us to extend ourselves outside the RSL. Then later in themonth we hosted our Area Meeting which saw over 80 la-dies from Sister Auxiliaries attend. We were honoured atthis meeting to be able to award Pam Merlo and KayeRuitenbeek with their Life Memberships for all the fantasticwork they have done over many years.Remembrance Day will be just about upon us when youread this article and we will be paying our respects by layingwreaths at both ceremonies held by the RSL.

We would also like to thank the Frankston RSL FootyTipping Members for two donations we received from themthis year.Our monthly meetings have been well attended and arealways informative. Over the last couple of months we havehad guest speakers come and address our ladies from acouple of organisations. In particular the Vic Police repre-sentative that gave our ladies valuable information andadvice on getting older and living alone.We take this opportunity to thank you all for your supportthrough 2013 and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and aSafe and Happy New Year. AUSTRALIAS FIRST WAR- THE ANGLO BOER WAR (October 1899 to May 1902) At the time of Federation, in January 1901, Australia was atwar! All six of the Australian colonies had sent contingentsof troops to the war in South Africa. From 1901 these Aus-tralian troops answering Great Britains call were represent-ing the new Commonwealth of Australia. Australian soldiers fought alongside British and other BritishEmpire forces against the Dutch Afrikaner settlers (the Bo-er). Whilst military records are not accurate it is generallybelieved that 16,000 Australians volunteered to ght, includ-ing 60 nurses attached to the contingents. Australian losses were high, 282 were killed in action or diedfrom wounds, 286 died from illness and 38 died from acci-dents and other causes. The rst Australian woman to die inwar was recorded with the death of volunteer nurse FrancisHines. The Boer War is the theme for our latest commemorativedisplay. We are privileged to have a very rare collection oforiginal Boer War memorabilia made available to us for thenext few months (some items on display are over 110 years

old). Why dont you take the opportunity to study and enjoythe display which will be in the club til the end ofDecember? We are extremely fortunate to have this oppor-tunity and, on behalf of all members and visitors, thank theMorgan Family for the generous loan of their collection.

BILLIARDS & SNOOKERBilliards is the game of the momentat this time of year and we haveplenty of teams and competitionsrunning. Our Tuesday Southernteam is going great guns and sitsatop the ladder after 8 rounds, andour players feature heavily in the

top break and games won catego-ries.In the Thursday RSL competition,Ron Stecums and Pat Chungsteams are both doing very nicelythankyou after 12 rounds, thoughthey have both just slipped out of

GOLF The 2013 golf season is rapidlycoming to an end with only 5games to play including our nalsof the club championship and ourannual challenge match against theWOSSM at HMAS Cerberus. Hope-fully we can regain the trophy andalso win the Darts competition. Our annual challenge matchagainst East Malvern RSL at Trafal-gar golf club resulted in us regain-ing the trophy by the narrowest ofmargins. Congratulations to all thatparticipated from both clubs forcreating a great day. Congratulations and bestwishes to all nalists formaking the nals of the club cham-

pionship. Our 4BBB competition for the EricKing trophy was held at PortseaGolf Club on 6th October. In a close-ly fought competition congratula-tions to Shane Scott -Smith, PaulHoward, Tony and Lesley Shead fordefending their title they won lastyear. Its tough to win back to backtitles so well done to all the teamand those that competed to makeit a great competition. I wish to thank all members of thecommittee for their tireless contri-butions during a very successful

season.

nals in a couple of weeks. It wasfantastic to see Bill McCreath &Kevin Frost the recipients of theMPDL Doubles Trophy again. Theyhave the track record now ofwinning it 4 times in 6 years, what atremendous e ort by both of them.Some of the highlights over 2013where 180s thrown by GeorgeShakeshaft, Charlie Fortnam, BobMayer, Charlie Collins & Kevin Frost.The highest nish wasAldo Lastella136 &Terry Da -107.

BOWLSMembership We currently have 169 membersand we will welcome anyone whowould like to join. No experiencenecessary as we provide freecoaching. Opening Day We had a great day on 31 Augustwith the o cial opening of the2013/14 season, with the formalproceedings being performed byour Sub -Branch President, BrentClyne, including rolling the rstbowl. The good weather, the great con-dition of our grass green (thanksto Daniel, our green keeper) andthe well -attended working bee

prior to the day meant the sur-rounds were in pristine condition.All members had an enjoyable dayof bowls, which was followed by aBBQ. Pennant Bowls This season we are playing in bothMidweek and Saturday Pennantcompetition. We have one LadiesOnly and three Mixed teams com-peting Midweek and ve Mixedteams competing on Saturday.The season commenced on 1 Octo-ber for Midweek competition and5 October for the Saturday compe-

tition.

Social Bowls This takes place on Tuesdays andSaturdays on our synthetic greenand on Thursdays on both thesynthetic and grass greens. Barefoot Bowls We already have a number ofbookings for Corporate BarefootBowls Parties to date there areeight bookings for some 260 play-ers. Also, Friday night social bare-foot bowls is now underway.If interested then please contactLinda Milton on 9781 3768.

