Girl ScoutsNational ConventionWe hope that you are planning to join us at the National Convention! If you are unable, you can see what is happening online! Log on to www.girlscouts.org/convention to read all about it.
The time we will spend together in Houston this November will be historic, euphoric — and unconventional. The party will be bigger. The speakers and entertainment will be unforgettable. The business sessions will be streamlined to leave more time for thoughtful conversations about where we are now and where we are going in the future.
At this convention there are sessions for all volunteers including: ✪ Conversations of Consequence
✪ A History Conference
✪ Girl Scout University @ Convention
✪ The famous Hall of Exhibits
and so many celebrations to kick off our 100th Anniversary!
Girls will be attending the Girl Scout Leadership Institute as a part of the convention as well. We will report back when we return, so stay tuned to hear more!
If you would like additional information regarding the proposals that will be voted on at the convention, please contact Kim Hull at [email protected]. .

Check out all the activities on our 100th Anniversary website at www.GirlScouts100Years.com. You can start on the Adventure 100, the Then and Now activities or the Wacky 100’s! Be sure to visit the story bank under the Heritage tab to tell us how Girl Scouts has impacted your life and your community, and your plans for the future!Be sure that you check out the monthly service projects under the
Change the World tab. September and October both have written programs for troops to use for meeting time. September is Literacy month and the Loving Literacy program is loaded with great ideas for girls and troops. At the end of the program you can host a reading tent to collect books for an area shelter or day care center. October is Friendship month! There are excellent programs for girls
and troops on anti-bullying and building great friendships available under the Change the World tab. When you have completed the program, you can host a friendship party to share your new found knowledge on anti-bullying and help other girls to spot the signs and be prepared to stop bullies!Service units can begin thinking about planning a special event to
celebrate Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday in October. There are some great games and crafts on the website to help you in your planning. 100 years is a milestone, and we want to get the party started right away! If you have questions, email [email protected].

The celebration will include the Cookie 500 Club and the girl High Awards recognition event with a special portion of the day being planned just for our Girl Scout alumnae. Volunteers, girls, alumnae and community members are all invited. You won’t want to miss our evening activities; Annual Meeting, Adult Recognition, a performance of the GSEIWI 100th Anniversary song contest winner and several surprises that are being planned with you in mind. We are privileged to have to Pegine Echevarria as our guest speaker. Listening to theVoice of GirlsThe voice of girls is the driving force of Girl Scouts. GSEIWI is committed to addressing the complex and ever-changing needs of girls, often partnering with the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI). As part of this on-going effort, we often ask our girl members and volunteers to share their thoughts about Girl Scouting and other issues affecting today’s girls. These efforts not only support the development of the Girl Scout program, but also supply accurate information to educational, not-for-profit, and public policy organizations, parents seeking the best ways to help their daughters, and girls themselves.
Questionnaires for the first major project — “Girls Speak Up!”— will be available October-November 2011. Reports from past projects are available on our website, GirlScoutsToday.com. In addition, we often ask parents to visit our website after each event that their daughter attends to complete a short evaluation of her experience that day.
To be a part of these important projects, girls and volunteers should register at
www.GirlScoutVoices.org. (Girls under 13 will need parental permission to sign up.)

Get Ready, Get Set… for Nuts, Candies,
GSEIWI is pleased to announce we are partnering again with Ashdon Farms & QSP for our Fall Product Sale. Ashdon carries a line of nuts and candies that are sure to please any snack craving, while QSP offers a family-friendly and profitable magazine sale.
The Fall Product Sale is a great way for troops to earn money for activities and programs. Last year more than 1,000 troops participated in the sale, earning each troop an average of $236.13
Troops keep 25 percent of all sales. And, the Fall Product Sale gives girls a chance to build a network of customers to return to for the program we are best known for… Cookies! The Cookie Sales Program promises to be an amazing learning experience for our girls. An energetic group of volunteers are implementing the new and improved direct sale program that will not only make it easier for girls to sell, but also boosted sales for fellow councils and many of last year’s GSEIWI pilot troops.
With the direct sale, girls will have cookies in hand when they approach their customers. We will move our start date from January to February. Our recognitions will be awesome for the girls earning their way into the 500 Club.

Providing Guidance —Adult LearningHelping our volunteers be successful is a priority of the Adult Learning Department. Over the course of this past year, we have gone to a NEW format on the Adult Learning page of the website. To find the Adult Learning page, click on “Volunteers” along the top tab and then on the “Adult Learning” button.
We have made it easier for you to find a specific training topic. For instance, if you are a troop leader, just click the “Troop” link and you will see all of the courses required for a troop leader. If you are looking for outdoor training, by clicking that link you will see all of the outdoor learning sessions that we offer. Be sure to look around that page to see the new online enrichment courses that we have added. We have courses in Parent Participation, Troop Finances and understanding the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Another quick click will take you directly to the page where you can register to attend the classroom courses. The online courses are only a click away as well. We will be adding more online courses this fall and winter, so be sure to check back.
Volunteer Essentials 2011-12Volunteer Essentials has been updated and is better than ever for all general Girl Scout and council information needs. It is available for you online! And NEW this year: direct links from the Table of Contents to the topics you are looking for. Helping Volunteers be SuccessfulHave you been to our website (GSEIWI.org) lately? We are always striving to improve how you find information, add additional information to help you as a volunteer, and make it easy for you to have opportunities for continual education in a variety of ways.
Resource pagesAnother great resource for new and returning leaders are the many resources on our Leader Resource page. If you are needing some helpful hints, looking for songs, games, ceremonies, help with traditions, finances, discipline or grade level characteristics, check out the resource pages. KeepingOur Promise to GirlsSince 2005, the Girl Scout Movement has been focused on building the best leadership experience that defines activities and outcomes, is differentiated by age level, and offers flexible pathways for participation for all girls grades K-12.
A key element of this work is the development of the 15 outcomes and the three program processes that form the foundation of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). The 15 GSLE outcomes are the measurable benefits we expect the girls to derive from their participation in Girl Scouting.
For more information on the outcomes and program processes, visit www.GirlScouts.org/Research/Publications/GSOutcomes.
A focus on outcomes gives Girl Scouting solid evidence of how we are keeping our promise to girls, how to serve girls better, and how to better support volunteers. The evidence allows us to speak in one unified voice to current and potential members and to our funders and communities.
