MOT DE DANSE DANSE Après les six représentations à guichets fermés en 2017, BJM – Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal reviennent à la demande générale pour présenter à Danse Danse ce vibrant hommage à Leonard Cohen. Il fallait du flair pour imaginer un projet d’une telle envergure ! Si Dance Me résonne tant auprès du public, c’est bien sûr grâce à la réputation des BJM, à la musique du grand Leonard Cohen, aux trois chorégraphes de haut calibre mais également grâce à l’engagement de collaborateurs fabuleux. Nous tenons à féliciter l’audace et la vision de Louis Robitaille qui a su rassembler ces créateurs extraordinaires autour de ce projet. Bravo pour ce tour de force, nous sommes fiers de participer à son rayonnement !

If Dance Me strikes such a chord with audiences, it is of course thanks to the reputation of BJM, the music of the great Leonard Cohen, and the talent of the three top-notch choreographers, but also thanks to the participation of some fabulous creative associates. We would like to acknowledge the boldness and vision of Louis Robitaille, who has gathered an extraordinary creative team around this project. Congratulations on this tour de force. MOT DES BJM – LES BALLETS JAZZ DE MONTRÉALLe temps passe et avec lui les créations. Après plus de deux décennies avec les BJM, la soirée Dance Me, portée par le talent monumental de M. Leonard Cohen et celui des artistes de la compagnie, est sans contredit la production qui m’est la plus personnelle. Quelle belle récompense que de présenter à nouveau à Montréal cette œuvre dansée rassembleuse qui, depuis sa création, a été présentée dans 45 villes de 10 pays sur 3 continents.

Permettez-moi de profiter de ce moment pour remercier toutes les personnes qui ont pris part à cette production et spécialement M. Eric Jean, le dramaturge et metteur en scène du spectacle et surtout mon fidèle compagnon d’armes.

DANCE MEDance Me est une création exclusive inspirée de l’œuvre riche et profonde du poète, artiste et auteur-compositeur d’origine montréalaise Leonard Cohen, qui avait d’ailleurs approuvé le projet de spectacle de son vivant.

Sous la direction artistique de Louis Robitaille et la dramaturgie scénique, d’Eric Jean, ce spectacle unique prend vie en cinq saisons comme autant de cycles de l’existence tels que les a dépeints Leonard Cohen dans son œuvre.

Dance Me marie ainsi écritures scénique, visuelle, musicale, dramaturgique et chorégraphique pour rendre hommage au plus grand des ambassadeurs Montréalais.

Dance Me is an exclusive creation inspired by the rich and profound work of Montreal-based poet, artist and songwriter Leonard Cohen, who has approved the show project during his lifetime.

Under the artistic direction of Louis Robitaille and the dramaturgy of Eric Jean, this riveting homage to the famed poet-singer-songwriter evokes the grand cycles of existence in five seasons, as described in Cohen’s deeply reflective music and poems.

Dance Me combines scenic, visual, musical, dramaturgical and choreographic writing to pay tribute to Montreal’s greatest ambassador.

Louis Robitaille, danseur et directeur artistique, est né à Montréal en 1957. C’est à un spectacle de danse d’école secondaire en 1973 que Louis Robitaille doit sa carrière. Le talent de l’adolescent ne manque pas

d’attirer l’attention du professeur d’éducation physique Peter George, aussi danseur de la troupe Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. Par l’entremise de George, il obtient une bourse lui permettant de participer au programme de formation d’été de la compagnie.

En 1974, Louis Robitaille se joint à la Compagnie de danse Eddy Toussaint (par la suite appelée Ballet de Montréal), où il pratique la danse et étudie sous la tutelle de divers grands maîtres de ballet. Son incarnation du personnage légendaire d’Alexis le Trotteur en fait un symbole de la danse québécoise. En 1978, à l’initiative de Madame Chiriaeff, qu’il considère comme un mentor, le jeune danseur est recruté par Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. Au début des années 1980, il est invité à plusieurs reprises par les Ballets de l’Opéra Grand Avignon. Il y fait alors une rencontre marquante, celle de Rudy Bryans. Ce danseur étoile du Ballet National de Marseille, l’inspire, le guide et aura une influence majeure sur son interprétation et sur sa démarche artistique.

