Why did you choose this book?
Most readers can relate to family secrets, hidden longing, and loneliness. The accessibility of Ng’s main themes will allow us to easily interface with different
populations across the community, from high schools to retirees.
Ng’s work also stood out because it eerily mirrors Bloomington and Monroe County. As a mid-sized college town, Bloomington is uniquely cosmopolitan
compared to the surrounding area. Our sizable Asian and Asian-American student population creates a notable demographic distinction. The challenges that the
Lee family faces with fitting in should prove relevant to our community’s international populations and eye-opening to domestic readers.
In many communities, including college towns, the pressure parents place on their children to succeed and teen depression can be found. Time, November 7, 2016
feature article on the topic, began the piece with a young woman who cut herself to achieve “a momentary escape from the anxiety she was fighting constantly,
about grades, about her future, about relationships, about everything.” (p.44) This could describe Ng’s Lydia.
Please describe your community where programming will take place.

Organization Description
Describe your organization’s history, programming, and achievements.
For 51 years, the Monroe County Public Library Foundation (dba Friends of Monroe County Public Library) have
supported the mission, vision, and values of the Library. The Friends advocate for Monroe County Public Library and
support library collections, services, programs, and staff development. The Friends operate a successful used Bookstore in
the Main Library generating more than $90,000 in annual revenue. They have an active volunteer Board of Directors with
21 members. They employ a full-time office manager with an office in the Library Administration as well as a Bookstore
manager. The Friends donate more than $100,000 each year to the Library. About 800 households consider themselves
“Friends of the Library” with their memberships and donations to our annual Campaign for Excellence. We partner with
local restaurants to offer a monthly Dine Out for the Library. We offer four Coffee with Friends programs each year and
an annual meeting open to the public featuring a local author guest speaker. The Friends also advocate for the Library and
encourage community literacy by bringing nationally recognized, award-winning authors and their works to the
community in the form of a biannual event called Power of Words.
Describe your organization’s experience with presenting community-wide programming that demonstrates an ability to
conduct a successful NEA Big Read.
The Power of Words: Changing Our World—One Author at a Time is a bi-annual author event presented by the Friends
of the Library in partnership with Monroe County Public Library. The program’s mission is to create a visible community
of readers by hosting an author writing on important topics of our time—and more specifically, topics that speak to the
average citizen’s ability to positively change the world in which we live. The program started in 2007 with a visit by
nationally acclaimed novelist, poet, and storyteller, Luis Alberto Urrea. Subsequently, the Friends hosted Rick Bragg
(2009), James McBride (2011), Nicole Mones (2013), and Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell for
their award-winning March series (2015). Our Power of Words events have been centered around the principles of Read,
Discuss, and Meet, with a month of related programming leading up to the main author talk. In 2015, we added Act to
those principles, partnering with local schools and organizations to bring the authors’ work to as many people as possible.
We extended our reach further into the community in 2015 establishing new partnerships, inviting them to join the
community conversation through book discussions, wisdom circles, film series, art talks and exhibits, and more. Having
gotten a taste of what is possible, these partners are excited to get more involved and reach more people through the Big
Read in 2017. For the first time in 2015 we created an interactive calendar on the website featuring the community events,
and provided biographies, videos about the books, lists of recommended books, music, and movies, and event
information, and resources for teachers and parents to discuss the issues. The Library received the 2016 Indiana Library
Federation Programming Award for this event. Reviewers were impressed with the breadth of programming, website, and
number of people attending an author talk. John Lewis shared this was the best organized event he had been a part of.

Project Description
Describe your programming plans in detail. Provide details on the types of activities, target audiences for those activities,
locations, and intended dates. Explain how your activities will engage audiences with your selected book.
For Monroe County’s NEA Big Read 2017 we will continue building on the success of The Friends of the Library and
Monroe County Public Library’s biannual event, The Power of Words: Changing Our World—One Author at a Time.
Since 2007 the Friends and the Library have supported a community-wide reading initiative that has culminated with the
author giving a free talk. This year’s selection is the Big Read title Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. This
gripping and sensitive family portrait about the immigrant and bi-racial American experience provides an excellent
opportunity to explore important issues in our University town. We expect these topics to resonate as our community
grapples with issues of diversity and the town-and-gown divide.
