Prop Wash By Joanne Nissen

With part of my mind focused on getting myself to Lancaster for the Fall Southwest Section event, the oth-er part is reminded that last year about this time, we as a chapter were readying ourself to host fellow 99s as they arrived in Santa Cruz for the Fall Section AND to celebrate out 50th anniversary as a chapter. With Geneva urging me on, I was baking cookies to stick in the freezer to make certain we had enough for the Hospitality Room.....we had waaaaayyyyy too many cookies (thanks Geneva), however they were distrib-uted thru-out the Chaminade Resort staff, we left folks happy with crumbs on their shirts!! So as we pivot back to regular 99 doings, it was fun to see the excitement of new and ongoing projects/adventures coming up. Future pilot, Sophia has her 99 pin. Perhaps we can convince those two new student pilots from the STEM program to join us.....then Katrina needs to 'properly' join us to gain her pin....and we will grow!! Kay, Carolyn and Laura are going to explore ways to come up with 99 aviation toys for KSBW's Share Your Holidays...how exciting it will be to see all those toys on TV. There is excitement to record more of the oral histories of our members....Carolyn and Alice will see that program gets underway. Look over our minutes to see some of the other subjects we covered. And note, with the minutes appearing in the LOG-BOOK, bring corrections to the meeting as those minutes will not be read, we will simply make any chang-es then vote to approve. Keep your eye on the LOGBOOK as Jeanne will be covering some of these upcoming projects in the news-letter via Committee reporting. When Kay, Carolyn or Laura contact you for some aviation themed toys.....either deliver or throw a few dollars in the kitty to help us reach our goal. Once we get a count on those already collected, we will note how many more we need to gather. Don't forget to support Donna as she heads into her chemo treatments. See the reminder on the upcoming events of the NI-FA event to be held in November at Hillview Airpor t. The International 99s suppor t this ongoing aviation competition between colleges......NIFA can always use help, perhaps a group of us will be able to go up on Thursday or Friday....or both days!! October meeting is back in Watsonville, but you get to come back to Salinas in November!!! If our meet-ing times do not work for you....let me know what would work for you as we are known to deviate from past routines and try something new.....just like ATC giving a new routing!! Blue Skies and Tailwinds, Joanne

MOVIE PREVIEW ON “SULLY” (movie released for viewing September 2016)

On Jan. 15, 2009, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullen-berger (Tom Hanks) tries to make an emergency landing in New York's Hudson River after US Air-ways Flight 1549 strikes a flock of geese. Miracu-lously, all of the 155 passengers and crew survive the harrowing ordeal, and Sullenberger becomes a national hero in the eyes of the public and the me-dia. Despite the accolades, the famed pilot now fac-es an investigation that threatens to destroy his ca-reer and reputation.

NIFA Region II Competition-hosted by San Jose State University I know November is a way off, but I like to give you all a chance to get the dates on the calendar be-fore other events come up. The competition will be held at Reid-Hillview (RHV) east of San Jose from November 15-19, 2016. NIFA has developed a new scoring program and registration for judges. Go to www.nifa.aero/chief-judge/region-2/ and click the link on the right hand side to access the form. It will take a minute or so to fill out. You can also click on the link to Region II competition for more information. Right now, the website is not populated with all the information. San Jose is still finalizing hotel information. I can tell you that Navigation is set for Wednesday, Landings on Thursday and Message Drop on Friday. Of course, as always, weather rules. I know there are names that I missed with this e-mail. Please share the information with your pilot friends, and other 99s in case they would like to join us. Safe Flying, Virginia Harmer NIFA Region II, Chief Judge 909-214-8437

Special Jeppesen chart and binders honor the crew of the "Miracle on the Hudson" US Airways flight 1549

Jeppesen, known in the aviation industry as the worldwide leader in navigation and charting services, recently presented “Miracle on the Hudson” pilots captain Chesley Sullenberger and first-officer Jeffrey Skiles with a specially designed approach chart and engraved Jeppesen chart binders to commemorate the remarkable ditch-ing of US Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River in New York in January 2009.

Entitled “Hudson Miracle APCH,” the one-of-a-kind chart includes several light-hearted notations that honor the famous water landing that saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew on board the flight disabled by bird strikes. In the “briefing strip” section of the chart, instructions include: “After water landing, oversee evacua-tion of ALL SOULS from airplane. Float via HUDSON RIVER to RESCUE point. Once everyone is SAFE aboard rescue boats, secure passenger list and double check cabin. Captain is last to exit. Give THANKS.”

The chart documents the historic five minute flight with a unique graphic, beginning with departure from LaGuardia Airport, followed by a “Cooked Goose Transition” point and “Hudson River Approach,” which is then followed by “Splash” and “Rescue” points on the water. The humorous chart also salutes the career achievements of the crew of flight 1549, including Sullenberger, Skiles, and veteran flight attendants Sheila Dail, Donna Dent and Doreen Welsh.

Along with the commemorative chart, the pilots were presented with a special Jeppesen chart binder, engraved with the famous fortune cookie advice kept in Sullenberger’s flight bag: “A delay is better than a disas-ter.” The items were presented by Mark Van Tine, Jeppesen president and CEO, during the 2010 Gathering of Eagles fundraiser dinner and auction held during the EAA AirVenture fly-in and air show in Oshkosh, Wisc. The EAA Young Eagles event raises funds and awareness for youth involvement in aviation.

About Jeppesen: For more than 75 years Jeppesen has made it possible for pilots and their passengers to safely and efficiently reach their destinations. Today this pioneering spirit continues as Jeppesen delivers essential information and optimization solutions to improve the efficiency of air, sea and rail operations around the globe. Jeppesen is a subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services, a unit of Boeing Commercial Air-planes.

COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU Thank you, everyone, for offering and/or coming out to help before and during the Wings over Watsonville (WOW) event. Without you, it would have been difficult to set-up & take-down the Ninety-Nines booth, sell items, and register pilots. A special “thank you” to Mike Barnett who did the heavy mov-ing of the booth parts during the “take-down.” Also, a special “thank you” to Emily, Sophia’s sister who made airplane necklaces and donated them to our fundraiser.

HUDSON MIRACLE APPROACH Note the “Cooked Goose Transition” This is a one-time deviation from Jeppesen’s seriousness and an opportunity to invoke humor to an otherwise dangerous water landing.