En 1984, il participe à un premier concours, dans le cadre du Festival international d’Helsinki, avec sa partenaire Anik Bissonnette. Ils interprètent Un simple moment, de Toussaint et remportent une médaille d’or pour le chorégraphe. Leur réputation de chouchous de la danse au Québec dans les années 80 n’empêche pas les deux artistes d’explorer de nouveaux horizons.

À l’invitation du fondateur du Festival des Deux Mondes de Spoleto, Gian Carlo Menotti, qui leur apporte un très grand soutien, ils participent comme artistes invités aux trois festivals que dirige Menotti : en Italie, aux États-Unis (Spoleto Festival USA de Charleston) et en Australie (Melbourne International Arts Festival). Ils sont également artistes invités au Ballet du Capitole à Toulouse et à plusieurs galas à travers le monde. Louis Robitaille se joint aux Grands Ballets Canadiens en 1989. Entre 1990 et 1998, année de son départ, il ajoute à son répertoire 35 rôles puisés des œuvres de chorégraphes tels, entre autres, Balanchine, Dolin, Duato, Fokine, Forsythe, Kudelka, Kylián, Limon, Lock, Nault et Tudor. En 1994, Louis Robitaille assure la direction artistique du Jeune Ballet du Québec, ce qui lui permet d’explorer d’autres formes que celles qu’il pratique déjà aux GBC.

Encouragé par la réponse à son travail, il fonde alors une troupe de ballet de chambre, Bande à Part, et Danse-Théâtre de Montréal. Tout en continuant à danser, Louis Robitaille devient directeur artistique des BJM en 1998.

Il redéfinit l’approche artistique de la compagnie, sans pour autant abandonner sa particularité. Il lui donne une identité contemporaine et la dynamise en l’ouvrant aux courants chorégraphiques actuels. Louis Robitaille est officier de l’ordre du Canada et chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec. Il est lauréat du Prix Jacqueline-Lemieux. Il a été à ses débuts de nombreuses fois récipiendaire de bourses du ministère de la Culture du Québec. Sa compagnie et lui ont reçu le Prix Rideau Hommage et le Prix de reconnaissance du Conseil des arts de Montréal.

Louis Robitaille is a dancer and an artistic director and he was born at Montréal in 1957. A high school dance performance in 1973 launched Louis Robitaille’s career when Peter George, physical education teacher and dancer with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, noticed the teenager’s aptitude and arranged a scholarship for the company’s summer program.

In 1974, Louis Robitaille joined la Compagnie de danse Eddy Toussaint (later Ballet de Montréal), where he danced and studied under a variety of teachers including ballet masters Olga Merinova and William Griffith.

Louis Robitaille became a Québec icon—personified by his interpretation of the legend of Alexis le Trotteur. With his partner Anik Bissonnette, Louis Robitaille achieved greater acclaim. They danced together in competition for the first time at the Helsinki International Festival (1984), dancing Toussaint’s Un Simple Moment and winning a gold medal for the choreographer. Although they were Québec’s “dance darlings” of the 1980s, they also travelled to Europe, the US and Australia, making guest appearances at the Spoletto Festival in Italy and France’s Toulouse Ballet.

Louis Robitaille joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens as a principal dancer in 1989, dancing L’Après Midi d’un Faune the first season. Between 1990 and 1996, he added 35 roles to his repertoire in works by choreographers such as Limon, Balanchine, Tudor, Fokine, Dolin, Duato, Kylian and Forsythe.

In 1994 Robitaille became artistic director of the Jeune Ballet du Québec and founded a small chamber ballet group, Bande à Part. With Anick Bissonnette he founded Danse-Théâtre de Montréal in 1995. He was appointed artistic director of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal in 1998.

