LISBON — The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Wall Memorial thatstands in Washington, D.C. will be on display at the Columbiana County Fairgroundsbeginning at 6 p.m. Thursday and will remain through 8:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15.

In honor of this, the Columbiana County Commissioners have also proclaimed thatweekend as Vietnam Veterans Weekend in Columbiana County.

Once assembled, the Wall will be available for viewing 24 hours a day. Assembly willbegin at 9:45 a.m. Thursday and tear down will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The MovingWall has been on display across the country for nearly 30 years. The Wall's travelthrough the county will begin at 8:15 a.m. Thursday with a motorcycle escort from theDutch Village Inn in Columbiana to state Route 344 into Leetonia. Once in Leetonia, the

convoy will travel past the library and village schools before turning onto state Route 14in Washingtonville. Then it will travel along Route 14 into Salem. The convoy will turnonto the Route 45/62 bypass toward the state Route 45 intersection and will then travelsouth on Route 45 toward Lisbon.

Along with the motorcycle escort, the Wall will weave its way through Lisbon, travel-ing down Beaver Street to Lincoln Way before turning onto Market Street toward thefairgrounds main entrance.

Prior to the opening ceremonies on Friday, area students will visit The Wall and meetwith Vietnam veterans. Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the colors pre-sented by the Salem Amvets Honor Guard. Commissioner Tim Weigle will skydive intothe fairgrounds at 6:45 p.m. Following Commissioner Weigle’s landing there will be abagpiper and words from Commissioner Mike Halleck and State Rep. Nick Barborak, D-Lisbon.

A rose laying ceremony is also planned during the opening ceremonies. During theceremony names of all fallen soldiers from Columbiana and Mahoning counties will beread by Dr. Connie Robinson of Youngstown State University and Sharen Cope of thefair board. As the soldier’s name is read, family members or a member of the militarywill place a rose at the base of the panel where the soldier’s name is etched. Any familymember or friend wishing to take part in the rose laying ceremony should contact Copeat 330-222-1914.

A POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday with wordsfrom Tim Ginter. On Sunday, members of the Columbiana County Fair Board, SalemVFW and Salem Amvets will host a recognition ceremony for all county veterans begin-ning at 1 p.m. Although the ceremony will honor all county veterans, it will pay specialattention to those who served during Vietnam.

Following remarks from U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta; state Sen. Joseph Schi-avoni, D-Boardman; and Rep. Barborak, there will be a quilt presentation to area Viet-nam veterans at 1:45 p.m. The quilts were created as part of the 2014 Columbiana Coun-ty Fair’s “Vietnam Veterans: You Are Not Forgotten” special category.

A pot luck dinner, by reservation only, will follow the presentation.

Closing ceremonies by John Brown III, Amvets past national commander will takeplace at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Throughout the weekend members of The Marlboro Volunteers will have a historicaldisplay of military vehicles as well as other military memorabilia. The Marlboro Volun-teers Inc., is a charitable non-profit organization as well as a U.S. Military History andEducational Organization. Members bring to life soldiers from the French and IndianWar to the present for those who stroll through their displays.

Three highways in Columbiana Countyhave been named for soldiers who werekilled in action in Vietnam.

On June 6, 2004, a 5.3-mile stretch ofstate Route 7 was named the Melvin E.Newlin Memorial Highway, in honor of

Wellsville native and Congressional Medalof Honor recipient Melvin Newlin.

Newlin’s Medal of Honor was awardedposthumously and presented to his familyby President Richard M. Nixon.

His medal’s citation reads:“For conspicuous gallantry and intre-

pidity at the risk of his life above andbeyond the call of duty while serving as amachine gunner attached to the First Pla-toon, Company F, Second Battalion, FifthMarines, First Marine Division, in theRepublic of Vietnam on 3 and 4 July 1967.Private Newlin with four other Marines, was manning a key position on the perime-ter of the Nong Son outpost when the ene-my launched a savage and well coordinat-ed mortar and infantry assault, seriouslywounding him and killing his four com-rades.

