A SPECIAL INVITATION TO THOSE WHO USE TO ADVERTISEIN THE TRI-STATE PENNYSAVER

Many of us were saddened to learn that the Tri-state Pennysaver willno longer be serving the Southern Vermont, Eastern New York, andNorthern Massachusetts areas. It has been confirmed that The Tri-state Pennysaver will no longer be publishing as of Dec 23, 2014. As many of you know, our papers have been serving the Eastern NewYork, and Southern Vermont areas for over 62 years. Only recently,we moved into Northern Massachusetts. Our readership is extremelyhigh, with many loyal customers. Therefore, we extend this invitationto all businesses who have been doing business with The Tri-satePennysaver to join our team in our efforts to impart information onyour behalf to our 60,000 readers. In addition, we will do our best topublish the many community events and fund drives sponsored by lo-cal businesses and not-for-profit organizations. As many of you know,we offer reduced rates to not-for-profit organizations for guaranteedpublication of events. Otherwise, those events are published free on a"first come, first serve, space available (we cannot guarantee publish-ing)" basis. We will need your help. Please share our message with the folkswho hold or host events in the greater SW Vermont, Eastern NY &NW Mass area. Please send your event information to:[email protected] no later than the Friday before theweek of any event. We suggest sending that information two Fridaysbefore the event to maximize the probability of publishing. Those of you who wish to advertise may send your information to

that same email address or call Brian at 802-549-4637 or 518-747-9535. If you haven't tried us before, now is the time to see what wecan do for you, even in this dismal economy. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year, from allof us at The Vermont Moneysaver Group.

Reflections: Memories of Christmas PastWritten by Rachel Essaff Maher

When I was a young girl, my family had so many neat traditions thatmade Christmas special. My sister, Elaina, and I would always try tosneak a peek at Santa. Every year, we would huddle together on Christ-mas Eve and think up new ways to keep from falling asleep and newplaces to hide so that Santa would not see us lying in wait for him.

One year, we were convinced that we could finally catch him if we could manage toboth stay awake longer than our parents and hide between the couch and the wall, wherewe would be crammed and jammed together, but would have the perfect vantage pointfrom which to observe the Claus. Needless to say, we never did catch the guy. Stayingawake was much too difficult. On Christmas morning, my older brother, Justin, would creep down the hall and into myroom, where he would wake Elaina and me up before sneaking off to wake up our othersister, Casey, and brother, Jared, in the next room. For some reason, Elainas and myroom was the unofficially designated meeting spot back then, and all five of us kidswould gather there at around 3:00 am and discuss whether or not it was truly too earlyto wake our parents. After much debate and closer to 4:00 am, Justin would stand andannounce that we had waited long enough.Standing there in the middle of the room with his hands on his hips while the rest of ussat on the beds, Justin was our Tom Sawyer, full of guts and glory. None of us had hiskind of courage, but the moment he said it was time, well, it was time. And so we fivewould crowd together in the doorway of our parents bedroom, listening to the tick-tock of our fathers watch as it scolded us from its place on his dresser. Shuffling intothe room as one mass of children united, we would nudge one another until Justinwould reach out a hand, tentatively, timidly evenand gently touch our mothers shoulderas though she were a sleeping lioness. One eye would crack open. Mom. Momits Christmas. Justin would whisper. Then she would sigh. And all at once, we would all start begging to go downstairs andopen presents, momentarily forgetting that the lioness slept beside the lion, his greatbody turning beneath the blankets, becoming a massive form in the darkness as he grog-gily turned his back to us. Then our father would grumble in his sleep-roughened voice,Five oclock. You can wait until five oclock. Once the command had been issued, there was no point in fighting it, and we would slump back to my bedroom in defeat.I cannot remember how we passed that terrible, slow sixty minutes, but somehow wemanaged to get to 5:00 am without going mad. And our father would slip out of his bedat the appointed hour, slink down the stairs ahead of everyone, turn on the Christmastree lights, and put on the Christmas With Conniff record. Our mother would assembleus at the top of the stairs so that Dad could snap a picture of us as we came down thestairs and saw the bounty of Christmas before us.That moment, that photographed moment frozen in time, was the most magical part of the entire Christmas experience for all of us. Looking at year after year of our stair-way photos, even today I am filled with that spark of wonder and excitement that I feltso long ago. I recall everything about Christmas morning as though it just happened:the anticipation of Santa; the curiosity and plotting to stay awake; the sound of Justintelling me to wake up (Its Christmas, Rach! Its Christmas!); the agony of waiting forour folks to get up; and the sideways glances at my siblings as we made our ways downthose stairs, glimpsing in each other the same joy and wonder and thrill of holidayspirit as we took that final step and brought Christmas morning into view.

