As a board member, I will connue to improve and
maintain the Montpelier community common
grounds. I have been a Montpelier resident for 21
years and really enjoy the community and residents. I
have been on the board since 2009, served as Pool
Commiee Chairperson since 2007 and was league
representave for the Marlins Swim Team.
Bob Derrick
12608 Cedarbrook Lane
301 7765008
I grew up in Montpelier, aended our public schools,
graduated from Virginia Tech and spent 30 years in
the United States Army Corps of Engineers. I am cur-
rently a Project Manager for a large construcon man-
agement firm and have returned to the same house
that my parents bought in 1967. I have been acvely
involved in the pool, MCA socials, common grounds,
swim team, and have served as President of the Asso-
ciaon for the last several years.
I believe that our Board of Trustees should operate
openly and honestly, be good stewards of all MCA
resources, and respond to the concerns of community
members. The Montpelier Swim and Racquet Club is
a valuable asset to each homeowner and, in addion
to providing wholesome family recreaon, keeps the
value of our homes compeve. It is vital that we
maintain our common grounds and facilies, monitor
the regional traffic and business developments and
focus on neighborhood security issues. I will strive to
represent the best interests of all homeowners and
keep the lines of communicaon open to enhance the
lifestyle of our unique neighborhood.
Patricia Douville8904 Eastbourne Lane

I am married to John and have three boys Patrick 26,
Sean 24 and Colin 22. My family and I have
lived in Montpelier since 1996, however I grew up
here from 1967-1984. I currently am employed at
St. Vincent Pallo High School in Laurel where I've
taught math for 18 years. I was elected to the MCA
Board of Trustees the last four years and I also servedon the Board several years ago. I served on the Board
of Directors for the Seler's Landing Homeowner's
Associaon for several years. I was an acve volunteer
on the Montpelier Swim Team from 1997-2006. Now I
wish to contribute my me to our neighborhood in a
different capacity. I am interested in pool operaons
and social events.
Lillian Fazio
8716 Crystal Rock Lane
301 7763267
My name is Lillian R. Fazio. I am an original homeown-
er. I have been your Treasurer for the past four years.I was also Treasurer from 1985 to 1996. At this point, I
feel very comfortable in handling the finances of the
community.
I believe Montpelier is a wonderful place to live. I
would like to keep it that way by taking care of prob-
lems as they arise. I believe in using our Reserve Funds
for the upkeep and beautification of the common
grounds. However, I also feel we must be prudent in
the amount of Reserve we spend so we do not de-
plete ourselves in the event an emergency arises. I
am very much in favor of using legal assistance in or-
der to collect past due assessments.
I am also a tennis player and will actively work to keep
the courts attractive.
Tim Jacobs
8711 Crestmont Lane
240 8412787
Our family has enjoyed living in Montpelier for over
five years and during this time I have served for four
years on the board. I am interested in keeping the
homeowner informed and empowered through the
work of the board. As one of the owners of the Yahoo
list serv, I try to keep the community informed and up-to-date on events in the community. I continue to
look at ways to improve security and community im-
provements. My approach on the board is that the
homeowner is in charge and the board is to facilitate
the opinion of the homeowners.

cherry tree stumps removed, and there were 14
younger tree stumps removed from Cedarbrook Lane.
We have requested that Cherry trees be planted in

SECURITY COMMITTEE REPORT
We experienced 4 minor crimes in our community the
past two months. (1) A break in occurred in the 12300
block of Shadetree Lane some me between 9:30 and
11:15 AM, June 19th. Someone threw a rock through a
family room window at the back of house and le via the
front door. They took a 27" computer monitor, a Wiiand controllers, Xbox controllers, several pieces of jewel
ry. (2) B&E into car on driveway at 12100 block of Mt.
Pleasant Drive late at night on 7113. Garage door open
er and small items in car were taken. Nothing was taken
from the open garage. No damage to car so it was possi
bly unlocked. (3) B&E on 9200 block of Twin Hill Rd on
7/11/13 @ 4:15 PM. The kitchen window was broken
out and electronics and alcohol stolen. They le via slid
ing door. (4) B&E in 12400 block of Twin Hill Lane on
7/11/13 while owners were away. The criminals used a
crowbar to separate the door from the frame and enter
the house. All recommendaons for protecon were
followed except that Police recommended a longer and
stronger deadbolt. All incidents were reported via 911 to
the County Police. There were no alarm systems in the
homes for any of these unfortunate incidents.
The Fire/EMS Department does have a ambulance fee
billing program. They contract with a third party to
aempt collecon from insurance companies. While the
third party may send noce about the bill to a cizen,
the cizen should never receive a bill for the service, and
should forward anything looking like a bill to their insur-ance company. This informaon came directly from the
County Fire Chief with assistance from Councilwoman
Mary Lehman.
Sandi Jimenez and I, both from Orwood Lane, graduated
from the Prince Georges County Cizens Police Acade
my. This 12 week course introduced us to all aspects of
the police department. We now have a beer under
standing of how the department works. There will be a
new academy starng on September 6, 2013. Please see
detailed flyer in this newsleer for specific informaon.

