COMMUNICATION CORNER
The charter of Olivedale Senior Citizens of
Fairfield County stipulates an age requirement of
55 or older to become a member. Therefore, policy
states non-members may not participate in
activities at Olivedale except when a person is age
55 or older and visiting for the first time with
another member or the activity is open to the
public. We always welcome guests to accompany
members for a one time visit before paying the
annual member fee in order to make an informed
decision in becoming a member of one of the
premier senior centers in the country.
Summer Time
Now that summer is here, just a reminder that
children or young adults (anyone not a member or
ineligible for membership—under 55) are not
permitted to wait for parents or grandparents
during scheduled activities except when the
activity is open to the public. Public events such
as the fish fry, pancake breakfast or Family Fun
Day are great times to show younger family
members what Olivedale is all about. Although
dances are open to the public, for safety issues
there is an age limit of 18 or older to participate.

Fit Tip:
We all know the aging process
brings about structural and
functional changes to the body,
but what exactly can we do to
make the most of our later years
of life? The answer is easy,
exercise, exercise, exercise.
We cannot stop Mother Nature's
clock, but we can slow it down.
Physical activity can help to
promote major health benefits
such as: increased cardiovascular
fitness by 25%; increased
flexibility and muscle strength;
decreased depression; weight loss;
lower blood pressure; reduction of
the risk of heart disease; stronger
immune system; prevention of
bone loss. Here are some tips to get you started:
Decide for yourself why you want
to exercise. An excellent reason is
to maintain good health and
independence. Make a
commitment to exercise on a
regular basis and stick to it!
Always start with a warm-up and
end with cooldown exercises. Do
what is comfortable; stop if you
feel pain. Remember, your
comfort range changes daily, so
don't get discouraged if you can't
do the same amount of exercise as
you did the day before. If, after
exercising, you find that fatigue
or discomfort last longer than two
hours, cut back on your session
the next day but don't stop. Try
limiting the number of repetitions
for that muscle group, then move
on to a different set of muscles.
Don't overwork muscles; don't go
for the burn! Concentrate on
exercises that improves your
range of motion. Accept your
limitations. Instead of focusing on
what you can't do, think about
what you can. The most
important thing to remember is
don't give up!