From this position he reoriented the company, changing its name to bjm_danse, presenting it as more contemporary than jazz and initiating fusions with theatre, circus, visual arts and new music. While pushing dancers to go beyond even ballet-jazz standards of high energy and technique, he introduced repertoire with an urgent, youthful appeal by commissioning ballets from international choreographers like Aszure Barton (a former BJM dancer), Crystal Pite (Vancouver) and Rodrigo Pederneiras (Brazil). He also established regular choreography workshops to encourage BJM dancers to hone their dance-making abilities.

Louis Robitaille was awarded the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize in 1994. He was inducted as an officer of the Order of Canada in 1995 and received the National Order of Quebec in 1996.

Metteur en scène montréalais prolifique et inventif, Eric Jean est reconnu pour sa grande implication auprès de la relève, tant dans l’enseignement qu’au

niveau professionnel.

Mais c’est surtout avec sa méthode de création axée sur les improvisations dirigées, le travail en parallèle avec l’auteur et l’environnement scénique comme point de départ à la construction de ses spectacles, qu’Eric Jean a fait sa marque et sa réputation. Les exemples les plus probants de cette technique, que le metteur en scène nomme « écriture vivante », sont certainement le fameux Hippocampe, écrit en collaboration avec Pascal Brullemans, et couronné du Prix de la critique en 2003 et Chambre(s) écrit cette fois-ci avec Pascal Chevarie en 2009. Suite au succès du premier, le metteur en scène est mis en nomination pour le prestigieux prix Siminovitch 2004 en figurant au nombre des cinq finalistes.

Parmi les autres mises en scène les plus marquantes de sa carrière, nommons Corps étrangers/Cuerpos extranos (2005), écrite en collaboration avec Pascal Brullemans, Opium_37 (2009-2011), écrite en collaboration avec Catherine Léger, S’embrasent (2009-2017), pièce pour public adolescent de Luc Tartar, Le ventriloque (2012), de Larry Tremblay, Survive (2013) d’Olivier Kemeid, Testament de Vickie Gendreau (2014), Variations sur un temps de David Ives (2015) et Le Joker (2016) de Larry Tremblay.

L’automne 2016 a marqué le début d’une nouvelle aventure pour Eric Jean puisqu’il a quitté la direction du Théâtre de Quat’Sous pour se consacrer davantage à la mise en scène, à l’écriture scénique et à la réalisation cinématographique.

Prolific and imaginative Montreal-based director Eric Jean is known for his commitment to emerging artists, both through his work as a teacher and at the professional level.

But Jean’s reputation rests primarily on his creative approach, which is based on directed improvisations, close collaboration with the playwright, and the use of the stage environment as a starting point for each production. Among the strongest examples of this technique, which he calls écriture vivante (“living writing”), are the memorable Hippocampe, co-written with Pascal Brullemans and winner of the 2003 Montreal Critics’ Choice award, and Chambres (2009), co-written with Pascal Chevarie. The success of Hippocampe earned Jean a spot among the five finalists for the prestigious 2004 Siminovitch Prize in Theatre.

ANDONIS FONIADAKIS Chorégraphe / Choreographer

Andonis Foniadakis a grandi sur l’île de Crète, en Grèce. Il a commencé sa formation de danseur à l’école de danse de sa ville natale. De 1990 à 1992, il étudie à l’École nationale de danse d’Athènes où il reçoit, avant

d’obtenir son diplôme, la prestigieuse bourse Maria Callas pour poursuivre ses études à l’école Rudra-Béjart de Lausanne jusqu’en 1994.

Andonis Foniadakis a collaboré en tant qu’interprète avec le Béjart Ballet de Lausanne (1994-1996) sous la direction de Maurice Béjart, le Ballet de l’Opéra national de Lyon (1996-2002) sous la direction de Yorgos Loukos, la Saburo Teshigawara / Karas Co. (2004) sous la direction de Saburo Teshigawara, puis avec sa propre compagnie de danse, Apotosoma – Andonis Foniadakis.

Il a été le directeur du Ballet National de Grèce pour la saison 2016/2017 et a réalisé la programmation des saisons 2016/2017 et 2017/2018. Il y est actuellement chorégraphe résident.