BUDGET BASICS FOR TIGHT MARGINS The up, down and relatively flat outlook for 2015crop input costs. Projected lower commodity prices in 2015 will bring challenges farmers haventexperienced for several years. There wil l be opportunities, too. Now is the time to ti ghten budgetbelts and explore ways to offset low market prices and high input costsall while maintainingyields. The first step to evaluating input costs is to determine the most profitable crop rotation in avolatile market. From 2007 to 2013, Purdue University research showed soybeans were less com-petitive than corn. Michael Langemeier, associate director for Purdue Universitys Center for Com-mercial Agriculture, says this trend has re-versed. Input costs for soybeans in 2015should stay relatively flat compared to a 3%to 4% increase in corn input costs due tonitrogen, drying and miscellaneous costs.Land rent: Todays average cash rents are

causing a cost-price squeeze in the wakeof sluggish crop prices. Rents negotiatedthis summer and fall are likely heading lowerfor 2015, predicts Gary Schnitkey, Univer-sity of Illinois Extension farm managementspecialist. Farmland rents will likely be $10per acre lower in 2015 to start a three-yearadjustment process. Knowing crop margins will be tight, Langemeier recommends farmers sitdown with their landlords to renegotiate a 5% to 10% decline in cash rents.Fuel: Diesel prices are expected to see a slight decrease in early 2015 and stay relatively flatthroughout the year at an average $3.80 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Adminis-tration. The EIA forecasts propane prices to be $1.99 per gallon this winter (Oct. 1 to March 31).Thats a 23.8% decrease from last winter s $2.61 per gallon, the highest price in years.Seed: If buying an established hybrid or variety, Langemeier says, seed prices will likely remainflat or increase 1%. However, if purchasing a new variety or hybrid, you might see a 2% to 4%increase. For perspective, for the past 40 years, seed costs have increased 4.5% per year, accord-ing to USDANational Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).Pesticide : For 2015, pesticides will see a relatively small increase at 2% to 3%. Similar to seed, since 1973, agriculture chemicals have increased 2.5% per year, according to USDA-NASS.Fertilizer: Overall, fertilizer prices will be up slightly from 2014 but down compared to 2012 and2013. Langemeier sees nitrogen as the driving force behind higher costs. Research shows nitrogenfor corn up 3% and for soybeans, up 1%. According to Steve Johnson, Iowa State UniversityExtension farm management specialist, anhydrous ammonia prices in October were about $100 perton higher than fall 2013. For the past three or four years, Noland Farms, Blue Mound, Ill., has beenable to offset costs by purchasing dry and liquid fertilizer and storing it on-site. This enables thefarm to move up on the supply chain and capture opportunit ies through the supplier. The Nolandstypically purchase bulk fertilizer in late July, but this year, they thought the market might soften, sothey waited until the end of September.Having our dry and liquid fertilizer on-hand, allows usflexibility on use and the ability to capture marketopportunities, says Grant Noland.I expect farmers are going to t ry to reduce fertilizer, crop pro-tection and seed costs by being more efficient as to what, where and how much they apply,Johnson says. The advantages go to those farmers who soil test regularly and have already in-vested in precision technology, including planters, sprayers, spreaders and autosteer. These compo-nents will likely be the biggest drivers in reducing variable costs of production. The Nolands havebeen using variable-rate technology and continue to see rewards on an annual basis. Byapplying the right amount of product in the right spots, the Nolands are boosting input efficiencies.Ourfertility rates are great r ight now, and moving into 2015, we will continue building our soil bank,Noland says. You start skimping on your fertility, and it will have a negative impact on yield atsome point.
