MONEYCaracas. Lianza. Verbo.Money is an essential component of trade and commerce which in turn are important aspects of human history. Then, it is an important current which runs through the stream of history. Its story is a reflection of humanity itself.

The first philippine republicPresident Emilio Aguinaldo issued a decree on November 20 1898 which provided the issuance of paper money. Notes of one, two, five, fifty, and one hundred pesos were issued, and they carry the signature of Pedro A. Paterno, who was the Secretary of Interior that time.After Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo was captured, the American authorities declared these illegal and was destroyed.

RESISTANCE CURRENCIESMore popularly known as guerilla notes, was issued by many provincial and municipal authorities during the Japanese occupation to finance the resistance. These notes show the difficult situations and dangerous conditions in which they were printed and used.

AMERICAN OCCUPATIONThe first series contained the signature of the American Governor General Frank Murphy (the last American Governor General who served the Philippines)and the second series contained Pres. Manuel Quezons signature.

CENTRAL BANK NOTESThe CBP started to circulate notes with portraits of Filipino heroes and past presidents. They were called the Pilipino series.

Central bank notesDuring Martial Law, Presidential decree No. 168 was issued replacing the Pilipino Series. They were called the Ang Bagong Lipunan Series, and was an improved version of the first one.

Today, all of the Philippines new money designs are made at the Bangko Sentral ng PilipinasIn making their proposals, the artists use these motifs and forms:Rosettes flower like formsLace work designVignettes important events or landmarksColor SchemePortraitsThe designs of bills and coins embody what a government wishes to project about its country visions to ensure a better life for all. Since money is very much associated with economic matter, industrial images such as field of crops, oil rigs, and factories are usually in the designs. Other symbols such as flags and government buildings are meant to bring the people together by implying allegiance or heritage.