We will kick off the Big Read during the annual Lotus World Music & Arts Festival, September 28–October 1 with an
evening musical showcase and presentation of the Big Read selection with our key partners. The Lotus Festival has
presented artists from 120+ countries over the past 23 years and attracts 12,000+ people yearly. In addition, we will host a
booth Saturday, Sept 30 at the free Lotus in the Park with crafts and activities for children, as well as information about all
Big Read events and copies of Everything I Never Told You available for pick up. Lotus has chosen a theme of
“Storytelling” through music and art for this year’s festival and is very excited to partner with us.
The highlight of our 2017 Big Read will be our Power of Words event; an evening with Celeste Ng at the historic
Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington. This free public event will give the community the opportunity to
meet the author of our Big Read selection. The Library’s award-winning Community Access Television Services will tape
the event and air it live on television and live streamed online, as well as broadcast it for weeks following the event.
Leading up to Celeste Ng’s visit will include a variety of programs, highlighted by book discussions of Everything I
Never Told You and related titles. The Library will host and coordinate a dozen book discussions for the general public
and special groups, including senior centers, City government, local businesses, and nonprofits. The Library will add the
book to its popular Book Club Kits To Go, making multiple copies of the book, along with discussion resources, available
for checkout for area book clubs. The Library will coordinate and host a film series and children and teen programs with
discussions of related, age-appropriate titles including Harriet, the Spy which was a favorite book of Ng and inspired the
youngest character, Hannah, in Everything I Never Told You.
We are working with Indiana University, Ivy Tech Community College, the City of Bloomington, and other partners to
host arts, cultural, and discussion Big Read programs in the 6-weeks leading up to the evening with Ng. We are partnering
with several groups at IU, including the Asian American Association and Asian Culture Center, to host discussions related
to Ng’s book, which fits well with IU’s themester topic: Diversity, Difference, Otherness. The City of Bloomington will
host Wisdom Circles, where elders from the Asian-American community discuss their experiences with younger
residents. Local theater groups are planning cultural events, including discussions of otherness with public school students
around Cardinal Stage Company’s presentation of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and a Monroe County Civic Theater radio
dramatization of scenes from Ng’s book in conjunction with WFHB our community radio station. Women Writing for a
Change is planning writing programs on family and race, and partnering with New Leaf, New Life to bring the program to
women incarcerated in the County. Bloomington Cooking School will host a themed program for the book. The Friends
and Library are also planning arts programs and talks with the IU Art Museum as part of its Museum Without Walls
series.

Monroe County Public Library, with a million annual visits & 73,000 cardholders, supports outreach to underserved
populations in the community. The Library, a partner with the Friends on 5 successful Power of Words author events, will
take the lead on programming and publicity for the Big Read, working in close collaboration with the Friends Committee.
Community Access Television Services broadcasts on 5 cable channels, will produce our video promotions, and film &
broadcast the keynote event. Confirmed.
The City of Bloomington will host Big Read events including wisdom circles with grant purchased books and book
discussions for city employees. A city official will coordinate these events. The mayor will help kick off the Big Read at
Lotus Festival. The City is particularly suited for reaching underserved populations and bringing various community
organizations and resources together. Confirmed.
Lotus Education & Arts Foundation uses music and the arts to explore global diversity. Their main event is the Lotus
World Music & Arts Festival where we will hold the kick-off event for the Big Read. Confirmed.
Indiana University Themester is a program designed to provide 45,000+ students & the community with a cross-
disciplinary exposure to issues. The Themester 2017 theme engages diversity by considering how “otherness” has been
constructed through time and space including how it is represented in literature, allowing us an opportunity to cross-
promote events and bridge the gap, promoting dialogue between the university and county residents. Confirmed.
Cardinal Stage Company, a professional theatre in Bloomington, offers high-quality productions in tandem with outreach
and educational initiatives. Building on the community conversation of “otherness,” Cardinal will offer a new adaptation
of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein from Oct 26-Nov 5 with their Cardinal for Schools initiative allowing school classes to
attend performances while discussing the issues in the play in their classrooms. Confirmed.
Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, the largest church in the county with 14,000 members including a Spanish language
service, will offer a panel discussion for the community encouraging a dialogue of what it is like to be an international
family here. Confirmed.
Monroe County Civic Theater, Bloomington’s only amateur community theater organization, will create a radio
dramatization from Everything I Never Told You to be broadcast on community radio station WFHB. Confirmed.