SECURITY COMMITTEE REPORT
Do you need to ask yourself are my lights on?
Most people leave lights off during the night timeand what does that do for you and
your neighbors??
Invites these guys Yes, youre correct -- thieves.
The night time hours are the peak hours for thieves to take YOUR carfor a joy ride or take your hard-earned possessions from you. WHY?
The exterior of the house is dark and provides a hidden area so these individuals can do their
work. If it is dark they know you or fellow neighbors cannot see them. People have that mindset it will not happen to me, and leave cars unlocked.
Leaving valuables on seats or in plain view (exp. Computers, iPods, GPS, money, ETC)
So how do we prevent this from happening to us or our neighbors? Good Question!
Lighting your exterior of you house with sensor lights or porch/ garage lights are a huge plus,
this makes it very hard for someone to sneak around your property unnoticed. Secure your vehicles!!
Take items out of your vehicle and if using a GPS, wipe the window down (they look for the
suction cup rings). If they cant see it, its not there.
These steps will help provide more security to your property and vehicles. So
light up those criminals and keep them out of your neighborhood.

An emergency incident occurred on 7/25/13 when an

immediately called 911 and requested an ambulance. A
police officer and an ambulance arrived in less than 5
minutes. The police forced entry through the back

MONTPELIER TODAY 15 Sept-Oct 2013
On Saturday
July 27th
the
Montpelier
Associaon had its first Lets Play Pickleball event on
our tennis courts. Montpelier resident Gina Oliva organized this event aer learning to play at The Villages in
Florida. Gina kept thinking I will have to rere to Florida
if I want to play Pickleball but then she thought Why
not just bring Pickleball to Montpelier? With support
from the Montpelier Board of Trustees and a few local
Pickleball afficianados the event was a success.
Gina has lived in Montpelier
since 1992. She worked at
Gallaudet University for 37
years before rering in
2009. Her colleagues in the
Department of PhysicalEducaon and Recreaon
provided Gina with equip

Ambassador for the United States Pickleball Associaon
and Kevin Hall, Teachers Aide at Maryland School for the
Deaf and Lifeguard at Fairlands Aquac Center were on
hand at the July 27th
event to provide PIckleball instruc

and Pat Behanna,
Karen and Kae
Grion (with
friend Phil Gandy),
Lynne, Mahew, and Danielle Collman, Sue and Peter
Thompson, and several other Montpelier residents
learned to play and by all accounts had a great me. Al
ready as we go to press, several of these individuals have
returned to the Montpelier tennis courts to play Pickle
ball with equipment loaned by Mr. Hall.
Gina plans to organize another event in the fall. WhilePickleball can be enjoyed by all ages, it tends to be parc
ularly popular with baby boomers and Lord knows we
have plenty of them just waing for a wonderful new
sport to get them up and moving.
If you like tennis, table tennis, badminton, racquetball, or
squash, you will like Pickleball. If cost, availability, and/or
physical issues prevent you from the more strenuous of
those sports, you may especially like Pickleball.
The MCA invites you to come out and enjoy our first 5K
Run/Walk on Saturday, August 31st, 2013. For runners
and walkers, this will be a great opportunity to see our
magnificent neighborhood, and be exposed to the beauty
of our neighboring Mansion grounds from a different per
specve.
All Montpelier residents 15 and over are welcome, and a
special KidsRun along the new paths by the community
pool will be held for those 14 and younger.
Volunteers Needed
For those wishing to parcipate without running/walking,
volunteers will contribute to the events success by
organizing the Kids FunRun parcipants,
seng up cones and direconal signs,
managing the refreshments table, and
providing cups of water at points throughout therace and at the finish line.
Volunteering will be a great way to reconnect with neigh

more enjoyable for everyone. If you are able to volunteer,
please contact by Felipe Arzayus by email or 301604

