FROM FATHER TERRY J+M+J

“Peace be with you.” Jn 20:19. On the evening of Easter Sunday, these are the powerful words that the risen Christ speaks to his disciples. Today, Jesus speaks these same words to each of us. We can always use peace, especially in these challenging times. But what does Jesus mean by peace? The word that he uses for peace is the Hebrew, “shalom,” which means peace, harmony, wholeness, tranquility. In fact, shalom is commonly used as hello or goodbye. However, Jesus transcends the common meaning of the word shalom. For him, sha-lom is a deep inner peace which comes from knowing the Easter Christ, knowing that our sins are forgiven, knowing that we have eternal life. This kind of peace is revolutionary. It has no conditions. That is, it is so profound that we can have it in all circumstances. It is sad to see how we can search for Jesus’ peace in what the world offers and we are never satisfied.

We are called to enter more deeply into the shalom of Jesus. I think the coronavirus has caused us to realize what is most important, God and others. Crisis situations have a way of refocusing our hearts very fast. We are primed to enter into Jesus’ gift of peace. We will encounter this gift through such things as prayer, reading the Resurrection narratives found at the end of each of the Gospels, charity, being men and women of joy, and wishing people a “Happy Easter!” for the 50 days of the Easter season.

We as Catholics are often very good at Lent. That is, we develop game plans for 40 days and it seem to be the talk of the town. But what about the 50 days of Easter? What is our game plan for entering into Jesus’ peace and proclaiming that peace to the world? The world needs the deep inner peace that comes with following the risen Lord. In the end, Easter is the time to encounter the shalom of Jesus. As we do this, like St. Thomas, we will boldly proclaim to Jesus and to the entire world, “My Lord and my God!”

The Second Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. The Divine Mercy of Jesus was pro-moted by a Polish nun, St. Faustina Kowalska, who lived from 1905-1938. St. Faustina received private reve-lations of Jesus in order to promote the Divine Mercy. There are various devotions associated with Divine Mercy, including a novena that can be said anytime of the year, especially beginning on Good Friday. There is also a chaplet, which is prayed each day on EWTN at 3 p.m., the hour of mercy. The devotion further includes a sacred image of Jesus with the words, “Jesus, I Trust in You,” which reminds us to trust in his mercy. All are welcome to pray our livestream chaplet this Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m.

I hope all of you are having a blessed Easter. Many of you have joined us for our livestream Masses during Holy Week. For our two Easter Masses, we had a combined total of about 4,000 people. Wow, that is beauti-ful! I thank you for all the kind compliments in relation to our livestreaming. I thank you for your patience over the last few weeks as we dealt with various technological issues. I think we now have it moving on a smooth pathway. We especially thank Fr. Pius for his expertise and for filming all the celebrations. The clergy team has bonded in a wonderful way by being together for many of the Masses/liturgies. However, we do miss you. We wish you were here with us! Church is not the same without you. I think the coronavirus has made us all better appreciate how things were. It is my prayer that we will return back to normal soon. Also, please continue to check the website for updates, including various prayer opportunities in addition to the Masses.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

All are invited to pray along with our livestream of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy today, 4/19, at 3:00 P.M.

If you were born well before the year 2000, you know the feast of Divine Mercy has not always been celebrated in the Church. In the early 1900s, a young Polish nun began receiving private revelations. Jesus appeared to her during her times of prayer, speaking a message of mercy and love for the world. She received a set of prayers — the Divine Mercy Chaplet — and the request to have a feast day established to remind the Church of the mercy of God. St. Faustina died in 1938, on the cusp of war and in the midst of one of the most violent centuries in the history of the world.

Her story and her diaries began circulating in Poland and beyond. It quickly became apparent that this was a holy young women, and the cause for her canonization opened. In the year 2000, she was canonized by the first-ever Polish pope, St. John Paul II. On her canonization day, he established the second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday, “a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind with experience in the years to come.

When it is impossible to go to Confession, forgiveness of both venial and mortal sins is possible through an Act of Perfect Contrition. An Act of Perfect Contrition is a prayer of repentance motivated by love for God, with a sincere request for forgiveness and a firm resolution to make a sacramental Confession to a priest as soon as it becomes possible. The wording of the prayer isn’t what needs to be perfect. The perfection is in the sincerity of the person’s love for God, sorrow for their sins and determination to turn away from sin. There is no set wording for an Act of Perfect Contrition. Any prayer of contrition will be sufficient if it is offered from the right motives. Here is a suggested prayer:

UNABLE TO GO TO CONFESSION?

“My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned

against You, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your

help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.”

