Danette Bontrager, Iowa State University; Karen Williams, University of Minnesota, Heidi Soneson, University of Minnesota How to Help Your International Community Deal With Issues of Racism and Microaggressions Salon C Pan International students, scholars, and their dependents may experience racism on regular basis in U.S. campuses and communities. Most of these negative experiences are not even brought to the attention of the university administrators as internationals (1) may experience racism for the first time in their life as being a ""minority and marginalized"" population, (2) may not be aware of what racism means in a U.S. context, (3) may be afraid to bring up issues to university administrators, and (3) may be afraid of retaliation. This session will look at theoretical concepts of ""microagression"", case studies, and avenues for university administrators to educate new internationals about issues of racism and venues to deal with cases. Mathilda Tuuli, Iowa State University; Shan "Susanna" Lu, Concordia College, Moorhead; Ali Soltanshahi, Iowa State University; Courtney Poles, University of Michigan School of Dentistry Where Have All the Dreamers Gone? Swaraj Nandan, KIC Univ Assist; Timothy Tesar, Iowa State University Beyond the school web site - create a comprehensive web presence to reach international students Salon H Pan A schools website is very important and serves many different audiences and purposes. An effective web presence will give your school access to millions of students who are online looking for the right school – and if you follow the right steps, it is not hard to do. We will discuss the following:

What a good school website can accomplish, and what it alone cannot accomplish

How international students are searching for and finding schools online

What is a comprehensive web presence?

How do you grow your school’s web presence, through social media, search engines and partner sites?

Kelly Sharp, Columbia College Exploring the impact of service-learning during short-term study-abroad programs Salon B EA This study seeks to explore how service-learning during short-term study-abroad program can impact students’ civic values. We will conduct surveys before and after the service-learning programs to assess whether students’ values have changed, and to explore how they changed; we also plan to conduct interviews with students to get more in-depth information about the changing process. As the Institution of International Education stated in their report US Students in China: Meeting the Goal of the 100,000 Strong Initiative (2013), although their goal is to greatly increase the number of Americans studying in China, there is very little known about how American students are doing there. Therefore, we are interested in the role of general trust, and knowledge of China as well as national stereotypes and these factors may impact on American students’ Intercultural sensitivity, perceived cultural distance and socio-cultural adaptation. Overall, we hope this research can examine cultural growth and awareness as students engage in service learning projects in China.

The University of South Dakota works closely with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities to understand a student’s disciplinary history, including type and severity of infraction, and, if the student is deemed eligible to go abroad, to pass that history along to program providers. This session will discuss USD’s policies and explore the policies at other institutions.
