I. Information for international short-term students
1) Understanding the module system
All study programmes at the University of Cologne are structured into “modules”. A module is a teaching unit that is made up of one to fife thematically related courses/classes that must be taken together plus a final exam.
Here is, for example, a module with three co-requisite courses:
Students are required to take all three courses of the module (the lecture, the seminar, and the practical course) and the module exam at the end of the semester (term paper in the seminar). Upon successful completion, students are awarded 12 ECTS credits.
Advanced module AM 2: Medienkultur und Gesellschaft [4227MBXAM2] 12 CP
Lecture: Medien und Kultur
Seminar: Mediennutzung und kulturelle Kommunikation
Practical course: Medien-Kritik
Module exam (written): term paper (15 pages) in the seminar
2) Workload reduced study options
In some modules workload reduced study options are available for short-term students. Whenever such an option exists, it is clearly defined in the module table.
In the module provided below, for example, short-term students have two options: they can either complete the entire module (lecture + seminar + practical course) and receive 12 ECTS (regular track) or only attend the seminar in which the module exam is held and receive 7 ECTS (workload reduced option).
Advanced module AM 2: Medienkultur und Gesellschaft [4227MBXAM2] 12 CP 7 CP
Lecture: Medien und Kultur -
Seminar: Mediennutzung und kulturelle Kommunikation
Practical course: Medien-Kritik -
Module exam (written): term paper (15 pages) in the seminar
3) Finding modules and course listings in KLIPS 2.0
All modules and current course listings for short-term students can be found here: Link to Short-term Study Programme in KLIPS 2.0 (please choose desired academic year).
This is what a module looks like in KLIPS 2.0: Orange flag = name of module Green flags = compulsory elements of the module (courses + exam)
Clicking on the "+" next to a green flag will open the different course options students have in that module segment in the chosen academic year.
IMPORTANT: When putting their timetable together, students have to make sure that they choose one course from every module segment!
1) In our example, students would have to choose one of the offered lectures in the first module segment:
2) …plus one of the offered seminars in the second module segment:
3) …plus one of the offered practical courses in the third module segment:
3
5) How to write down modules in the Learning Agreement
The following table shows how Erasmus students should write down their selected modules and courses in their Learning Agreement:
Write down the code and the title of the module, e.g. “[4227MBXAM2] Advanced module AM 2: Medienkultur und Gesellschaft”.
List below the courses chosen in each module segment, including course code and title of the course:
Component code of the module
Component title at the Receiving Institution (as indicated in the course catalogue)

Number of ECTS credits to be awarded by the Receiving
