WHAT IS MORALITY?

The dictionary definition of morality is a clear distinction between right and wrong or ‘good’ and ‘bad’. It is a system concerning values and principles, related to actions being right or wrong.

These can vary from person to person depending on their views, for example, one person may think it is necessary to lie sometimes, whereas another may think this is wrong regardless of the circumstance.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MORALITY

Morals can rule your life, if you think it is acceptable to swear, others will avoid you. If you think it is all right to steal, you'll go to jail. What you believe in rules your life.

Morality is in everyone's interests, since the achievement of those interests (i.e. of everyone) is precisely what morality aims at! If everyone behaves morally, then we're all better off than we would be if no-one was moral.

HOW MORALITY DIFFERS?

A study of human nature and decisions they make are not to be judged but to be examined scrupulously. Morality as it were differs due to culture, religion and school of thinking one adopts. These influences will effect the idea of justice. For example in many cultures, murder is punishable by death: now in the West we criticise this idea heavily, yet it is logically sound. It follows the statement ‘what goes around, comes around’, where a murderer who kills, should in turn be killed.

HOW MORALITY DIFFERS?

If the victim was hacked to death, it could be said that by hanging may be humane-yet it is still justifiable to hack the murderer to death, as he did to hi victim this is what is known as Betham Utlitarianism, very mathematical-defining pain and pleasure as quantities. There is however one major flaw in this argument, whoever carries out the death to the murderer, will be tainted with killing.

WHY IS MORALITY IMPORTANT?

Morality is important for a number of reasons. Firstly it defines a person, because it is based on their beliefs, religion, culture and philosophy. Someone’s morals can also affect many other people, because it can affect the decisions they make and their judgement in different situations. This is why it is important to have a clear definition between right and wrong, and knowing what to do in each circumstance.

ROLE PLAYS CHEATING – the act of lying, deception, fraud,

trickery, imposture, or imposition in order to gain an advantage at the expense of others.

BRIBING - the practice of offering something, usually money, in order to gain an illicit advantage

STEALING - the act of taking something which does not belong to you, in order to gain profit at the expense of someone else.

Cheating

Cheating is the act of breaking the rules when situated in a competitive situation.

You can cheat in almost all types of activities you do, for example sports, gambling, relationships and in SCHOOL.

However; what has this got to do with morality?

Cheating is undermining morality mainly because it is a wrong act to do. You are knowingly ‘breaking the rules’

Stealing

Stealing is the act of taking another persons possession either secretly or violently.

The number of stealing's has increased and statistics tell us that 40% of the males and 30% of the females have said they have stolen over the past 12 months.

Teen shoplifting is also on the increase, where they go into shops and deliberately steal products like sweets.

Mugging is the act of stealing with violence. We will now show you a short role-play.

Rights

Rights are legal, social, or ethical principals of freedom.

It is said by many people that people deserve to have the same rights, no matter how small, poor and ugly they are.

A key figurehead in this topic is Martin Luther King, who tried to decrease the amount of racism towards black people who were not treated well because of their skin colour between 1954-1968.

CONCLUSIONThere could be many reasons why we need morality; however some people see it as a bad thing for particular reasons and some see it as a good thing. We need morality as it shows and distinguishes the differences between good and bad. Without knowing what is good and bad, the world will be chaos and not a pleasant place to be in. Some can argue that it limits you to your rights and freedom as you are pressurised to do what is good, and it is difficult to express your opinion of disagreement of something. However there are also many reasons to see morality as a positive quality. By doing all the right things, you are not hurting anyone in society; in fact you are helping and doing good to the society. By doing this, you are setting an example to others around you; let that be younger or elder people which not only shows your maturity but also shows your obedience and worthiness to society.