INDOOR BOWLSHere we are again, another yearhas gone by very quicklyand Christmas is just around thecorner. The Year 2013 has been a goodyear for us Indoor Bowlers, ourteams have won both summerand winter pennant, and I amsure we all congratulate them ona great e ort. In September we went to seeKing Kong a great show and Iam sure it was enjoyed by all. Summer Pennant has just startedup again and we have threeteams, Frankston Meercats,Frankston Fillies and R.S.L Parkwe wish them all the best for theseason. A good crowd attended to watchboth games and to recognise otherachievements through the year. TheClub billiards championships are nowunderway.

PIPES & DRUMS Springtime heralds the start of ourpublic activities. We played at theopening of the Bowls Season and atSomers Primary School Arts Feteand the Frankston Ladies Choirconcert at the Robert BlackwoodHall at Monash University, Frank-ston. We will be playing at Remem-brance Day Service at FrankstonCemetery on 10 th November andthen have Daylesford HighlandGathering on 7th December. In the lead up to our summer sea-son of engagements and competi-tions we had a Band Camp over theweekend of 12/13 October. This gaveus hard practice with some relaxedbonding time. This gave us concen-trated practice that is extremelyvaluable in our pursuit of a goodplaying standard which is largelyachieved through really tight team-work.This year we have su ered a num-ber of losses to our playing strengththrough serious illness. Our num-bers are now depleted and wewould welcome experienced pipersand drummers. We are always inneed of young learners and cano er expert tuition and a introduc-tion to a lifelong pastime that is alot of fun as well as ful lling andexciting .

Welfare Report

YVC o site activities and excursions On Sunday 15th September RSL Park veterans held abarbeque for younger veterans. This was attended byTracey Locke and the Coordinator.

YVC Ra e With 2 major prizes of an HRT signed and framed printcerti ed by Price Waterhouse and a remote control heli-copter donated by Sabes Hobby House and a $100 ColesMyer gift voucher a ra e to raise funds, so please sup-port this one.

In September we welcomed representatives from the Depart-ment of Veterans A airs (DVA) David Cunningham, Directorand Dave Saunders, Assistant Director and our local VANO cer Ian Johnson. They were most impressed with our facil-ity and thanks to Vice President John and Kerry for their sup-port on the day.

Community and Public Relations On Sunday 8th September the YVC had a marquee andmarket stall at the Mayors Picnic (George Pentland Gardens).Tony and Brent assembled and disassembled the marqueeand transported it with the tables and chairs etc.The WomensAuxiliary participatedwith goods for saleand attended all day.

Tracey Locke (a newCrew Member) alsoattended all day andwas active inpromoting the Centrehanding out Poppiesand YVC brochures.

Programs and activities At least 95 participants have attended the Dave Sabben talksand each week a photo of the door prize winner has beenposted on the YVC facebookpage. In October wewelcomed WO 2 Ric Jackson(pictured right) to the Centre ashe re ected on his 27 years withthe ADF and in particular toursof both Iraq and Afghanistan.Rics wife Madison and Kerry(also pictured) are thanked fortheir drive and support ingiving Ric the encouragementto make this signi cant moveand only those in the know willunderstand.

Music Members of the Peninsula Folk Club have been regularly at-tending the Tuesday music group to assist and support veter-ans. A short clip of the music group was posted on the YVCfacebook and they performed several songs before an audi-ence for the Dave Sabben talk on 24 September. We wereindeed privileged that Dave (and wife Di) took such time tosupport us over 10 Tuesdays.

SAFEtalk Program In discussions with the Veterans & Veterans Families Counsel-

ling Service (VVCS) it is proposed to hold a half day course onsuicide awareness and prevention before the end of the year.This is as a follow up to R U OK Day in September. Anyonewho is interested or wishes more information please call Ker-ry on 9783 4151 as we require a minimum of eight to run theprogram and eligibility criteria applies.

As always our Welfare Volunteers have been hard atwork with their growing workload of hospital and agedcare facility visitations. In addition to our also increasingluncheon visitors Dick and his team have been on theirtoes.

Again the Ex Service Women have been enjoying theirmonthly outings thanks to Cheryl with trips and theirquarterly luncheons and now preparing for Christmas.

During September wehosted a special event forone of our Servicemembers 100 th Birthday.Arthur JohnnySaunders was born inSa ron Walden in the UKon September 15 1913 andserved with theAustralian forces after hisarrival in Australia. InJune we wereapproached by hisPhysician and over two months we were able to arrangea surprise party with nearly 45 of his close friends andfamily and a great cake from our local baker. Even at his ripe age Johnny a long -time resident at RSLPark is as sharp as a tack and it was so rewarding to as-sist with the traditional letters along with those from theRSL State and National Presidents.Our thanks and that of the family to the Bistro sta whomade the day go so smoothly and we also presentedJohnny with an ANZAC scarf.

Welfare O cer Tony has also been busy at both the RSLand our Veterans Centre now with his new collection ofmobility aids thanks to a kind donation that will enable usto o er assistance to many more of our clients. If anyreader has surplus mobility aids please give Tony a calland we can arrange for collection.

In October we again supported the Veterans HealthWeek program with presentations and information ses-sions at the Veterans Centre with the assistance of ourAge Strong service provider PACE.
