PRODUCE & PLANTS STALL
This year at the Moreland Primary School Fete we will have a
produce and plants stall, and we would love your help to stock it
with home grown fruit, veggies and herbs. Here
are some ways you can help.
If you have (or know friends, grandparents, etc who have) an
overflowing fruit tree, or an abundance of home grown produce,
collect a bag full to donate in November.
Alternatively, how about planting some seedlings to harvest and
donate at fete time. Plant some for yourself and some for the
fete.
Some suggestions for produce that should be ready for picking in
November are lemons, limes, asparagus, beans, beetroot, carrots,
leek, lettuce, spinach, Asian greens,
silverbeet, kale, leek, peas, beans, capsicum, cabbage,
zucchini, parsley, basil, dill, coriander, mint, sage, oregano,
rosemary, chives, kaffir lime leaves, rhubarb and more!
If you are able to donate any plants we would also love to hear
from you.
In the week of the fete, a drop off point will be arranged at
school.
If you think you will be able to either collect or grow any
fresh produce or plants, no matter how small the donation, please
let Meg know. Also if you have any questions or
suggestions, please contact Meg Thompson
[email protected]. Thank you!

CURRICULUM CORNER NAPLAN Recently students in Year 3 and 5
received their NAPLAN results from the tests they had done earlier
in the year. Here is some info for you to provide some context.
What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is one way schools and the government use to determine
where students are at in literacy and numeracy. They provide
schools with information about how education programs are working
and what areas need to be improved. What is tested and how? NAPLAN
tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to
progress through school and life, such as reading, writing,
spelling, grammar and numeracy. The writing task requires students
to write a text in response to a prompt.
Two students wrote reflections on their NAPLAN experience:
Nicanor, Grade 3
I like NAPLAN because of some very persuasive reasons so
persuasive that if you did not like NAPLAN it will change your mind
instantly. Firstly, you're going to do it even if you like it or
not in grades 3,5,7 and 9 but not grade 11 because you're doing
exams and trying to get to university. Secondly, it helps the
teachers know where you are up to so the work they give you is not
too easy, so you learn new stuff, and so it's not too hard to
understand. Thirdly, you can study before you do NAPLAN for
practice. Fourthly, the first time you do NAPLAN in grade 3 you are
not used to it but in grade 5, 7 and 9 you are used to it. Fifthly,
you have to use a special pencil and rubber so the scanner can read
it so it knows if you get it right. It knows that you have got the
right answer so it gives you the right mark or score so the
teachers know how smart you are.
In conclusion, the feelings in grade 3 the first time you do it
you feel nervous, very nervous, because you are not use to it. At
the same time, because you have studied a lot on NAPLAN and how to
answer the questions and how to keep confident, and where to sit so
no body copies you, it will not be too bad.
Good or bad, the score or mark do not matter because it’s all
about the fun. But because there’s nobody to help us so you better
try really, really hard.
Shant, Grade 3
This was my first year doing NAPLAN. In NAPLAN my favourite
thing was maths because I really like math and it was challenging.
In reading there were 4 different types of stories, we had to read
and answer questions about them. When you sit NAPLAN you need a
special pencil and you need to colour in a circle for the answer
and stay in the circle lines. You answer the questions in a special
NAPLAN test booklet with your name on it. You do NAPLAN in grades
3, 5, 7 and 9.
Some advice for grade two children. You need to get ready for
hard tests and be confident. When you do NAPLAN the scores don’t
matter but always try your best. The government will see what you
have done so they can rate this good school really well. You only
get one hour to do one test that’s why you need to stay focused.
Don’t forget to have fun.
MUSIC Extra-curricular music Did you know the kids can learn all
kinds of instruments at school? Octopus Music has been providing
extra-curricular lessons in guitar and keyboard since 2008 at
Moreland. The number of students and the variety of instruments
that are available continue to grow. The kids attend lessons on a
regular basis during class time and can have solo, pair or group
lessons in guitar, keyboard, drums, violin, and voice as well as
ukulele. ‘In music we learn loads of cool things, my personal
favourite thing is the electric piano. You can be so capable at
music if you just open your eyes. The teachers are so nice’ –
Phaedrus Grade 4
