Montbeliarde crossbred: nearly 50% more lifetime profit than pure holstein
California trials confirm advantage of Montbeliarde crossbred.Dairy producers can improve the survival of cows and profitability by crossing pure Holsteincows with Montbeliarde bulls.
Better survival, better lifetime productionAll crossbred groups had a greater percentage of cows calve a second, third and fourth time than pureHolsteins. For example, only51% of pure Holstein cows calved a third time, whereas the corresponding figure was 75% for the Montbeliarde x Holstein cross-breds.
As a consequence of greater survival, crossbreds had 4,805 kg higher lifetime milk production than pure Holsteins. The lifetimeproduction of fat and protein was also highest in the crossbreds.
Fertility and udder healthThe crossbred animals were constantly superior to the Holsteins for fertility, mainly due to reduced calving difficulty and stillbirth. Moreover, crossbreds had fewer days to first breeding, higher pregnancy rates and fewer days open than the pure Holstein cows.Somatic cell scores were also lower for the Montbeliarde x Holstein crossbreds than for pure Holsteins.
+49.5% more lifetime profitMontbeliarde x Holstein cows had 50% greater lifetime profit per cow than pure Holstein cows. The additional profit per day on anannual basis was $80 for Montbeliarde x Holstein cows compared to pure Holsteins. To define lifetime profit, the range of differentpossible revenues and expenses were included such as production of milk, fat and protein as well as somatic cell count, reproduc-tion, feed intake, calf value, salvage value, dead cow disposal, fixed costs and interest cost. The researchers say that calculatedlifetime profit for crossbreds might be even higher than estimated, because the data on health costs were not provided by the herdowners in California.

The final results from California crossbreedingtrials had become available for wide publicdistribution, because they were published in theFebruary issue of the Journal of Dairy Science –the most respected source of scientificinformation for the global dairy industry. In thetrial, performance of 416 pure Holstein cows wascompared with that of 503 Montbeliarde xHolstein and 321 Scandinavian Red x Holsteincrossbreds.Previous results from the Californiacrossbreeding trials focused only on the firstlactations of cows, while the final results showedeffect of crossbreeding on fertility, somatic cellscore, production, survival and profitabilitythroughout their lifetimes.

Klein Dairy Farm, Be'erotaim, Israel144 Cows, 2X, 365 days, 11.559 kg 3,68%F3,36%P, 116 open days.Montbeliarde, a clear Benefit for Klein FamilyIsrael is world famous for sofisticated dairysystems, providing huge milk yield per cow. Aseverywhere, health traits are becoming more ofan issue, and it is not a surprise that Israelleads in terms of cooling systems or activitysensors technology, such as heat detectors, largely sold today in many countries to solvefertility problems. At Klein dairy Farm, it is the same exigence in term ofmanagement and production level, but it is done in a different genetic way. In1998, Dad Menachm started to partly crossbreed his israelian Holsteins withMontbeliarde semen, the idea being to get some more health and fertility backinto the herd. 6 years ago, the results were good enough to launch himselfalong with son Aric into 100 % 3-breed rotational crossbreeding includingmontbeliarde. According to Klein family, the benefits have been significant inmany aspects : easier calvings meaning less stillbirth and transition problems, reduction of nearly 30% of drug use, huge increase in fertility (open days downto 116 days while national average is 145) with also 1,7 dosis per pregnancyinstead of 2,7 dosis national average. All those benefits together allowed theherd to even increase milk production by 2% per year as average days in milkalso decreased. For a 2X milking, quite unusual in Israel, but more costeffective, average production has climbed to 11.559 kg in 2011, with anexcellent protein level of 3,36% allowing a bonus in term of milk price.David Dror, Coopex agent and genetic adviser for Klein family makes thiscom-ment : "In Israel, Holstein breed is also facing fertility and health issues, confir-med by national datas but also by the technology developped here to try to avoidthose problems. But Israel is no different from the USA or other countries in termof crossbreeding, with Montbeliarde and other breeds. Datas show that crossesare also far superior for health and fertility traits with similar production. This is aclear benefit for any dairy farmers in the world, such as the Klein family in Israel".
Fundo Santa Angela,Río Negro, Osorno, Chile(Owner Pablo y Mauricio Momberg)
Pablo and Mauricio Momberg manage 320Montbeliarde cows on a pasture-basedsystem for most of the year, with silage andlimited grain feeding during winter. Pablo hasbeen one of the pioneers in using Montbe-liarde semen in 1996. Going progressively to a100% purebred Montbeliarde herd, theowners could duplicate their milk productionper hectare, rising from 6000 to 12900 kg/ha,exceeding a total of 2,3 million per year.Protein levels also increased to reach 3,7%Pas well as butterfat to 4,2%F with somaticcells not exceeding 150.000 Cel/ml. All theirmilk is sold to a cheese plant achieving a highprice due do its evident quality.Reproduction is not less important as anaverage of 1,5 dosis/conception shows howfertility is kept at a good level.Mauricio Momberg adds that all male calvesare fattened on land that can not be used bythe dairy herd. This offers again an aditionalincome to the dairy.