WEBSITE GETS OVER 1200 VIEWS EVERY MONTH.
We connue to steadily outpace views of our website
over last year. We have had close to 3,000 pageviews
since my last report in June, bringing our average to over
1200 views every month, a 75% increase this year alone.
We are geng fewer first me visitors, but those who
are returning are reading more content. This connues
to be important for us if we wish to reach out to new
adversers which we havent done recently.
Weve recently posted arcles about a pickleball day,
and the upcoming 5K Run/Walk. Our goals is to ancipate residents needs for informaon and reduce the
need for residents to ask the same quesons over and
over again on the private email list. As both Mary
Hughes and myself have been out of town several mes
this summer, addional writers on the site would allow
us to keep up with demand for new content, keep read
ers coming back and keep the adversing dollars flowing.
MONTPELIER SOCIAL EVENTS GET SHARED WITH 150-
200 PEOPLE EACH MONTH.
We have 145 people who follow our Facebook page
(theyve liked it), a slight but steady growth over the
number two months ago and below our sixmonth goal.Social events get the most likes and the most shares
with many social event announcements being shown in
150200 peoples Facebook walls. The age range of peo
ple who talk about Montpelier the most on Facebook are
4554 years old. If Board members were to share more
about Montpelier, we could reach thousands more po
tenal future home buyers.
We are connuing our cover photo contest, in which
submissions from neighbors the provide a glimpse of life
in Montpelier get prominent placement at the top of our
Facebook page.
NEXTDOOR MONTPELIER TAKING OFF
We now have 107 neighbors in 85 households that have
joined Nextdoor Montpelier. This is an average of 2.5
neighbors joining every day.
Comments from those who parcipate:
I far prefer this. Immediate. Relevant. More customiza
ble and more easily searchable.
I love it. I like that it's more of a conversaon here than
the Yahoo listserv. I also like the ability to create groupsfor different types of discussions and the
"Recommendaons" category which will hopefully gain
in popularity as we get more site members.
I think it's worlds beer than the listserv funconality
wise. Speed of posng, the ability to add an image, etc
are all great.
I think its beer than the yahoo groups list serve. I like
seeing the pictures of those who are my neighbors.
The speed of posng is the biggest plus for me at the
moment. I do like the organizaon into topics also.
It is nice that compeon seems to have forced some
improvements to the list serv and made it beer aswell.
I agree with **** and the immediate posngs. I also
like the different categories. It just seems easier to use
than the Yahoo email list. I can see several posngs at
once and just skip over the ones I don't care to read in
stead of opening each email one at a me.
I've also learned that each member of Nextdoor has the

MONTPELIER TODAY 19 Sept-Oct 2013
Hi Neighbors,
Each me I drive down Oxwell
Lane and make the le onto Ivo
ry Pass, I check out the Framing
ham at 8720. The variety ofplants that beckons and say
"Welcome " are striking. There
are Knock Out rose bushes of
pink, red, and yellow that re
boom all summer. Soening the
base of these plants are several types of large leaf hosta.
Jessie and Susan Hensley have lived in the house for
twenty years. Jessie says he was movated to plant flow
ers to please his mother in law who lived with them. He
says she was the sweetest person, treated him like her
son and loved beauful flowers. When viewing this flow
er bed your eyes begin to noce the tall, large white orred lilies tucked in between the roses.
I asked Jessie what is his secret to such large, healthy
plants? He says he ferlizes all his plants in the Spring,
then sprinkles Osmacote weekly. He also uses Miracle
Gro plant food. He has amended his flower beds with
Leaf Gro and Scos top soil.
Knock Out roses are reblooming roses. What that re
quires is for you to cut off the spent roses and ferlize
the plants, then within six weeks you have some splendif
erous impact !
Jessie is also interested in planng vegetables but does
not have a suitable place for them, so he created the
place by purchasing "grow boxes". These are vinyl con
tainers that are 36
inches long and 20
inches deep. They
have a watering tube
on the side that drains
into the boom of the
box. There is also a
place on the boom
where you can check
the soil for properamounts of moisture.
Jessie has posioned
these growing boxes
along a pathway to a
garden room. The sun
is strong in that area
and the tomatoes are
BIG. He also grows
string beans and cucumbers.
Of course, I could not leave
without asking Jessie to share
some ps of his success. He
swears that the nursery that
has all the best plants, and
starter vegetables with thelowest prices is Papa John's
nursery. It is located off Rt. 97
North, second le onto New
Cut Road. This is the place
where he purchases most of his plants and ferlizer.
Sounds like I must take a ride with my gardening buddy
and check it out.
The University of Maryland has been promong a pro
gram called "Grow it, Eat it". The program encourages
home gardeners to grow their own fresh produce.
PEAR TREE PROJECT:
Several of the trees that the county planted last year to
replace the old pear trees have died. According to Kim
Moyer who is the Project Coordinator, Neighborhood

ing someone to reassess the situaon. Hopefully those
trees will then be replaced in the fall. Please phone Kim

property.
REMEMBER IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO WATER THE
