Cold or Flu?
You have a cough and your body aches. So do you have a cold or the flu? The
physicians at MEDcare Urgent Care want to ensure you know how to take the best care
of you and your loved ones this cold and flu season. Learn the difference between a
cold and flu and be able to prevent them both.
The flu and common cold are both caused by a viral infection of the upper respiratory
tract. While over 200 different types of viruses can cause a common cold, the flu is
caused by either influenza A, B or C.
C O L D S Y M P T O M S
Cold symptoms include a sore throat, runny nose, congestion and cough. A slight fever
is possible but not common. A cold usually lasts about a week and is contagious the
first few days.
F L U S Y M P T O M S
Flu symptoms usually come on more quickly and also include a sore throat, runny
nose, congestion and cough, but are also accompanied by a high fever, body aches,
soreness and chills. Though symptoms may gradually improve within a week, it is not
uncommon to feel exhaustion and fatigue for more than a week.
Though the flu has similar symptoms to a common cold, it is more severe and can
lead to more serious complications, including pneumonia, bacterial infection,
hospitalization or even death.
Cold O R Flu?
Moms in the Know® 11
Cold or Flu?
T h E F A C T S
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 20% of Americans
get the flu each year. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized and estimates of
annual flu-associated deaths have ranged between 3,000 and 49,000 people.
“Children are at greater risk for frequent colds and flu than adults,” Dr. Pawlik, chief
medical officer at MEDcare Urgent Care, said. “Their immune systems have not yet
matured and they are usually in close physical contact with other children at school
or daycare .”
P R E V E N T I O N
Flu and cold viruses enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth. They spread
when people who have a virus cough, sneeze or even talk. A person can easily contract
a cold or flu by touching something that has the virus on it.
As easy as it is to contract a virus, there are ways to prevent cold and flu. It is
important to wash your hands. Frequent hand washing can destroy viruses you have
come in contact with. Door knobs, keyboards, switches, telephones and remote
controls can harbor viruses for hours after they have been in use by an infected
person.
“Along with washing your hands often and keeping surfaces clean, the best way to
stay protected is by getting a flu vaccination each year,” Dr. Pawlik said. Since the flu
viruses change often, the flu shot is updated every year and lasts up to one year.
MEDcare Urgent Care treats injury and illness, including cold and flu, every day from 9 a .m . to 9 p .m . Visit their website at www .medcareurgentcare .com .

I would have to say Anne Lamott’s Operating Instructions (http://www.amazon.com/Operating-Instructions-Journal-Sons-First/dp/1400079098). Lamott is one of my favorite
writers and I read this book soon after my first child was born. Her honest stories about the light and dark moments of parenting made me laugh and cry.
F A V O R I T E P A R K
I really love the Riverland Terrace Park and have been taking my boys there on and off for the last ten years. It’s great in the warmer months because it’s shaded and next to the water and there is a good mix of older and younger play equipment to keep my 3 sons (ages 10, 7 and 2) entertained. We also love to walk from the playground to the boat landing and throw rocks in the water. Water, rocks and a nice breeze keep my kids happy for a long time while I watch
the boats cruise by.
F A V O R I T E L O C A L F A M I L Y O U T I N G
The SC Aquarium. We’ve had memberships there ever since our first son was born and ten years later, we keep going back. The new toddler room is Reid favorite, Will (10 years old)
likes the big explorer tank with the scuba divers and Miles (7 years old) says “facts about the fish are interesting.”
F A V O R I T E F A M I L Y M E A L
Tacos. My 7 year old is a recent vegetarian and I was so excited when I discovered meatless crumbles that resemble ground turkey meat so that I can keep making tacos for the whole
family. Tacos are quick and easy and I put little bowls out with add-ons like lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, avocado and beans so if they are feeling adventurous, the boys can try something
new.

I’d have to say Christmas and going to the James Island County Park Festival of Lights. We go every year at least once, and the boys love it…it never gets old. We listen to Christmas music as we drive through the park and then we get out and ride the train and toast marshmallows over the fire and ride the carousel and it goes on and on. I grew up in Vermont and my own Christmases were snowy and cold and so going to the lights reminds me of how different my
children’s Christmas experiences are from my childhood.

First I’ll say the parenting advice that drives me crazy is: “Enjoy it while it lasts, it’ll be over before you know it!” I think that advice should be stricken from the books. No one wants to
hear it and everyone says it. Advice that I think of often came from my mom (a therapist) who said: You are going to make all kinds of mistakes as a parent…you will say the wrong thing
or lose your temper or be late to pick your child up at school, but what matters is the repair work. Talk to your kids, explain what happened and make sure you do your best to “repair”
the mistake.
3 T I P S F O R M O M S
1. After ten years of being a mom, I would say learn how to say no. I think a lot of moms over-commit and then end up feeling stressed out.
2. Put your work away when the kids are home. As someone who works from home, I am often pulled between what I want to be doing on the computer and what my kids need me to be doing for them. Sometimes what they need is far less interesting then my work (a snack, a shoe tied or help with a science project), but I can’t do both at the same time. I’ve really had to learn that when the kids are home from school, my work gets put on hold.
3. Put yourself first. I know that will seem like a crazy notion for many moms, but as a woman living with chronic illness, I’ve learned that I am no good to anyone if I don’t take care of myself first. I am a better mom to my boys when I am in good health and I think it’s important for them to see me placing value on myself so they will do the same.
M Y F A V O R I T E E S C A P E F R O M T h E D A I L Y G R I N D
Running. Easy answer. I would not be the same if I weren’t able to go for a run every morning. Those 30 minutes of quiet time make all the difference.
G U I L T Y P L E A S U R E J U S T F O R M E
Art walks. As a freelance writer I get to interview artists and gallery owners for several local publications, and there is nothing better then sneaking away at 5pm on a Friday to attend an art walk with some friends. Looking at great art, especially when I’ve interviewed the artist, takes me out of my mom zone and reminds me of all the beauty beyond my front door. We
have such a wealth of great art and talented artists in the Lowcountry and I feel so privileged that I get to see inside their worlds. The art walks give me a new way of seeing and that is
always a treat.
