One of the teachers teaching in Viet- namese has been teaching in the public school system for more than 20 years. Murdy’s student population is approxi- mately 70% Vietnamese. In 2013, the seeds of the program were planted when the Board of Education requested a feasibility study regarding the expansion of the district’s heritage language programs to be conducted by the California Association of Bilingual Education. Lân Nguyễn, the Board of Education president, states that this program “has been a labor of love to get up and run- ning”. NRCAL’s Director, Dr. Natalie Tran, provided sup- port in developing the scope and sequence for Transitional Kindergarten. The district is the second school district in Orange County, and the 4th in the nation, to bring Viet- namese-English dual language program to children.
