December 2018Monthly Security Review

The operations of the Turkish Armed Forces in the north of Iraq and in Syria, especially against the PKK and ISIS terrorist organizations, in addition to the operations in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions towards the PKK terrorist organization continue.

It has been assessed that, the terrorrist organizations in question may continue its attacks primarily towards the police and military units in order to interrupt the ongoing operations.

Especially in the recent period, it has been seen that the terrorist organization used bomb-laden drones in the actions, including civilian targets. The drones failed to reach their targets due to technical failures and possible jamming by the Turkish military. Also in this period, bomb-laden vehicles and suicide bombers were seized by security forces in Mardin and Malatya. It is considered that the terrorist organization may pose such threats in the future.

In addition, within the scope of operations carried out against terrorist organizations in Turkey, it is observed that the detentions of the members of ISIS, Al-Nusra, Al-Qaida and far left organizations continue intensively.

It has been assessed that, as the terrorist organizations lose power due to the operations being carried out, they may be in search of maintaining their organizational activities.

The developments related to these sensitivities will be followed by us and the necessary information will be shared via SMS and e-mail when needed.

Highlight of the Month

6The Biggest Cyber Threats to Watch Out for in 2019 Experts from The Chertoff Group, a g Cryptojackinglobal security advisory firm that enables clients to navigate changes in security risk, technology and policy, developed a list of the biggest cyber threats to watch out for in 2019.

Cryptojacking

If the recent and explosive growth of ransomware is an indication of anything, it is that criminal organizations will continue to employ malware for profit. Cryptojacking, otherwise known as “Cryptomining malware”, uses insidious both invasive methods of initial access, and drive-by scripts on websites, to steal resources from unsuspecting victims. Cryptojacking is a quieter, more insidious means of profit affecting endpoints, mobile devices, and servers: it runs in the background, quietly stealing spare machine resources to make greater profits for less risk. Due to its ease of deployment, low-risk profile, and profitability TCG posits that this trend will continue to increase in 2019.

Software subversion

While exploitation of software flaws is a longstanding tactic used in cyber attacks, efforts to actively subvert software development processes are also increasing. For example, developers are in some cases specifically targeted for attack. Malware has also been detected in certain open source software libraries. As software code becomes more complex and dynamic, the opportunities for corruption increase as well. In 2019, we will see a continued increase in the use of third-party applications or services as the “back channel” into networks through the corruption of third-party firmware/software (and updates thereof); such back channels can bypass traditional protective and detection capabilities in place to prevent externally-based incidents and infecting the corporate network.

Rise in attacks to the cryptocurrency ecosystem

“Why do people rob banks? That’s where the money is.” Use of cryptocurrencies for everyday transactions is becoming commonplace, and we will continue to see a related rise in attacks against individuals and organizations who use cryptocurrency as an increasingly standard element of their business operations and transaction options.

New Surveillance Tool: Gait RecognitionNew technology by a Chinese artificial intelligence company is analyzing the way a person walks as a means of identification.Chinese authorities have begun to deploy a new surveillance tool called "gait recognition" software that uses people's body shapes and how they walk to identify them, even when their faces are hidden from cameras.

The software is already being used by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai and is part of a push across China to develop artificial intelligence and data-driven surveillance that is raising concerns about how far the technology will go.

The software, built by Chinese artificial intelligence company Watrix, extracts a person's silhouette from video and analyzes the silhouette's movement to create a model of the way the person walks. It doesn't require special cameras — the software can use footage from surveillance cameras already in place to analyze gait.

Watrix chief executive officer Huang Yongzhen said the system can identify people from up to 50 meters away, even with their back turned and their face covered. "Gait analysis cannot be filled by simple limping, walking with splayed feet or hunching over, because we are analyzing all the features of an entire body," Yongzhen said.

For now, the technology isn't capable of identifying people in real-time yet. Users must upload the video into the program, which takes about 10 minutes to search through an hour of video.

Personal Safety Guide For People With DisabilitiesAccording to the report of World Health Organization, 15 % of the world’s population is disabled. This number is about 9 million in our country. A significant point leading disability into a dead end is vulnerability of people with disabilities to dangers such as maltreatment, etc. for help or other purposes. Besides, people with disabilities may be unfortunately perceived as more vulnerable and easier targets for malicious people. However, individuals with disabilities can also protect themselves and also defend themselves. For this purpose, people with disabilities need to believe themselves, to be at peace with themselves and to be on the safe side in order to protect themselves. It is necessary to be more careful and to take extra precautions in addition to these precautions.

Generally;

• Know your own neighborhood / region very well. Determine alternative roads, accessible phones, restaurants, police stations, stores, etc. well.

• Make sure your home is safe. In particular, wheelchair users should pay attention for the door locks and peepholes to be at eye level.

• If you have speech disorder, ask a friend of yours or your family to record voice message to be used in any emergency. Your name, address, disability may be included in this message. Keep a written message with you and keep the voice message you recorded next to the phone in your home.

Secure Life

8• Create a support network. This may include your family and

your friends. If possible, especially at night, travel with your friends. Tell your neighbors and friends where you’re going before going out.

• Always carry/keep a note including a written description of your medical needs with you for emergency cases.

• Record the numbers to be called in emergency and numbers of people to be reached in emergency on your mobile device (phone, computer, ipad, etc), if any, or keep them written on a paper.

• Record 155 Police Emergency and 112 Emergency Service Call on speed dial (click to call) of your mobile phone.

• Learn the escape ways from whereabout (your home) in case of emergencies in advance. Tell the situation your family, friends, companions. Carry out emergency escape drill twice a year. Never use elevator in emergencies.

• Do not go to the streets or places you do not recognize or with poor lighting without your companion or an accompanying person; if you have to go those places, let your acquaintances know.

Particularly;

• People with mental disabilities should carry a piece of paper identifying themselves written by their relatives.

• Visually impaired people should not use medication without names in Braille on the pillboxes or without being sure about the name written.

• Visually impaired people who have trained dogs with them should know that these dogs have free entrance everywhere, ‘’pets not allowed’’ sign does not apply to the seeing eye dogs to help visually impaired people.

• Visually impaired people should be careful to have a reliable person with them while using the password of their credit card.

• Visually impaired people should know the on-off buttons (combi boiler, stove, iron etc.) of electrical household appliances and domestic appliances. They should be able to

• Regular maintenance of power wheelchairs should be carried out, thus so much faster and more comfortable ride is done.

• Never use the moving stairways alone in places where there is no elevator, ask help from the officials or people around.

• Persons having impaired hearing should set up light warning systems, light warning smoke detectors and bed and pillow vibration alarm devices in their houses against cases of danger and emergency. The electronic devices used should have light warning systems.

• Persons having impaired hearing should be very careful outdoors where the vehicle traffic is heavy.

• Persons having impaired hearing must look over where the light warning systems used in emergency are, when they go to the places such as shopping malls, etc.