Andonis Foniadakis a été invité à chorégraphier trois opéras : Théâtre des Champs Elysées Paris – Castor et Pollux de Rameau, Opéra National du Rhin – Les Boréades de Rameau, GRAME Lyon – Il canto de la pelle de Claudio Ambrosini.

En 2014, il collabore comme coordonateur avec Darren Aronofsky sur son nouveau film NOAH. En 2012, il reçoit le Prix Danza and Danza du meilleur chorégraphe de l’année en Italie pour la création Les Noces pour MaggioDanza.

En plus de créer et d’interpréter, Andonis Foniadakis enseigne sa propre technique de danse. En 2003, Andonis Foniadakis crée sa propre compagnie de danse, Apotosoma – Andonis Foniadakis, à Lyon, en France. Depuis, il montre son travail en France, en Grèce, en Italie, en Finlande, au Luxembourg, en Allemagne, en Angleterre et aux États-Unis.

Andonis Foniadakis grew up on the island of Crete, in Greece. He began his dance training at the local dance school in his hometown. From 1990 to 1992, he studied at the State Dance School of Athens and before his graduation he received the prestigious Maria Callas scholarship to continue his studies in Rudra Bejart Lausanne, in Switzerland until 1994.

As a dancer, Andonis Foniadakis has collaborated with Béjart Ballet Lausanne (1994-1996) under the direction of Maurice Béjart, Lyon Opera Ballet (1996-2002) under the direction of Yorgos Loukos, Saburo Teshigawara / Karas Co. (2004) under the direction of Saburo Teshigawara, as well as, with his own dance company, Apotosoma – Andonis Foniadakis.

During the years of his professional engagement with the above companies he has performed choreographic works of Maguy Marin, Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Dominique Boivin, Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, Maurice Béjart, Ohad Naharin, Frédéric Flamand, Bill T. ANNABELLE LOPEZ OCHOA Chorégraphe / Choreographer

La chorégraphe belgo-colombienne Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (née en 1973) a reçu sa formation en danse à l’École du Ballet royal de Flandre, en Belgique. Après avoir dansé pendant douze ans, notamment comme

soliste avec le Ballet Scapino, elle décide de se consacrer entièrement à la chorégraphie en 2003.

Chorégraphe recherchée et primée, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa a créé des œuvres pour plus de 40 compagnies à travers le monde, parmi lesquelles le Ballet royal de Flandre, le Göteborg Ballet, le Luna Negra Dance Theater, la Compañia Nacional de Danza de Madrid, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, le Daniil Simkin Intensio Project et le New York City Ballet.

Chorégraphe polyvalente, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa fraye autant avec la danse qu’avec le théâtre, l’opéra et la comédie musicale et collabore également à des événements dans le domaine de la mode, notamment au projet du Musée Van Gogh des célèbres créateurs de mode néerlandais Viktor & Rolf.

Elle fait partie du collectif de danse-théâtre De Fantasten pour lequel elle a codirigé avec succès cinq productions intégrales, présentées dans de nombreux théâtres et festivals à travers les Pays-Bas.

En 2007, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa a été choisie pour faire partie du prestigieux Institut de chorégraphie du New York City Ballet. The Colombian-Belgian Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (born in 1973) completed her dance education at the Royal Ballet School of Flanders in Belgium. After a 12-year-long dance career, where she danced as a soloist with the Scapino Ballet, she decided in 2003 to focus her energies solely on choreography.

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is an award-winning and sought-after choreographer who has created works for more than 40 companies around the world such as Royal Ballet of Flanders, Gothenburg Ballet, Luna Negra Dance Theater, Compania Nacional de Danza Madrid, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Daniil Simkin Intensio Project and New York City Ballet.

Ihsan Rustem est né à Londres, où il a reçu sa formation à la Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Il amorce sa carrière professionnelle à l’âge de 17 ans en se joignant d’abord à la compagnie de

Matthew Bourne, Adventures in Motion Pictures, suivi d’engagements avec le Ballett Theater München (Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich) et Introdans aux Pays-Bas.