Propping himself against his machinegun, he poured a deadly accurate stream

of fire into the charging ranks of the VietCong.

Though repeatedly hit by small armsfire, he twice repelled enemy attempts tooverrun his position. During the thirdattempt, a grenade explosion woundedhim again and knocked him to the groundunconscious.

The Viet Cong guerrillas, believing himdead, bypassed him and continued theirassault on the main force.

Meanwhile, Private Newlin regainedconsciousness, crawled back to hisweapon, and brought it to bear on the rearof the enemy causing havoc and confusionamong them. Spotting the enemy attempt-ing to bring a captured 106 recoillessweapon to bear on other Marine positions,he shifted his fire, inflicting heavy casual-ties on the enemy and preventing themfrom firing the captured weapon.

He then shifted his fire back to the pri-mary enemy force, causing the enemy tostop their assault on the Marine bunkersand to once again attack his machine gunposition. Valiantly fighting off two moreenemy assaults, he firmly held his grounduntil mortally wounded.

Private Newlin had single-handedlybroken up and disorganized the entireenemy assault force, causing them to losemomentum and delaying them longenough for his fellow Marines to organizea defense and beat off their secondary

attack. His indomitable courage, fortitude, and unwavering devotion to duty in theface of almost certain death reflected greatcredit upon himself and the Marine Corpsand upheld the highest traditions of theUnited States Naval Service.”

On May 23, 2007, a portion of stateRoute 344 near Leetonia was named thePfc Ralph Dias Memorial Highway in hon-or of former Leetonia resident and Con-gressional Medal of Honor recipient RalphDias.

Dias, a native of Pennsylvania who hadresided in Leetonia and is buried in Leeto-nia’s Oakdale Cemetery was awarded themedal posthumously by President Nixon.

Dias’ medal citation reads:“For conspicuous gallantry and intre-

pidity at the risk of his life above andbeyond the call of duty, while serving as aRifleman with Company D, First Battalion,Seventh Marines, First Marine Division inthe Republic of Vietnam on November 12,1969.

As a member of a reaction force whichwas pinned down by enemy fire whileassisting a platoon in the same circum-stance, Private First Class Dias, observingthat both units were sustaining casualties, initiated an aggressive assault against anenemy machine gun bunker which wasthe principal source of hostile fire.

Severely wounded by enemy sniperswhile charging across the open area, hepulled himself to the shelter of a nearbyrock. Braving enemy fire for a secondtime, Private First Class Dias was againwounded.

Unable to walk, he crawled fifteenmeters to the protection of a rock locatednear his objective and, repeatedly expos-ing himself to intense hostile fire, unsuc-cessfully threw several hand grenades atthe machine gun emplacement. Still deter-mined to destroy the emplacement, Pri-vate First Class Dias again moved into theopen and was wounded a third time bysniper fire.

As he threw a last grenade whichdestroyed the enemy position, he wasmortally wounded by another enemyround. Private First Class Dias’

indomitable courage, dynamic initiative, and selfless devotion to duty upheld thehighest traditions of theMarine Corps andthe United States Naval Service. He gal-lantly gave his life in service to his coun-try.”

Then, in June 2014, a portion of stateRoute 45 between the Wellsville villagelimits and Yellow Creek Township wasnamed the Corporal Ernest G. MaddenMemorial Highway in honor of Wellsvillenative ErnestMadden.

Madden was serving as a fire teamleader with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5thMarines, 1st Marine Division, when hiscompany was attacked while crossing arice field inside enemy territory.

With his group badly outnumberedand sustaining crippling casualties, Mad-den pressed on through 200 yards ofheavy gunfire, mortar fire and grenadeblasts to set up a firing position. Despitethe sustained danger, he moved about thearea, directing and encouraging his men, until he was fatally wounded.

For his actions, Madden was posthu-mously awarded the Silver Star by Presi-dent Lyndon Johnson.