145 cows. Organic milk, Montbeliarde is a natural fit at Johannes and Madeleine.Denmark organic milk production is among the most developped in Europe with more than 10% milk nationally produced beingorganic, representing as much as 30% of fluid milk consumed. Thybogaard dairy Farm is managed by Johannes Jensen andMadeleine Lorne that is originated from France."In organic dairying, health and fertility are prime obligations as we have strict restrictions in terms of medicine use. It also requiresspecific traits in term of genetics used on our farm" says Johannes whose conversion to organic dated from 1995. Montbeliarde hasdefinitely several traits needed for organic milking : good udder health, excellent fertility from their strength and body condition.Grazing qualities and locomotion are also key in our pasture-based system. From a genetic base of Red Dane, Madeleine and Johannes implemented several years ago a crossbreeding system, whereMontbeliarde genetics is used on strategic matings, correcting usually body condition and strength on frail cows. Madeleineadds that their current production level has gone down this year for feed quality issues to 7.500 kg/cow at 4,1%F and 3,42%Pbut their goal is to come back at 8.700 kg as previously reached during years. In term of reproduction, Madeleine's charge andpassion, the herd is averaging an outstanding 365 day between calvings. This excellent results leads every year to 30 extraheifers sold on the organic market.
MONTAGRO Sp. Z.o.o, Lubycza Krolewska, PolandWhen productivity and longevity go together!81% of the heifers bought in 2005 from Coopex Montbeliarde are still in production 7 years later. Montagro farm is the biggestpure Montbeliarde herd in Poland with 220 cows. The herd was created in 2005 with 126 pregnant heifers coming from CoopexMontbeliarde (FRANCE). During the three last years, the average milk yield always increases:
2009: 9.445kg, 4.29%F, 3.59%P in 305 days2010: 9.565kg, 3.87%F, 3.60%P in 305 days2011: 9.761kg, 3.87%F, 3.49%P in 305 days
Marcin Stachowicz, the farm manager says: “We choose the Montbeliarde breed because even with high milk production, we are ableto minimize costs. From our economical point of view, the Montbeliarde breed is the best one: among the 126 pregnant heifers bought in2005 from COOPEX MONTBELIARDE, we still have 103 of them in milk production today (inApril 2012) 7 years after their arrival on our farm. Now the Montbeliarde longevity isdefinitely proven in Poland. Our culling rate is at 12%, mastitis cases are below than 3% andour vet costs are around 28 euros/cow/year.”Montbeliarde cows stay last longer in the herd with an excellent potential to producehigh milk quantity of a very good quality. Below are the figures of the five best cows ofthe herd in 2011:
Van Zeeland Farm, HollandWith Monties, we make a good living !
Van Zeeland farms in the south of Holland milks pureMontbeliardes. They started crossbreeding their RedHolsteins 12 years ago. Since then, they only used Monties.Albert was not satisfied with the quality of the feed and legsand longevity of his Holsteins. "Montbeliardes have a strongwill to keep performing. Mentally they are very strong, if they aresick, they production lower for a day but the next day they areback in business, whereas the Holsteins stop eating and get frailbecause they keep giving milk. Montbeliardes are "diesel"cows:strong and efficient. Every year we need to buy silage-maize sowe are keen on feeding costs. We only give 1.000 kg concen-trates per cow per year. In this system, Monties perform withlower input and labour costs. Currently, our barns areovercrowded and we lackgood grass. Neverthelessour Montbéliardes arefree from problems.Within the breed, we usethe top-sires. Our K&Ladvisor makes themattings. With our lowcost system and the extrasales of beef we make.agood living."
Dairy Farm El Sella - Torreon - MEXICOEl Sella Dairy Farm, Torreon,Mexico.1230 cows, 3X, avg. 35kg/dayFernando Fernandez and his sonPedro are very representative ofmodern dairying in NorthernMexico, using the latest technologyin term of management andnutrition. But, if there's an aspectwhere they are more progressivethan others, it is in term of genetics.Several years ago, sharing informa-tion with a dairy farmer from centralMexico (G. Suarez), Fernando andhis son Pedro decided to use Montbeliarde genetics in a 3-waycrossbreeding on their original Holstein herd.Pedro Fernandez comments : "we wanted to improve ourfertility and longevity in our herd, for obvious profit reasons. Infirst hand, montbeliarde semen is used on Holstein cows withfertility problems, and it definitely allows more cows to becomepregnant. Then, we are seeing our first Montbeliarde-Holstein inproduction with very good levels, and importantly (no problem intheir first part of lactation) probably due to their better bodycondition. We are confident that those crosses will bring uslongevity and more profit"