En 2007, il s’établit en Suisse où il est membre fondateur du Ballet du Stadttheater de Berne et du Tanz Luzerner Theater. Pendant cette période, Rustem crée des rôles dans les œuvres des chorégraphes Wayne McGregor, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, Matthew Bourne, Stijn Celis, Patrick Delcroix, Cayetano Soto, Felix Landerer et Guilherme Bothello, et travaille avec les chorégraphes Mats Ek, Jiri Kylián, Paul Lightfoot / Sol Leon, Hans van Manen et William Forsythe, entre autres.

En 2010, à l’invitation de Sarah Slipper, il crée State of Matter pour le Northwest Dance Project à Portland, en Oregon (États-Unis), une œuvre qui remporte à la fois le concours Global Dance de Sadler’s Wells en 2010 et le Prix du public du 25e concours international pour chorégraphes de Hanovre. Depuis 2015, Ihsan Rustem est chorégraphe en résidence au Northwest Dance Project. Il a été directeur artistique du Dance Art Studio Ballettschule Luzern, en Suisse et y est présentement conseiller artistique.

Ihsan Rustem est lauréat du programme de commande internationale de Hubbard Street Dance Chicago en 2014 et du premier « Shindig » chorégraphique de Whim W’him à Seattle, en 2015. Son œuvre Carmen pour le Northwest Dance Project a reçu le prix des lecteurs 2017 du Dance Magazine pour la meilleure collaboration. Il s’est également illustré comme chorégraphe dans l’émission de télévision russe The Bolshoi Ballet en 2015.

Il a créé des œuvres pour de nombreuses compagnies internationales dont Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2, le Northwest Dance Project (États-Unis), le Tanz Luzerner Theater (Suisse), la National Youth Dance Company (Royaume-Uni), et Interdans (Belgique).

Rustem was the 2014 recipient of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s International Commissioning Project and a winner of Whim W’him’s inaugural Choreographic Shindig 2015. His sixth original work for NDP, Carmen, won Dance Magazine’s 2017 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Collaboration. He was a featured choreographer for Russia’s TV show The Bolshoi Ballet.

Ihsan Rustem has created works for several international companies such as Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2 (USA), NWDP (USA), Tanz Luzerner Theater (Switzerland), National Youth Dance Company (UK) et Interdans (Belgium).

LEONARD COHEN

Leonard Norman Cohen, poète, romancier, auteur-compositeur-interprète (né le 21 septembre 1934 à Montréal ; décédé le 7 novembre 2016 à Los Angeles). Leonard Cohen a été un des artistes canadiens les plus révérés du 20e siècle. Artiste sage, spirituel, bohème

et romantique, il a produit un ensemble d’œuvres littéraires acclamé et s’est bâti une grande carrière dans l’industrie de la musique populaire. Dans sa poésie, ses romans et sa musique, il se questionne constamment sur la condition humaine et puise dans les thèmes de l’amour, du deuil, et de la mort et son engagement pour son art. Improbable vedette poétique de la pop, Leonard Cohen s’est démarqué par l’imagerie intense et la profondeur de ses paroles – qu’il livre à l’aide de sa voix bourrue au registre restreint s’étant intensifiée et assombrie avec l’âge – et des mélodies simples et chantantes. En plus d’être Compagnon de l’Ordre du Canada, il a été intronisé au Panthéon de la musique canadienne, aux panthéons canadiens et américains des auteurs-compositeurs, au Panthéon du rock and roll et à l’Allée des célébrités de la musique folk. Leonard Cohen was one of the most iconic Canadian artists of the 20th century. A sage, mystic, bohemian and romantic, he built an acclaimed body of literary work and a revered career in pop music. In his poetry, novels and music, he constantly probed the human condition, exploring themes of love, loss, death and his commitment to his art. As a poetic and unlikely pop star, his narrow-ranged, gruff voice, which deepened and darkened with age, and his reliance on simple, singsong melodies were complimented by the intense imagery and depth of his lyrics. A Companion of the Order of Canada, he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, the US Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Folk Music Walk of Fame. He also received the Glenn Gould Prize, the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, eight Juno Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and numerous other honors.
