By using modules, all components that generate heat losses are integrated in a singlemodule. Only the logic components, which induce low power dissipation, remain to beintegrated on the printed circuit board facilitating the control of the entire system. It isextremely important that all heat emitting components are coupled directly to the sys-tem heat sink, in particular for applications without fan or applications with completelyencapsulated housing. The temperature sensor, integrated in all modules, measuresthe current temperature of the module allowing to pinpoint a possible temperature rise,thus preventing sudden system breakdowns.
What Kind of Modules can Tyco Electronics offer?
All modules follow the unique “flow through” concept for easy integration into yoursystem with voltage blocks for functional routing. Four main blocks are identified:Negative voltage, input and BRC on one side; positive voltage, output and high sidegates on the opposite side.
Standard PIMs distinguish themselves through an intense power density and a highlevel of integration, most suitable for low power frequency converters. Tyco ElectronicsPIMs are available in three different housings covering a power range from 5A to 70Aat 600V and 5A to 75A at 1200V. All PIMs come with an input rectifier, an inverter sixpack, a brake chopper and an NTC for temperature sensing. A striking attribute of TycoElectronics smallest housing is its very fast and cost effective clip in assembly.
Inverter Six Pack Modules suitable in particular for motion control applications arecapable of handling currents up to 50A at 600V and 1200V. Their outstanding perfor-mance coupled with a low cost compact design is yet to be matched in the market.
Inverter Half Bridge Modules are designed for motor control applications requiringcurrents up to 150A at 1200V. The small size together with the innovative flow throughconcept allows a very compact and easy to implement six pack arrangement meetingtoday’s and tomorrows demand.
H-Bridge Modules for fast switching applications meet high requirements pertaining to component selection and package design. The usage of either MOSFETs with smallRdson or the fastest IGBTs available, allows Tyco Electronics to offer a broad variety of bridges for all kinds of switching modes (Hard Switching, Zero Voltage) to meet everyneed of the customer.
Tyco Electronics offers stand alone PFC modules as well as its standard PIM moduleswith an integrated PFC. The stand-alone PFC modules are comprised of a half controlledinput rectifier bridge limiting the inrush current and handling short circuits in the output.The built in low inductance capacitor allows to best short circuit high frequencies. PIMmodules with integrated PFC come with an HF capacitor for best EMC performanceand ultra fast switching transistors and diodes for the PFC functionality.

Shunt Modules
In particular for servo and vector drives where current sensing in thephases sometimes is required for monitoring the drive position andmeasuring the load current, Tyco Electronics offers PIM modules with shunts for easy integration.
IPM Modules
Tyco Electronics offers a ultra compact, highly efficient intelligent powermodule with a power factor way in excess of 0.99. No external circuitis required. It has been designed to reduce the harmonic content ofthe input current of equipment fed by the public power grid. The circuitis based upon the traditional BOOST topology. With the extension of a half controlled input rectifier bridge it is capable of offering inrushcurrent and short circuit protection for the equipment connected tothe output.
To keep the ball rolling, Tyco Electronics has devoted extensiveresources in the development of new modules with a strong focus onnew technologies to even better serve its customers’ needs in thefuture.
Application Note: IMC Driver Board
Control of 3~ asynchronous motor with U/F characteristics, where themicro controller integrated on the driver board via logic signals takesover the control of the high performance IGBT modules made by TycoElectronics. With this device an economical system can be realizedfor the control of three phase systems.