Lifelong Learning, serving as an outreach arm of Indiana University, will create a noncredit course featuring 2 guest
speakers to provide enhanced knowledge and perspectives on the issues raised in Ng’s book. Participants attend 2 evening
courses and the keynote author lecture. Confirmed.
Women Writing for (a) Change® Bloomington will organize creative writing opportunities to explore the book’s issues.
They may provide related workshops with women in Monroe County Jail, providing us an opportunity to reach women
from a broad range of ages and backgrounds. Pending.
Since cooking plays a role in Ng’s book, Bloomington Cooking School will host a themed class from Everything I Never
Told You. Confirmed.
Indiana University Art Museum will bring a Big Read focused program for their “Museum Without Walls” to the Library.
Confirmed.
The Library is the center for nonprofit organizations in the County, providing meeting space and resources through our
Nonprofit Central. We will invite organizations and businesses to a Big Read informational meeting where they can learn
about hosting book discussions and programs related to the book’s themes. The Big Read Grant will allow us to offer free
copies of the book for those who organize Big Read programs for their constituencies. This will allow the Big Read to be
a collaborative experience for the entire community, reach a broader audience, and utilize the resources and creative
talents of diverse organization

Promotional Description
(a) Describe how you will promote your programming. Discuss any proposed or existing partnerships with specific media
outlets. (b) Explain how your program will utilize the digital resources found on neabigread.org, and copies of your
reading selection.
Monroe County Public Library’s award-winning Communications & Marketing Department will create and execute a
marketing plan built around the core idea of empowering our Big Read partners to extend our reach to the community.
Through a package of digital and print materials, along with display concepts and talking points, our various partners will
have ready-to-go publicity at their fingertips. In addition, they will create and push out a large-scale video publicity plan.
Our digital campaign will be essential to reaching new audiences and enabling community members to discover the
variety of programs and book discussions being offered, learn more about our author Celeste Ng, find where free copies of
the book are available, and find enriching materials related to the various topics explored in the novel Everything I Never
Told You. The core of the digital campaign will be a comprehensive, interactive website providing easy to find
information about the Big Read. In concert with the website will be ready-to-go graphics and text for the Library and
partner’s social media accounts and eNewsletters with core information and directing people to the website. These tools
will also be deployed for community members to share on their own personal social media accounts—word of mouth is
always our greatest marketing tool.
Echoing our comprehensive digital campaign and website will be a variety of print materials, which will be distributed
through the Library, our partners, and area businesses and nonprofits. Print products will include a dedicated program
guide, bookmarks, palm cards, posters, and flyers. In addition, the Library will feature these print products alongside
visual merchandising displays in the Library highlighting Ng’s book and other read-a-likes for all audiences and related
topics. The Library will also feature giant advertisements installed on the outside of the Main Library in the center of
downtown. These display elements will also be available to partners to build their own displays. For instance, the City of
Bloomington will build a large display in City Hall.
The Library’s Communications & Marketing Department will also handle media relations, producing press releases and
multimedia content for media partners and local radio stations, newspapers, and magazines. Video content will be
produced and featured on the Library’s community access TV channel, online, and featured in a large-scale campaign at
Bloomington’s two movie theater complexes. For the 13 weeks leading up to our main event with Celeste Ng, a 30-second
video spot will be run before every movie on all 23 movie screens for a total of 8,372 showings. In addition, TV screens
in the lobby of the movie theaters will run the video spot every 12 minutes, for a total of 88,602 impressions. We expect
this messaging to reach new audiences across our entire community.
To support the Big Read and encourage active partner participation, we plan to purchase a minimum of 1,000 copies of
Everything I Never Told You to be distributed throughout the community. All active partners will be given copies to
support their programming and display initiatives, as well as any in-house reading discussions they organize. The Friends
and Library will plan outreach events to discuss the Big Read and give away free copies of the book, including at the
Library’s Bookmobile stops in rural areas of our county and through outreach programs already designed to reach new
audiences and audiences with barriers to accessing traditional Library services with our outreach van, homebound service,
and new this fall, a book bike funded by the Friends to deliver services on the go. Every free copy of the book will contain
a bookplate on the inside cover detailing the Big Read event and highlighting the website, as well as containing a printed
insert with discussion questions and other resources to enrich the reading experience.
