DEBRA AVERY has been involved in education since 1978 and Montessori education since 1988. She holds a Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Education and 3 Montessori Diplomas from MWEI for ages 3-6 and 6-9 years. During her years in Montessori education, Debra has taught students from the age of 18 months to 12 years. She also has had the roles of Acting Principal at Guildford Montessori School, Senior Teacher at Perth Montessori School and Deputy Principal at Melbourne Montessori School. Debra has a strong interest in literacy and has conducted workshops for Montessori and Independent schools. Debra is a tutor for MWEI and has been involved as a mentor for the MAF Quality Assurance Programme since its inception.

DAVID BARKER has been the Bursar of Barker College for over nine years. As Bursar he has overall responsibility for the School’s Finance, Taxation, Budgeting, Property, IT, Archives, Catering and Facilities. He is also secretary to the School Council and School Foundation. Prior to his working at Barker College, David spent 11 years working for lawyers. Five years as the CFO at Henry Davis York and before that, six years at Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst Australia) as the Financial Controller. David spent 7 years working for two small Chartered Accounting firms in Sydney before moving into commerce. He commenced his career as a trainee manager at Grace Bros Parramatta. David has degrees in Business and Theology and is an FCA and FTI. David was the President of ASBA NSW from 2013 to 2017 and is currently the immediate Past President. He is the Treasurer of ASBA Limited and a co-convenor of the ASBA 2017 National Conference. David enjoys Preaching at St Swithun’s Anglican Church and he also runs, travels and reads.

KAREN BENNETTS has been involved in the Australian Montessori community for over 20 years. She was the founding principal of a Montessori school for ten years and taught children of six to twelve years for eight years. Karen has the AMI 3-6 Diploma, the AMI Orientation to Adolescent Studies as well as two Montessori Diplomas covering the early childhood and primary years from MWEI. She is a graduate of the Company Directors Course at the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is currently completing her PhD in Montessori Leadership at Monash University. Karen was recently granted a State Fellowship Award from the Australian Council of Educational Leaders for her contribution to the field of education.

MICHAEL CARR holds Masters Degrees in Education, Commerce and Labour Law. He has extensive experience within the school environment both as a teacher of Mathematics and as Principal of three large Sydney High Schools. Michael currently holds the position of Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at the Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales (AISNSW). He has previously been Director of Governance and School Reviews, Director of Business Services and Director of Industrial Relations. Michael represents the Independent Schools Council of Australia (ISCA) on a number of national committees.

SUE PYNENBURG has worked as a Bursar/Business Manager for 35 years at schools including Edmund Rice College, Wollongong, SCEGGS Darlinghurst and Sydney Montessori School. As a long term member of the AISNSWBGA Committee she has visited many NSW independent schools and has interacted with a great deal more throughout Australia as the chief editor of ASBA’s Associate magazine. Sue was a director of ASBA State and National Boards and has served as the NSW president, in addition to directorships on the Boards of Edmund Rice College and the Sydney Catholic Superannuation Fund. Sue’s major passion during this has been delivering over $100 million worth of building projects, large and small; all to budget and on time. Sue holds a B.Com and M.Com; is a fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and of CPA Australia; and a director of a building company.

LESTER WILLS is a registered company auditor and chartered accountant with over 18 years experience at Nexia in Australia and the UK. Throughout his career he has had the opportunity to work with a wide selection of clients of various corporate structures and sizes, including those in agriculture, professional services, finance, manufacturing, mining, government, and extensive experience in the education and the wider not-for-profit sector. In his current role with the Independent School sector, Lester acts as engagement partner for financial statement audits, conducts fraud investigations and general IT audits. He also acts in an advisory role to help Schools adopt industry best practices and frameworks to improve efficiencies in day-to-day processes and help enhance their control environment. Lester is the Asia Pacific representative for the Nexia International panel for data mining, analysis and visualisation techniques and heads the Nexia Australia Audit Digitisation group – leading significant change in audit techniques and value delivery for clients.
