ARRESTS MADE ASCENSION CHURCH FIRE Police have made an arrest following a fire at a church in Salford. At 11.20pm on Sunday 12 February 2017, police were called by the fire service after a fire broke out at the Church of Ascension on Broughton Lane, Lower Broughton. An investiga-tion was launched and officers are treating the incident as arson. A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and has been bailed until 30 March 2017. Detective Sergeant Karl Dalton, of GMP’s Salford Borough, said: “We have tasked a team of detectives with this investigation and made significant progress since the large fire took hold and destroyed the church. “I would like to thank the public for their support which has helped us make some positive steps forward following our appeal for information on Monday. “However, we are continuing to investigate and it is still vital that anyone with infor-mation gets in touch as soon as possible. “In particular, we need to speak with anyone who may have seen a group of youths on bikes near to the church around the time of the fire.” Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 5461 or 101 and quote the reference number 2352 of 12/02/17, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The Claremont and Weaste Neighbourhood team would like to pass on their condolences to the family and friends of Brian Downes. Brian sadly passed away after a long and courageous battle with illness and his funeral took place on 30

th January 2017 at Agecroft Crematorium. Such was his popularity, the

crematorium was completely full with people wishing to pay their respects. Brian has been a leader in our Home Watch schemes and played a large part in the suc-cess of the Smartwater Initiative. He was a reliable and friendly face at our Community Committee meetings and took it up-on himself to organise Bowling tournaments between the local Community and the Neigh-bourhood Police team. Following these good natured events he would arrange refresh-ments, this gave the local community the opportunity to talk to their neighbourhood team and discuss any concerns and issues that were affecting them. Although seriously ill Brian still managed to organise last year’s annual bowling event, which was another success. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Brian, a Neighbourhood Champion and true gen-tleman.

REPORTS OF BOGUS WORKMEN

On the 7th February we received reports of males offering to fix a broken win-dow at an address in Little Hulton. Once inside the address the males asked for a glass of water, the offenders then tried to open drawers in the address to steal items. The males were challenged by the occupants and then left. On the same day we received a further report on folly lane, Swinton males at-tended the address offering to repair Facia boards insisting on a deposit, the victim gave £250 to the offenders stating that’s all the money they had. The offenders then stated they could take the victim to a bank but the victim re-fused. The offenders in this case are described as two white males both with Irish ac-cents. The first offender is described as well built, round face and clean shaved. He wore a brown/ beige coloured jacket and a flat cap. The second offender is described as thin build, long face, short black wavy hair and clean shaven. On Thursday 9th February a further incident occurred on Irlam O’th Height. One male offender targeted an address of an 81 year old occupant. The lone female victim was tricked into giving a £50 deposit to a male who wanted to carry out work on the address. The male took the £50 and left without com-pleting any work. The male was described as 50 years old, stocky build, dark hair, round face and spoke with an Irish accent. We ask resident to please check on their neighbours and relatives and advise them to not open the door to strangers or hand over and cash to persons pur-porting to be workmen. If you have elderly relatives or neighbours close to home ask they have a fam-ily member of friend present if any legitimate and urgent work needs to be car-ried out.
