TODAY’S GOSPEL READING Այսօրվա Ավետարանը Matthew 24:30-36
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they
will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the
other. 32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that
summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly I tell
you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass
away, but my words will not pass away. 36 “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the
angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Holy Communion In the Armenian Church Holy Communion is distributed in the
following manner. The communicant stands before the priest, makes the sign of the cross and says:
“Megha Asdoodzo”, "I have sinned against God."
The priest then places a small particle of our Lord's Body and Blood -- the bread having been dipped into the wine -- directly into the mouth
of the communicant. The communicant again makes the sign of the Cross and steps aside for others to approach the blessed sacrament.
After all have received Holy Communion, using the chalice to imprint the sign of the Cross over the communicants, the priest imparts the
blessing of Psalm 28:9 : "Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; shepherd them and lift them up from henceforth until
eternity".

Basic Rules and Manners in the Armenian Apostolic Church
General Manners in Church: An attitude of reverence and respect forms
the foundation of our church manners. Concentration on the ceremony should be our main concern. Therefore, heads turned to look for friends, and other
similar distractive motions are bad manners in church. Other general rules are as follows:
Dress in modest and appropriate clothing. Think of how you would want to look if you were standing in front of God Himself.
No gum chewing or eating of any kind Do not cross your legs while sitting. It is a sign of “casualness” that is
considered irreverant Do not stretch or place arms on pews or across the backs of pews.
Do not walk from the middle aisle.
Participation: Always keep in mind you are not a spectator, but a participant in the church services. Upon entering the church take a liturgy
book, turn to the specified page and follow the services. This way you will be able to follow the actual Liturgy and understand the meaning of it. Our
church utilizes an electrical device on the wall above the choir to depict the appropriate pages for the service.
The Liturgy Book will also instruct you as to the proper time to sit, stand or kneel during the service. You are encouraged to sing along with the choir but
do not sing, however, with the officiating Priest and the person serving as Deacon at the Altar.
Leaving Church: Your departure from church should be as reverent and as orderly as your entrance. When the service is over, the
congregation should come forward, kiss the Gospel and receive Der Hayr’s personal blessings. Greeting others, shaking hands and having
conversations should wait until you are out of the church proper

Interest in Art
Varsine Mkrtchyan, 9, dreams of becoming an artist like
her dad who had a talent for painting. “Every painting
that I do reminds me of my father. This way, I always feel
him around me,” said Varsine, whose father, Ara, died in a
car accident. Varsine’s mother, Varya, works as a stylist
and weaves rugs. The family’s meager monthly income is
$250. Since being accepted into FAR’s Children of
Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP), which provides her
family with an annual stipend, Varsine has been able to
take a vacation with her mother and buy new drawing
supplies. “We can make a living, however without this
support, I would have never been able to provide my kid
with a vacation. During our trip, I really saw that Varsine
felt freer and more able to socialize with other children her
age. Thank you so much for the support,” said Varya.
Weekly Wisdom
To the Victor Goes the Crown The crowning is the central symbol and ritual of the entire sacrament
of marriage in all of its several rituals. In fact, the sacrament in the
Armenian Church for marriage is not “matrimony,” but “The rite of a
Maiden’s Crown.” In Armenian, «Կանոն Պսակ Օրհնելու:» Why the
emphasis on the crowning? It’s the triumph of Jesus Christ, the victory
of the Cross! One of the required roles in the wedding ceremony of the
Armenian Church is not a “best man,” but a “Godfather of the Cross”
or խաչեղբայր. The image is clear. The խաչեղբայր stands behind the
bride and groom holding a cross that hovers over them. It’s the sign of
God’s infinite, unconditional, sacrificial love, a sign to give oneself
fully to the other person.
In the Church, martyrs are also said to be crowned. Why? They are
living witnesses of the victory of Christ. The crown of thorns that Jesus
wore as he hung on the Cross was meant to serve as a mockery of the
crown, but for Christians, it came to represent life in the Kingdom of
God: victory over sin, suffering, and death. Surprising as this may
seem, rather than romantic love, the tradition of Christian marriage
belongs to the genre of martyrdom. In fact, this is the opposite of how
marriage is commonly perceived. Rather than a fantastical cure to the
boredom or illness of being single, marital union matches what Jesus
demonstrated on the Cross: self-consecration, self-sacrifice, suffering,
and martyrdom. The things we value in marriage are what Jesus
embodied in his ministry and on the Cross, and it is the qualities of a
martyr from which Christian marriage derives its strength and glory:
