Our tour providers have been most reliable and the destinations have been varied and interesting. A small committee has put together a program for 2014, which has been circulated to all Outings Officers for whom I have Email addresses. I also have a small number of printed copies available today. WE WOULD LIKE YOUR FEED BACK, PLEASE! This is the third year of combined regional outings which the participating clubs have found has resulted in virtually no outing cancellations (only one to my knowledge) and which has lightened the load for the Outings Officers. I also bring to your attention, some of the protocols necessary to make the organisation of the outings easier for the host Officer, please keep these in mind and keep the host Officer informed. We think the 2014 program is again interesting and varied. We know several of the outings have already been included in previous programs of some clubs and it is on their recommendation that these have been included; this is a chance for any members who missed out initially to ‘come on board’. Please put the program on your notice board each meeting and encourage your members to contact the host Officer if they would like to participate in any of the outings. Remember the purpose of this initiative is:

to help your club offer a range of outings to members (helping to attract would-be members too!).

to lighten the load of your club’s Outings Officer.

to stop cancellation of planned trips due to insufficient numbers. We look forward to your club’s participation in the program. --------------------0--------------------------------------------0-----------------------------------------------0-------------------------------

GLEN WAVERLEY LADIES – Pat Moore

GENERAL:

The two of the three new interest groups commenced this year, are proving most popular: Book Exchange Table – bring one take one and Weekend Lunch Group, with limited response to the Walking Club.

OUTINGS:

Our visit in July, to Point Cook homestead & RAAF museum was blessed with stunning weather; the view across the bay was beautiful, the historical tale about the homestead, most interesting as was the visit to the RAAF museum (the ladies thoroughly enjoyed that too!); between the two we had an excellent lunch at the Werribee Italian Club. Members from Waverley Gardens, Clayton and Syndal Men’s’ Probus and our Club all had a great day.

In August we enjoyed our annual lunch at Zest,.

September saw the unfortunate cancellation of the first regional trip to Gumbuya Park due to insufficient support. However the first regional trip to Warrnambool, Halls Gap & Ararat was a great success with a wonderful group of 14 from GW Ladies & Waverley Gardens – the small group was well catered for by the small tour group leader Bob Scarborough.

Theatre wise, we have supported Encore theatre – The Club; Peridot – Wisdom of Eve and Morning Melodies, where we sang with Marina Pryor in Hamer hall (which made up for the disappointment of missing David Hobson due to laryngitis!).

SPEAKERS:

July - Frank Harres from A.B.L.E. Australia

August – Joan Corfee spoke on the Mercy Ships – floating hospitals in service today around particularly the African coast, performing surgical procedures and medical treatment in third world countries – very good.

September – Ken Jasper, The Bee Man – a most entertaining talk on his passion for bee keeping, with an introduction to the productive and reproductive methods of bees!

DULDIG STUDIO AND LABASSA VISITS Friday 23 August saw a happy group of Probus members enjoy not one, but two outstanding visits. DULDIG STUDIO. 92 Burke Rd., East Malvern. A hidden jewel, Duldig studio not only displayed numerous sculptures in the house, the studio and the garden - it brought us a most remarkable story. The sculptor, Karl Duldig and his artist wife, Slawa managed to escape Vienna a few days before the arrival of the Nazis. Their complicated separate and shared journey to Australia and freedom over months and years was amazing. Even more extraordinary was the journey of their precious artwork and furniture - much of which is on display here in the house. A family of extraordinary talent - they and their daughter were artists, athletes and inventors. Continuing their lives here in Melbourne as Art Teachers in two private schools, their daughter, Eva became an Australian and international tennis champion. Eva has saved her parents' precious work and treasures in their original environment - a mighty feat. We were privileged to meet her, especially Margaret Keir with whom she had attended school! LABASSA. 2 Manor Grove. Caulfield One of the National Trust of Victoria's less known19th century mansions, Labassa's history is also complicated and interesting. The wonderful features inside the huge 35 room house provide a rich insight into the wealth and lifestyle of the early occupants, despite the sadly crowded suburban streetscape now surrounding it. Having been used as apartments and falling into disrepair the renovations undertaken by the Trust are quite stunning. Again, both the building and the story are well worth a visit. Both places welcome visitors. Ida Robinson