Amen

PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that in order “to ensure that the faithful would observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence…so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit. In this way, they can foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God’s pardon, they in turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters.”

The plenary indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the Our Father and the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!).

Additional provisions are offered for those who are impeded from fulfilling these requirements, but who wish to acquire a plenary indulgence. The full text of the decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary may be found at: www.mercysunday.com.

HOW TO RECITE THE CHAPLET

The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. Optional Opening Prayers

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. (Repeat three times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!

3. Our Father

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heav-en. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

4. Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

5. The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

6. The Eternal Father

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

7. On the 10 Small Beads of Each Decade

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

8. Repeat for the remaining decades

Saying the "Eternal Father" (6) on the "Our Father" bead and then 10 "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (7) on the following "Hail Mary" beads.

9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times)

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

10. Optional Closing Prayer

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and in-crease Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confi-dence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY CROSS FOR AN END TO THE PLAGUE

O Cross of Christ, save me. May zeal for your house free me. + The Cross conquers; the Cross

reigns; the Cross rules; by the sign of the Cross + free me, O Lord from this plague.

• The Cross of Christ will expel the plague from this place and from my body. It is good to wait for the help

of God in silence, that He may drive away this plague from me.

• I will incline my heart to performing your just deeds, and I will not be confounded, for I have called upon

You. I had zeal on occasion of the wicked; seeing the peace of sinners, I have hoped in You.

• The Cross of Christ puts demons to flight; corrupt air; and drives away the plague. “I am your salvation”,

says the Lord; “cry out to Me, and I will hear you, and I will liberate you from this plague.”

• Abyss calls to abyss, and you have expelled demons by Your voice; liberate me from this plague. Blessed

the man who hopes in the Lord, and does not look upon vanities and false extravagances.

• May the Cross of Christ, which was once the cause of scandal and indignity, and is now in glory and no-

bility, be for my salvation, and expel from this place the demon, and corrupt air, and plague from my

body.

• May zeal for the honor of God convert me before I die, and in Your name, save me from this plague. +

May the sign of the Cross free the people of God, and those who in trust in Him, from the plague.

• Will this foolish people return to the Lord? Make good on your vows, offering a sacrifice of praise and

faith to Him, because He is able to liberate this place and me, from this plague; for whoever trusts in Him

will not be confounded.

• If I will not praise You, let my tongue stick to my throat and to my jaws; free those who hope in You; in

You I trust; liberate me and this place, O God, from this plague, for Your name has been invoked in pray-

er.

• At Your death, O Lord, darkness fell over the whole earth; My God, render the power of the devil tenuous

and dim, for it is for this that You have come, O Son of the living God: so that You might destroy the

works of the devil with Your power, drive out from this place and from me, Your servant, this plague; and

may the corrupt air depart from me into the outer darkness.

• Defend us, O Cross of Christ, and expel from this place the plague, and free Your servant from this

plague, You who are kind and merciful and of many mercies and true.

• Blessed is he who does not look upon the vanities and false extravagances; on the day of evil the Lord will

free him; Lord, I have trusted in You; free me from this plague. God has become my refuge, because I

have trusted in You, free me from this plague.

• Look upon me, O Lord my God, Adonai, from the holy seat of Your majesty, and have mercy on me, and

because of Your mercy, free me from this plague. You are my Salvation: heal me, and I will be healed;

save me, and I will be saved.

Christ our Lord. Amen.

Regina Caeli

(O Queen of Heaven)

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed

Sacrament. I love You above all

things, and I long for You in my

soul. Since I cannot now receive

You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. As

though You have already come, I

embrace You and unite myself entirely to You;

never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

~St. Alphonsus Liguori

50 DAYS OF EASTER FROM FR. TERRY

The 50 days of Easter are celebrated as one great feast day or as St. Athanasius said, as one "great Sunday." At the beginning of the 50 days is the Easter octave. Octave is Latin for eight. During the octave, we celebrate the feast on the day itself and then seven days later with prayers that make reference to it being the same Easter day. This is to signify the octave as treating Easter as one day. It has been said that the octave forms the "early hours" of the "great Sunday." The 50 days of Easter will conclude with Pentecost (meaning fifty). May we live in the peace, joy, and hope of the risen Jesus, which will cause our faith to be contagious!

“Christianity, unlike any other religion in the world, begins with catastrophe and defeat. Sunshine

religions and psychological inspirations collapse in calamity and wither in adversity. But the

Life of the Founder of Christianity, having begun with the Cross, ends with the empty tomb and victory.” ― Fulton J. Sheen, Life of Christ
