Congratulations to the entire Mokapu Community for a successful WASC visit. We had 6 educators spend 4 days examining what we do and how we do it. They were very impressed with our school. Our goal is a 6-year Accreditation status! We should know the outcome by June. 1. All students in grades 3-6 will start taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) on April 19. This is a very important test that measures each child’s achievement in relation to the Common Core Standards. Wherever you PCS to next, these results will be used to place your child in the most appropriate class and course. 42 States use the Common Core Standards as the basis for curriculum. Please encourage your son or daughter to do their best and make sure they get plenty of rest and a good breakfast each testing day. Contact your teacher if you have specific questions. 2. I announced in last month’s letter that I will accept class style request letters for the 18-19 school year. I must receive these letters by May 15, 2018 for consideration. Do not request a specific name of teacher or the request will be denied. These letters are used to place children in an appropriate learning environment that meets his or her needs best. 3. Many of you may wonder why things are the way they are at Mokapu and in Hawaii. I encourage you to become active in our School Community Council (SCC) and Parent Teacher Association (PTA). There are volunteer opportunities for parents in each of these groups to positively impact and guide the direction of Mokapu. This is a healthy way to voice concerns and share ideas to benefit current and future students at Mokapu. Our next SCC meeting is at 2:15pm on 3/29 and next PTA meeting is at 8:00am on 4/19. Please come! Finally, with mixed feelings I must inform you that my last day at Mokapu will be Friday, May 4th. It has been an honor to serve the children of our Marine and Sailor families these past three years. As many of you know, my wife and are from Florida. Our original plans were to stay in Hawaii a little longer but our family needs us back home. Thank you for all of your support. I am so proud of the efforts of our faculty and students this year. The Dandelion “Official Flower if the

Military Child”

Dandelion you’re like me Set adrift to ride the breeze

Drifting here and settling there To grow as if you have no care

Only those like you will know The sudden rush to rise and go On any current you will flow

On any weathered wind you’ll blow In any sea, on any tide

On any ground, you will abide And you never do decide

Just where you’ll go, or how you’ll ride Around the world, among all kinds

Flying with no tie that binds Always leaving friends behind Trying not to show you mind

Dandelion I’m like you! Of my future, I’ve no clue!

I put down roots that have no glue So I’ll move to somewhere new.

- Patti Neal Cadwallader 2009

Why Purple?

Purple symbolizes all branches of the military – including their colors:

Coast Guard blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Air Force

blue. When a military member serves, their whole family serves,

too. That includes the littlest heroes – military kids.

~ Military & Family Life Counselor ~ ~ Kassandra Engfer ~

808.282.6221 Aloha family I have been working on this very important, yet simple activity with many of the classrooms I vis-it….Breathing….yes, breathing…. What is “Belly Breathing”? Belly breathing is a technique that teaches your child to slow down his or her breathing when feeling stressed or anxious.

Why is Belly breathing important? When your child is feeling anxious, his or her breathing will change. When we are anxious, we tend to take short, quick, shallow breaths.

• Belly breathing can help lower anxiety and offers a sense of

control.

• Belly breathing is a great portable tool that you or your

child can use when feeling anxious, unsure, or frustrated. Teaching the calm breathing technique

• Take a slow breath in through the nose (for about 4 sec-

onds)

• Hold your breath for 1 or 2 seconds

• Exhale slowly through the mouth (over about 4 seconds)

• Wait 2-3 seconds before taking another breath (5-7 sec-

onds for teenagers)

• Repeat for at least 5 to 10 breaths

Calm Breathing for Younger Children: Bubble Blowing A fun way to teach your younger child how to do belly breath-ing is the “bubble blowing” technique. Using a toy soap bub-ble container and wand have your child practice blowing bubbles. The breathing required for blowing soap bubbles is the same as what is used for belly breathing. All you have to do is make sure your child waits a second or two before blow-ing another bubble. Then practice “blowing bubbles” without a bubble wand. Briere, J.N. &Scott, C. (2015). Summer Musical Theater
