Spurlock’s Methods

• Spurlock used shock tactics to allow the public to see the horrible effects of eating fast food in large quantities.

• His motive was to expose and express to the public the immediate affects of consuming McDonalds products and the affect this is having on the health of the public.

• Spurlock uses very reflexive methods in his documentaries and during Supersize Me in particular he went to the extreme, using himself as a human guinea pig.

The Effects• Morgan experienced

drastic health issues in direct relation to the food intake and diet consisting of nothing but McDonalds.

• Although his life was in danger Spurlock strived to complete his task to provide many Americans and other viewers the pain he experienced eating the food loved by so many.

Supersize Me • Supersize me was written and

directed by Morgan Spurlock, Morgan not only wanted to expose the obvious body issues that are experienced but also the mental stress and trauma that consuming such modified foods can have on your body.

• Spurlock’s challenge was to eat nothing but McDonald’s products 3 times a day for a full month. This choice of such a radical task was to document and expose the real nature of the fast food mass industry and the ways in which their food is both addictive and terribly unhealthy in their content.

sUPERsIZE Me

• Spurlock’s documentary had a very clear rhythm to it. Morgan begins his research and experiment on a high as he is at peak physical condition he began trying and testing his first menu choices, this then effected the way the middle section of the documentary was made where his body begins to reject the diet and as tests show that his body has become extremely unhealthy and sick in a matter of weeks and it was unheard of that the damage to his liver would have the same effect of going on an alcohol binge for weeks.

• The doctors change their view of this diet to one that is very serious due to the dangerous test result levels his internals were displaying, this indicates that Morgan is extremely dedicated to portraying a message.

• With this sad and daunting part of the documentary Morgan is using a method that would appeal to emotion as he knows there are people out there suffering from those problems after abusing their bodies.

• Morgan used semi structured interviews in this documentary to build up a relationship with the people he was interviewing about their seemingly unfixable lifestyles.

• Although Morgan also used a stern and authoritative stance on those supporting and providing the food knowing that it is targeting children.

• I admire this about Spurlock’s documentary as it not only attempts to expose McDonalds but also all corporate fast food and generally bad products for you.

The Health Concerns

• Morgan suffered a number of mental and physical issues caused by this 30day diet that range from headaches to possible heart palpitations and liver failure.

• Morgan’s style of documentary mainly has him in the spotlight and so during this particular documentary he puts himself in the spotlight in a reflexive method used to expose.
